Why isn’t anyone talking about the SDCC Sketchbook??

Perhaps I missed the conversation somewhere, but I just received this year’s San Diego ComicCon Design Sketchbook in the mail, and holy crap!  There is some awesome stuff in here. There’s a fair share of Anniversary design sketches, but what’s really got me is the cool stuff that was either unused concepts or potential future stuff. I scanned a couple of pages below with what appear to be some very cool designs for Flint, Zarana, Storm Shadow, and a couple of other items that are unknown.

I especially LOVE that Storm Shadow.  A spiffy new design that builds very nicely from the original look, yet looks current, too.  Absolutely awesome!  Check out just a small sample of the images below…there’s lots more in the book, too, from many of Hasbro’s different brands.

Hopefully Hasbro will have this thing up for sale somewhere down the line.  I haven’t seen it on HTS yet, but hopefully it’ll be out there.  I love this stuff.

More details on G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA opening weekend

Thanks to Mysterious Stranger for pointing out Hollywood insider Nikki Finke, who has a VERY detailed report about G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA’s opening weekend on her website here.

She seems quite optimistic about the returns for the film financially (though she trends at about $55 million rather than the $60 million that Steve Mason reported on his blog just recently.  I think Nikki’s got the inside track.  Interesting quotes are as follows:

“Now, despite all the sniping and snarking, it looks to open for a $55M North American weekend after earning $22M today from a huge release into 4,007 theaters. The pic even made a ” B+” CinemaScore (“A-” for under 18).”

That sounds pretty good…she also talks about the international numbers.

G.I. Joe also opened day and date in 75% of its foreign territories. Although I’ve heard reports from rival studios that ticket sales were “disappointing” in Australia (where the pic opened #2 to the Sony romantic comedy Ugly Truth), early numbers from Asia are said to be “huge”. One projection for overseas grosses this weekend is $35M…”

She also brings up some great points about royalties from toy sales and DVD sales.  So far, things are sounding at least somewhat promising, but I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes on this throughout the weekend and going forward.  Again, check out her entire article right here.

Early Box Office estimates put Rise of COBRA at a possible $60 million opening weekend

Though Box Office Mojo hasn’t yet updated it’s numbers, Steve Mason’s Blog reports that The Rise of COBRA exceeded industry expectations and hit $22.5 million it’s first day of release, and is on track to hit $60 million for opening weekend.

These are very strong numbers, but time will tell where we go from here.  Lorenzo Di Bonaventura said that he wants $350 million internationally before moving forward on a sequel, so we’ll have to pay attention as these numbers keep going.  I’ll keep everyone posted!

Thanks to Razorback from HissTank for the info.

Whew…what a week

Yeesh…not only did the Rise of COBRA movie hit, but I’ve been spending some serious time with the video game to get a review prepped, plus work has been nuts and my wife is about ready to burst with our second child, so we’ve been doing nursery prep and all that fun stuff.

So if you’ve noticed that news stories and reviews have slowed, please don’t worry about it!  Starting Monday, as long as I’m not in the hospital with the family, things will start picking back up again and going full steam.  I’ve got reviews in the hopper for the X-Box 360 game, Mark Bellomo’s excellent book that I’ve taken way too long to get a review done on, as well as many Rise of Cobra figures that I don’t have up yet.

So, while I know the Twitter feed and RSS Feed haven’t been cooking along quite as often as usual, rest assured, there’s plenty more to come, I haven’t lost my juice, just catching my breath a bit this week.  It’s been a whirlwind for Joe fans, but a great ride already!  Go see the movie like eight times so we can get some decent sequels out of it.

Great G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA contest at OCRegister.com

The Orange County Register has posted in it’s “Mom Blog” that they are holding a contest with giveaways including over $200.00 in G.I. Joe merchandise as well as free copies of the recently released G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA video game for X-Box 360!  One catch… the contest appears to be primarily geared towards moms who are fans, or moms with kids who are fans.  Are there any mothers out there?  Hit up the Mom’s Blog and leave a comment, you might get some great Joe shwag!

G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA – What did you think?

So it’s times like this that I really wish I had some sort of forums attached to the site, but instead, I’ll just piggy back on my “Sister Site”, JoeBattleLines.  The guys and  girls over on JBL have been having some great discussions about the Rise of COBRA leading up to the release of the film, and I fully expect some nice, respectful, educated debate now that the film has hit and everyone has their own .02 they want to share.  Check out the following links to discuss this with fellow fans!

Over the next few days I’ll be spending some serious time over there talking about the movie and enjoying the conversation!

Comprehensive Con Rundown Part 2

Correction to Part 1: I somehow neglected to remember the movie night is now FRIDAY so keep this in mind as you read and plan.

Part 2 focuses on the rest of the con.

FRIDAY – THE CON STARTS
You might not want to party too hard Thursday night/Friday AM as the next day starts early with the annual parachute drop.  I must admit, this year’s 12″ CG Paratrooper looks like a win, which is remarkable considering the horrid streak the club has been on with us 3.75″ collectors.  Rest assured Joe fans, if there is ONE thing the club can do without fail is 12″ stuff.  In the past you must sign up and sign a waiver to be a volunteer to throw the parachute figures.  They have taken us to the top level of an hotel’s atrium/lobby and they have taken us to the top of buildings before.  There is no telling where they have picked for us to throw from.  It is a fun experience nevertheless.  Looking at the GIJCC pics from their ’01 con there, they went to the roof of the hotel and were TETHERED by harnesses anchored by a steel chain.  Good Lord, someone had liability concerns!!
