Yes, we’re two weeks into 2012 and the “Best Of” 2011 lists are still going strong! The latest one is courtesy of the Fwooshcast, a personal favorite podcast of mine, mostly because of one of the hosts Craig, who I have known for years, and who guest hosted on What’s on Joe Mind for a number of weeks.
So obviously, when he asked us to submit something for their 2011 “Year in Review” episode, we didn’t hesitate to comply.

While we all agree that G.I. Joe: Retaliation is, at best, a “soft reboot” of the G.I. Joe motion picture franchise, it turns out that at least one star of the previous film seems to think that a full reboot might have been preferable. Over at HitFix, Drew McWeeny talks to Channing Tatum about the G.I. Joe: Retaliation and what his hopes are for the second film. It’s a short clip, but Tatum seems for the idea of a “full reboot”. Check out the video below.
Interesting. It’s a short video, but I think it speaks volumes. Channing Tatum wishes for a “cleaner” second film, and does not once deny what Drew McWeeny calls a “hand off” to a new cast of characters. I might be looking too much into it, but that sure sounds to me like he is moving on from the G.I. Joe franchise, and might confirm some of our questions the trailer brought up.

I’m not necessarily convinced we’ll see a full blown video game in time for G.I. Joe: Retaliation theatrical release, but according to HissTank.com, trademarks are in place for such an event. The United States Patent and Trademark Office has revealed trademark 85512818, with information in regards to G.I. Joe: Retaliation trademarks:
“Interactive entertainment software, namely computer game software, computer game programs, computer game cartridges, computer game discs; interactive multimedia computer game programs; downloadable software for use in connection with computer games, communication devices and mobile telephones; computer game software for use with communication devices and mobile telephones, video game programs, video game software, video game cartridges; pre-recorded laser and video discs featuring animated cartoon series.”
Now, this could mean any matter of things…it could be mobile games for the Apple IOS and Android, or perhaps even Facebook games or viral marketing techniques. I would think that if a full blown video game was being released, we might have known about it by now, but I could be wrong.
Full details for the Rise of Cobra game came out in February, 2009 but that film was released a bit later in the year. Still, with Toy Fair on the horizon, chances of this info getting out soon are very good.
Hopefully we’ll hear more details in a few short weeks at Toy Fair. Meanwhile, let speculation run wild!
Big thanks to the folks over at the MS GIJoe Collectors’ Club for directing me to this site, which belongs to Paul Christopher, a concept artist who did some work for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Some very interesting stuff in there, including artwork from Cobra/MARS Industries’ Arctic fortress, among some others. Very cool blue uniformed troopers as well, which were never seen.

As always, full credit must be given to notpicard who has been able to dig up some fantastic stuff over the past week or so. Late last week he directed me towards a couple of different sites he uncovered online, and while the style of the art from the two sites is quite different, they have one thing in common. Some bad ass G.I. Joe conceptual drawings and paintings!
First, I’d like to point out Indigo Studios, who were apparently the folks behind the Pursuit of Cobra paintings that served as backdrops for the slideshow at the G.I. Joe Convention in 2009. They may have been used elsewhere, but I’m not sure where. All I know is I am absolutely in love with these paintings, and I am fired up that there is now a place to see them in all of their medium res glory. They really capture the whole Pursuit of Cobra aesthetic pretty perfectly, I must say. I do find it a bit odd that the human characters don’t bare much resemblance to the Pursuit of Cobra characters we got, but the vehicles and environments make up for that. Next are some images from SoupGraphix.com, who appear to be a graphic design company much more animated in spirit, but equally cool. They appear to be behind some of the recent Convention logos, and apparently had some input into the G.I. Joe: Renegades logo, too. There are some pretty neat ideas below that we have not seen anywhere. Question is, are they unused logos from projects past, or potential clues about stuff still to come? Many folks consider Larry Hama the godfather of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (with good reason) but right alongside him for the first era of the modern military comic story was Herb Trimpe! A legend in the comic world (did anyone know Trimpe drew Wolverine’s first appearance in Incredible Hulk #180-181?) Trimpe breathed incredible life into both the Joes and the Cobras during those early comic issues.
Well, the guys over at Flag Points brought him on the show and interviewed him, and it is a GREAT listen. If you’re into G.I. Joe or just comics in general, you have to check it out.

Thanks to Entertainment News International for pointing out via LA Times that several studios have lined up advertising for the upcoming Super Bowl, which is notorious for being the largest source of advertising for the entire year.
One of those movie studios is Paramount, and thinking among industry insiders is that the featured film will be G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
This has not yet been confirmed, but it certainly seems likely. Time will tell if any new footage will be shown, but let the countdown begin again!
