As part of the celebration of Sigma 6 and what made the line so appealing to myself and others, I had an opportunity to speak with the folks at Hasbro about Sigma 6, and they were kind enough to answer some questions. Take a peek at the Q & A below.
Huge thanks to Jeff Bohn who has supplied GeneralsJoes with some nicely detailed information about the 6-page Helix comic that comes with the upcoming Electronic Arts G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA video game. The comic leads directly into the IDW Helix special edition, for sale in August. The information is below:
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra: Helix Special EA Edition
Writer: Brian Reed
Artist: Joe Suitor
6 page comic
Hawk shows Duke video of Agent Helix, who has “Total Organic Battlefield Awareness.” Hawk explains that she is missing, that Duke is to find her, and details some of her backstory…
Master practicioner of Capoeira, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Shuai Jiao, Kendo and Fencing. Rumored to be able to master a fighting style after encountering it only once. Fought in underground fights, battling to the death and walking away without a scratch. Traits of savantism, but not autistic. Can identify and solve complex physical calculations quickly. “Everything she sees has a Data Set. Miles left before a car will run out of gas, Ammo counts in the bad guys guns…”
Hawk thinks Cobra may have her.
1 page advertisement for the Helix comic special (which continues the story). Also mentions that you can be Agent Helix in the game.
4 page fold out poster advertising the video game.
2 page interview with game writer Brian Reed. Mentions that Helix was created as a “gamer turned soldier”, which gets fleshed out in the Helix comic special. Mainframe is in the video game as support, non-playable.
2 page interview with Electronic Arts Senior Producer Matt Marsala.
1 page picture of Scarlett.
1 page advertisement for the Mobile Phone video game (http://eamobile.com/gijoe, page doesn’t exist).
Back cover is an advertisement for the video game (same as the fold out poster).
Thanks again to Jeff for this great information. I’m really digging Helix’s backstory. If nothing else, the film is opening up some nice new doors into the G.I. Joe mythos.
A scary article for any G.I. Joe fan has been posted on FirstShowing.net regarding the production of G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA. It states that the film received such low scores during test screenings that director Stephen Sommers was actually fired during post-production and Paramount has been in damage control mode ever since.
This is, of course, only rumor…but I’ll say it leaves me nervous about what we should be expecting come August 7th. Accelerator Suits? I can deal with them. A disfigured COBRA Commander? I’ll roll with that. But low test screening scores, chaotic beaurocratic BS, and frantic damage control all spells “danger” and does not look good going forward. Is any of it true? Nobody really knows at the moment. But whether or not you think you’ll like the film, if it tanks as bad as the article suggests it might, it could be disastrous for the G.I. Joe brand as a whole.
Time will tell, but I’m certainly at least somewhat more trepadacious about the movie now than I was this time yesterday. Click here to check out the article.
I suppose no matter what, at least we’re getting some kick ass toys this year, that may be all we end up with to remember this run by… I certainly hope that it’s not, I guess time will tell. Thanks to Mercer from JoeBattleLines for the intel.
During the heyday of Sigma 6, rumors were flying around that a variant version of the popular Lt. Stone figure was coming out, this time done up in blue armor instead of the normal black. In the end they just proved to be rumors, though, as none were ever spotted at retail or anywhere else, for that matter.
Well, that all goes straight out the window, as Sigma 6 Central forum member hktoyking has posted a photo of this mysterious blue-armor variant! Click here to check out the thread, or view the image below.
The first state-side online sighting for the MARS Trooper 3-Pack has arrived at ToysRUs.com. Click here to check it out…the movie stuff is coming! Retail is $24.99 plus shipping.
ComicsContinuum has posted the 5-Page preview for the upcoming fourth issue of G.I. Joe: COBRA. If the 5-Page preview is any indication, this series is going to continue clicking on all cylinders straight to the end… can’t wait to check out the full issue! Images are posted below.

Thanks to WildWeasel from The Terror Drome for the info!
HissTank forum member “BILL” has received the full compliment of Joes from the Assault on COBRA Island 7-Pack and posted images as well as a quick mini-review over on HissTank.com. Check out the thread and review here, and I’ve also mirrored the images below. Very cool!
We’ve all seen the trailer for the console version of the upcoming Rise of COBRA game, but for the first time, GameTrailers reveals the one for Nintendo DS, which has a decidedly different style:
Sorry for the influx of G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club related news, but I’ve had some time to dig through the site, so I’m uncovering a few things… I’ve seen many questions all over the ‘net regarding the Joe Con, so I just wanted to remind folks to check out the GIJoeCon.com FAQ Page for updates to all your questions and concerns.
Also, “The Commander” has posted some answers to a few questions on the GIJCC Message boards as well:
“1) No fuchsia colors
2) Viper has version 2 “fixed” arms
3) Hasbro limited our 25A mold usage and several of your suggested figure options were “In Production” at the time.”
So…it sounds like using the 25A tooling was a Hasbro dictation? I know it’s easy to cast stones (I certainly have cast my share this year) but I guess we should remember there are several legal and production hoops that the Club has to weave through during the Convention planning process that none of us have any idea about.
I still stand by my opinion on the Con Exclusives this year, but it is at least some food for thought.
Something that has sort of flown under the radar with the rage over the Convention exclusives is the fact that the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club has been slowly but surely updating the outdated archive of past newsletters. According to a news report on June 8th, the entirety of 2008 has been posted to the archive, and it would seem that we can expect 2009 to follow suit.
This was a major complaint that the fans have lodged, so I think it deserves some recognition. Certainly if we can lambaste the Club for decisions we don’t agree with (as I have with the Convention stuff) we can give them credit and kudos for the stuff they’re doing for the fandom sake.
