What’s on Joe Mind deals with a FANDOM IN CRISIS with Episode 57

Has a fandom ever been thrown into such turmoil in such a short period of time before?  Two weeks ago, new G.I. Joe toys were on the verge if being released, a movie was coming out in about a month, JoeCon was coming and things were GREAT.

Now, two weeks later, the film is pushed back to 2013, most of the toys have been delayed, and JoeCon’s quick sell out has created a riff in the fandom.  What’s on Joe Mind to the rescue!  We spend some time with voicemail messages in this episode, letting Joe fans vent their frustrations, as we take some time to vent our own.

G.I. Joe Concept artists from Massive Black display their work

Originally found by an eagle eyed member of JoeDios.com, a website for concept art company Massive Black has been unveiled, and along with it, a bunch of great looking concept pieces for potential use in the G.I. Joe line.

Actually if you look, a lot of these ideas were borrowed for G.I. Joe throughout the Pursuit of Cobra, G.I. Joe: Renegades, and even the Ghost Hawk II has some strong elements from the VTOL in this artwork.  Some of this stuff looks fantastic.

For obvious safety and cost reasons, Hasbro cannot make toys with this many hard edges and details, but for sure the inspiration was there for the HISS, the Black Dragon, and the Ghost Hawk II.  The stuff that wasn’t used like the APC and the Tank wasn’t used for pretty obvious reasons, in my mind, as they are very evocative of similar vehicles from Aliens and HALO.  While G.I. Joe has clearly pulled some inspiration from those properties in the past, those two examples strike me as being extremely blatant.

To me the biggest loss is the incredible concept for The Baroness, a much more combat ready soldier looking version of that character.  Amazing looking figure there.  Pretty neat to see some of the steps taken towards our retail offerings.  Check out the gallery below, and hit up the site itself, too.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation toys from Wave 2 on rumored to be delayed until 2013

So, Joe fans got the words they were fearing via online retailers yesterday as reports emerged from all over the ‘net that G.I. Joe: Retaliation orders from Wave 2 and forward would not be fulfilled this year.  According to reports from online retailers, the same product will be made available in early 2013.

CRAP.

Now before everyone rushes in and says “Oh, cool, now they can push out some more 30th Anniversary stuff!  Oh, cool, now they can fix all the crappy articulation!”

Ummmm… no.  I would not expect anything like that.  Any toys, even ones where tooling already exists, takes far too long to produce to just be “thrown out there” within the next few months.  There is way more planning, coordination, and production required than we probably think.  They can’t just toss one of those Kwinn test shots in a magic machine and suddenly have 20,000 available to ship to retailers.

Same goes for articulation.  “Fixing” articulation would require significant retooling, and would essentially be creating the line again from scratch.  Hasbro has already invested too much money in the current figures, and already has way too short a time frame in order to make any wholesale changes to the figures as they stand.

On the good side, JoeCon is just four short weeks away, so hopefully we can all get our questions answered there.  And there will be a LOT of questions, I’m sure.

What’s on Joe Mind Episode 56 is online now

Did you ever want to go back in time?  Back to the simpler times…  back to the times before we found out G.I. Joe: Retaliation was delayed for nine months?

Now you can!  Hot on the heels of the biggest G.I. Joe story in years, we give you Episode 56 of What’s on Joe Mind where we discuss none of it!  In our defense, we have valid reasons for that, considering we recorded it before the news hit.  Regardless, there were still plenty of great things to discuss this episode, as we bring on Gary “Gyre-Viper” Head from the JoeDeclassified SpecOps Podcast to talk a little bit about the JoeDeClassified project and what convention attendees might expect to see at the booth.

Arune Singh from Marvel Comics joins us as well as we continue our pushed towards JoeCon and G.I. Joe: Retaliation… err… crap.  As always, hit up our Podbean Page, or just check out the embedded player below.  Show Notes as usual are after the jump.

Are we jumping the gun just a bit on the G.I. Joe toy recall hype?

I posted a few things on Twitter about this, but I wanted to talk about it a bit on the site here, too, just because I know not everyone follows me on Twitter.  Over the past few days I have been reading lots of anger and lots of hype about G.I. Joe: Retaliation toys and the likelihood of a widespread product recall from Hasbro.

To this I just have to say not so fast, my friends.

Let’s just think about this a bit and consider how realistic this scenario really is.

  1. Product recalls are an extremely expensive proposition and are generally only done in the case of danger or potential safety hazard
  2. Product recalls are, by and large, reported to the federal government, and end up on Recalls.gov (specifically the CPSC portion of the site), and there is no indication that this has been done as of yet.
  3. According to many brick & mortar and online retailers, Hasbro sent them communications allowing them to break Street Date last week, prior to the reported date, most likely as a reaction to the movie delay.  Why would they then send communications just a few days later telling retailers that they are recalling their product?
  4. In the same vein, Hasbro issued a press release specifically stating that G.I. Joe is a consumer brand and that items would be available for sale.  Why would they then issue widespread product recalls two days later?
  5. Keep in mind within this two day window, there were also a couple of days of a three day holiday weekend.
  6. According to several online retailers, including Kokomo Toys, and Adam from Entertainment Earth, Hasbro has issued them no recall orders whatsoever.  A Twitter friend of mine named Kenny reports the same lack of a recall notice for Target, and another guy on Twitter, Caped_Crusader has been hitting Targets all morning and finding product on pegs or in stock rooms in every one.
  7. Many fans report contacting retailers and being told that product was being recalled or was not available for sale.  Do not forget, most of these phone calls occurred prior to the previously established street date.  If some stores did not receive that communication about street dates, isn’t it possible they were simply referring to the street date as a reason why product could not be sold?

The one outlier in all of this is the reports from Rescuer about Dollar General potentially recalling figures.  First of all, I’m sorry, but I simply cannot be convinced based off on one forum message from one person that this is an actual occurrence.  Normally I try to maintain benefit of the doubt, but until I hear this from more sources or see more evidence of this, I’m going to chalk this up to miscommunication, especially considering the fact that these are not even movie product.

Granted, I’m not saying this is impossible, I’m just saying the problem is likely being overblown.  Perhaps Hasbro is offering an olive branch to certain retaliers?  I don’t know, but I’m sorry I’m not taking this all that seriously based on a few scattered forum posts and a random Variety article.  Time will tell, but before freaking out, I think we need to at least wait for the street date to come and go and see where things go over the next couple of weeks.

Variety goes into unusual detail about G.I. Joe: Retaliation toy troubles

I must say I was pretty surprised when I saw this article emerge on Variety.com.  Variety typically covers the film industry, but upon news of the delay of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the site decided to explore a little bit about the retail side of things.

And the retail side of things sounds like a mess for Hasbro as we suspected.  According to Variety, retailers are being asked to ship G.I. Joe: Retaliation product back…although whether this is merely a request or a directive is not yet clear.  Variety also reached out to retail management, and was told point blank that they likely would not order the G.I. Joe product line in as large a number next March, simply because summer films do better business.

It’s an interesting article, and it’s rare that a mainstream Hollywood site goes into this type of detail when it comes to the toys.  Heck, they even mention how torqued off the hardcore fans are, and they mention JoeCon.

Definitely worth a read.  Check it out right here.
