While I haven’t had a chance to crack open my nice pretty Blu-Ray copy of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, GeneralsJoes contributor Mysterious Stranger was kind enough to spend some serious time last night going through the standard DVD 2-Disc release for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and provide his thoughts and insight.
Keep in mind, unlike me, he is not necessarily a devout follower of the Rise of Cobra mythos, and had his own expectations before going into it, but by and large, he had a very favorable response to the movie in general, and the DVD release as well. Click the “Read the Rest of this Entry” link below for the nitty gritty!

by generalsjoes | Nov 3, 2009 | G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe: Resolute
It appeared on the surface that both G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Resolute were a little sparse on the special features, and unfortunately, now that I’ve seen both first hand, that appears to be the truth. While the DVD cover of G.I. Joe: Resolute advertises “Exclusive Missing Footage”, I can find nothing in the Special Features that cooberates that. Granted, I haven’t watched the actual DVD yet. All I can think that they’re referring to is the SDCC and JoeCon promo footage. The five minute footage of Snake Eyes slicing and dicing the COBRA Troopers that everyone has seen at this point, either first hand, or from Titmouse’s website (and shortly thereafter, on YouTube courtesy of your’s truly). So, really, this “Missing Footage” isn’t really missing.
But again, I haven’t watched the movie itself, I just know that generally that stuff isn’t woven seamlessly into the film, it’s normally on the Special Extras menu. I’ll be checking it out soon enough and will give a full report.
Until then, though, I did get some images taken of the Resolute menu interface as well as some of the “Joe Files” that the DVD offers. They are much more in depth than the images I’m posting below, consider them a “teaser” of sorts. 😉

by generalsjoes | Nov 3, 2009 | G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe Comics, G.I. Joe: Resolute
Many Joefans likely flocked to Amazon.com to pre-order G.I. Joe: Resolute so they could check out the exclusive unreleased Resolute comic that was available for download with the purchase. GeneralsJoes was among that crowd, and I’m posting a little sneak peek at some of the panels in the comic. I was really pleasently surprised at the book, to be honest…it was written very crisply, with a lot more adult-oriented action than some of the previous releases. The coolest thing is, it gives some insight into the Iron Klaw Troopers and Crimson Troopers. By looking at the panels in the book, it would appear that the Iron Klaw Troopers are meant to be the “cream of the crop” of Cobra troops, even above the esteemed elite Crimson Guard. Heavily utilizing the Iron Klaw look from G.I. Joe: Extreme, they actually mesh into the Cobra hierarchy very well.
As for the Crimson Troopers…at first they appear to simply be offshoots of the Crimson Guard, but at one point, the Iron Klaw Trooper hands one of them a tactical vest, updated helmet, and parachute which almost look to have a strong Resolute Trooper influence. Actually, in one of the panels, the Crimson Trooper looks like it was probably a Resolute Trooper from the neck down with a cool newly sculpted helmet for the head.
Frankly…this is a big bummer, considering this never got released. This could have been a great Resolute Crimson Guard, and I am a humongous fan of the Resolute Trooper tooling. The comic issue shows the Crimson Troopers going through a rigorous training exercise designed to weed out the ineffective and incapable. At the end, one Crimson Trooper remains and we get a glimpse of just how intense Cobra’s training program is. A pretty cool shift, and unlike many of the other Resolute comics, this one actually seems like it could mesh into the Resolute universe fairly well. Check out the mirrored images below.

by generalsjoes | Nov 3, 2009 | G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe: Resolute, G.I. Joe: The Movie
What a great feeling…just got back from Wal-Mart where I scooped up my brand spankin’ new copies of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra on Blu-Ray as well as G.I. Joe: Resolute on DVD. RoC is on sale right now for $19.96 while Resolute retailed for a super-reasonable $13.00! Of course, it just figures that I have to come in to the office late night tonight to work on a server project…dammit.
Still, at some point this week, I’m going to be in G.I. Joe movie heaven, and being able to watch both these films at any time is a great feeling.
Just make sure to keep watching GeneralsJoes over the next few days, I plan to have some reviews, coverage, screenshots, and lots of cool bells and whistles on these recently released DVD’s. Whether or not you liked The Rise of Cobra, I don’t think anyone will debate that 2009 was one of the biggest years for G.I. Joe since the 80’s. It’s been an awesome ride.

