G.I. Joe by Sunbow – What stuck with you?

Anyone who’s been following my posts and comments over the years knows that I’m a huge comic fan when it comes to G.I. Joe…  much moreso than the Sunbow cartoon.  I loved the more adult and realistic storylines told in the comic pages.  Larry Hama had a way that he wrote these characters that gave them all personality and made them all so unique, yet not silly or dumb.  The Sunbow cartoon did this stuff as well, but it seemed to go to such extremes sometimes (as with Bazooka or Spirit) that it almost made mockeries of the characters instead of making them real.

Here goes the neighborhood…

“It was the third of September

That day I’ll always remember…”

– The Temptations, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”

Of course, that’s where the similarities between this post and the classic Temptation song ends, but I had to work it in here somewhere.  I like doing that with song lyrics that mention a specific day.  (Really!  Wait until June 6, better known as “Convoy Day.”) (more…)

It all starts today – the new TV Season

As far as I’m concerned, the new TV season officially starts today.  The final season of FX’s excellent series “The Shield” beings airing tonight, and while I don’t see how TV could get much better than that throughout the rest of the year, I am shocked to find that there are actually a number of shows I plan on checking out this year.  Normally my TV slate is pretty few and far between.  I can’t stand sitcoms and don’t do much in the way of prime time dramas…and reality TV?  It’s, quite simply, the work of the devil. A diorama legend…

…and if he’s not, he should be.

Anyone who has read my dio-stories is familiar with the work of “Capolan”.  He frequents JoeCustoms (and not much else Joe-wise) and is an absolute diorama wizard.  I’ve seen many Joe fans in my life who dabbled in art, and some who dabbled VERY well.  Cap is an artist who dabbles in G.I. Joe (and other 1:18 scale items).  He does things in that scale that you don’t see very often.

Anyone who likes my street set, the cabin in the everglades, and the COBRA temple, is already a fan of the great Capolan’s work.   Folks should also check out Spin Doctor’s excellent dio-stories at Checkpoint Alpha to see some more Capolan wizardry.

Anyway, what this is all leading up to is that Cap has launched a new website.  I encourage everyone to check it out and see what he can do with a little foamcore and hot glue.  It’s impressive.
