JoeCon 2010 Recap – Friday (Hasbro Tour)

One of the biggest incentives to going to the Convention this year was the fact that the first 500 convention goers got a free tour of the Hasbro offices!  Having this tour with Botcon a few years ago, I kind of knew what to expect, but I still came away with some awesome information and experiences from the Joe side.  The tour was broken up into several groups of 20 people, and we were each marched around various tour locations and given a great presentation at each stop.
I will do my best to remember what the various sections were, but please bear with me if my memory is fuzzy.  It was damn early in the morning after an equally damn late night the night before!  I will post pictures where pictures were allowed, but keep in mind, some places did not want photography.  Click on the Read the rest of this entry link below to check it all out!  Beware, this post is image intensive.

Take back the Pit! Win a Rise of Cobra Pit Playset from GeneralsJoes

In celebration of the long awaited arrival of Dr. Venom to plastic form, GeneralsJoes.com is proud to offer the readers a chance to Take Back the Pit!  Next week, from April 12th – 16th, clues will be posted, leading GeneralsJoes readers through the site.
Finally, after almost three decades, the immortal Cobra villain Dr. Venom is being produced in an action figure only available from the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club!  But Joe fans didn’t know what they had coming…  Dr. Venom has arrived, but now he’s captured the G.I. Joe Pit Mobile Headquarters!
Only the most clever and wily GeneralsJoes readers will be able to help recapture the G.I. Joe headquarters, and the winner of the contest will get The Pit playset in their mailbox for free.  Contest rules are as follows:

  • Once per day, Monday through Friday, a chapter in a short (and hokey) Dr. Venom story will be posted.  Along with that short story snippet, a clue will be revealed.
  • Based on that clue, find the page hidden on GeneralsJoes.com with a piece of the final puzzle.  The clues may lead to a review of a particular action figure or a news story.
  • On Friday, once all of the clues have been revealed, the first person to send me all 5 hidden images via email to justin@generalsjoesreborn.com (either in pieces, or pieced together) will WIN.

This contest is open to anyone and everyone, though please keep in mind if someone in another country wins the prize, we may have to share shipping costs, depending on price.  The Pit is the first newly tooled G.I. Joe playset to be produced in several years…don’t miss your chance to win one for free!
A huge thanks to Hasbro and Hunter PR for sponsoring this contest.  Good luck!

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra nominated for MTV Movie Awards

Yeah, I know, not exactly the Oscars, but the MTV Movie Awards has listed their nominations, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has 6 of them.  The nominations are below:

Hmmm…well, we all know the MTV Movie Awards are cheese-worthy and are more for the spectacle than the actual awards…and any award that considers Channing Tatum for anything based on his role in The Rise of Cobra doesn’t get much confidence from me.
But hey, slow news day, so there ya go.  Hit up MTV.com for the full run down.

Speaking of slow boats from China…

Now, normally I try to avoid promoting the Chinese gray-market sellers too much on the site (even though I regularly partake in their wares, since I’m all about being a hypocrite).  But in the case of the Wave 3 Alpha product, since it’s cancelled state side, I can make an exception, I suppose.
The Terror Drome reports that Black Sheep Toy Store (also known as ws_toys) has Volcano Vipers up for grabs!  Woop!  Beyond the Polar Shark Sub, this was one figure that I was really looking forward to, and I’m psyched that he will at least be available in some regard.  Now all we need is the sub itself and Ice Storm.  Leatherneck wouldn’t be bad, but I still think Hasbro might have a better version up their sleeves somewhere down the line.  He would fit the Pursuit of Cobra perfectly.

If a tree falls and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Or…  if an assortment gets cancelled, and no one was going to buy it, does it really matter?
Okay, that’s a bit harsh.  To be honest, I was looking forward to the Volcano Viper, and the Polar Shark Sub was pretty bad ass all around, but I do think most fans have moved on past the third wave of Alpha vehicles, haven’t they?  I hope so, because according to The Terror Drome, the assortment has been officially cancelled, per an email from BigBadToyStore.
Seems to me, that even the most ardent fans of The Rise of Cobra (myself included) are now perched and ready for the Pursuit of Cobra, and don’t have a burning desire to revisit the Paramount universe at this point.  There are so many cool G.I. Joe items on the horizon that appear to have been birthed from the film, but have evolved past the film, that I’m not sure I can bring myself to care a whole lot about this last assortment.  Dusty did look pretty sweet.  The Polar Shark and Ice Storm are something that my collection will miss.  But the half-hearted Leatherneck was no great shakes, the repaint Rockslide and Molepod definitely don’t hurt my feelings.  I dunno.  Just nothing I was really clamoring for.
Bring on the Red Shadows at this point.
My biggest bitch is that I used a question in the last Q & A asking about this third wave…hopefully that’s not the magic one that Hasbro picks!

Will the real Operation: HISS Webisode 2 please stand up?

Yeah, looks like someone at MonkeyBarTV got a little tipsy the night before work last Friday…  what was being advertised as Episode 2 of Operation: HISS was likely Episode 3, and has now been pulled.  However, the real Episode 2 is now online, featuring some arctic action.  We see Timber, a little cameo from Snow Job, and hear some thick Scottish juice straight from Destro.
Check out the episode here, and some gratuitous screenshots below.

If it wasn’t already obvious enough, looking at this one, it’s pretty clear that Hasbro is taking full advantage of the 3d models from the video game.  I mean, these designs look nearly identical…