Not content with merely providing a crappy cell phone pic, Scott “madmac41” from JoeBattleLines has put his camera to use, grabbing a nice allotment of boxed images of the fresh from the retail womb Wal-Mart Battle Station sets! Retailing for a very appealing $14.96 (in the same ballpark as the Wal-Mart 2-Pack figures, only with a whole bunch of added Battle Station goodness… WTF?) these are some very cool sets that initially left me somewhat cold, but are now leaving me a lot less cold. Still a bit cool, though. I’m not wild about ’em…
Frustrating thing is, there are some very cool things about each set, but none of the sets really blow me away. I love the Heatseek Missile, but I really don’t care for that Scrap Iron, and I’ve got like 47 Neo-Vipers already. The COBRA Surveillance port is awesome, but I really don’t need another cruddy MARS Trooper, and that Tele-Viper don’t look right.
On the Joe side, I dig the Resolute Roadblock (he looks a lot better in these pictures, for sure), but Tripwire is just bizarre, and I’m not sold on the Outpost Defender itself. The Laser Artillary Weapon is a bit underwhelming, but that Hawk kicks all sorts of ass. I dunno…maybe I’ll think different if I see them at retail. There are some pretty awesome aspects to them, but not enough warranting sixty of my dollars, at least not at this point. I know other fans are riled up about ’em, though, so enjoy the mirrored pics.

by generalsjoes | Nov 2, 2009 | G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe Toys, Pursuit of COBRA
What a difference some color makes… the initial Rise of Cobra version of Cobra Commander got universal disdain (though personally I thought it was a pretty cool, revolutionary new design) got this new, mail order version is getting pretty wide praise. And honestly, it freaking deserves it. Regardless of how much it does or doesn’t resemble Cobra Commander, that is one bad ass looking figure. The vac metallized mask, the chrome red torso…the staff, weapons, and nasty looking miniature HISS sentry? Hot damn that’s a cool looking figure.
It takes a lot to make me like Cobra Commander…there’s been so much ridiculous redundancy with this character over the past several years, seeing something new and cool is a very good thing in my book. Check out the mirrored images below. Holy crap it’s awesome. How cool will it look alongside the Crimson Neo-Vipers? The packaging is sick, too…

The guys over at The Terror Drome have dug up a very nice image of the upcoming Toys “R” Us Exclusive Pursuit of Cobra Doc and Shipwreck (Arctic Threat) figures. It’s assumed these two figures will be part of the third wave of Toys “R” Us exclusive “Headquarters for Heroes” assortments. Check out the images mirrored below.

Love that Doc. Really colorful, but also has the familiarly colored pants that kind of bring it back to the vintage look at least a little bit. I dig it.
by generalsjoes | Nov 2, 2009 | Customs, G.I. Joe, Sideshow
So the deadline for the Sideshow Collectibles Spooktacular custom contest has come and gone, and we have a bunch of great entries to begin judging! An esteemed group of judges from JoeCustoms.com (and myself, of course) will begin the judging process immediately, but until we pick a winner, check out the entries at the JoeCustoms Spooktacular page, and also mirrored below.
Thanks a TON for all of the fantastic Halloween themed entries. It’s going to be tough judging these.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen kicked off the whole Augmented Reality gimmick on it’s Blu Ray disc, overing kids, fans, and adults with an affinity for large robots the chance to interact directly with the Transformers characters. All you need is a PC with a webcam, a brand new copy of the Blu-Ray disc, and some time to waste.
Well, as first reported by Paramount, and now covered more in depth by IGN.com, G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA (which hits Blu Ray and DVD Tuesday, November 3rd) also features the Augmented Reality gimmick, this time offering up a chance for you to play a cool interactive fighting came featuring Snake Eyes and some of COBRA’s most sinister members. Check out the article on IGN.com for more information, and be sure to pick up your copy on DVD or Blu-Ray this Tuesday!
