What’s on Joe Mind Episode 36 is online now

This show went so long it took Gary an extra day to edit!

In all seriousness, the latest episode of Whats on Joe Mind is now online, and trust me when I say, it’s a good one.  Running just over 2 hours, the guys sat down and chatted at length with IDW G.I. Joe artist extraordinaire Robert Atkins, who had all sorts of awesome insight about not only the comics, but the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation film and even the G.I. Joe: Renegades animated series!

We also cover the latest news and intel and just shoot the breeze about all things G.I. Joe.  Hit up our Podbean page to listen or download, and also feel free to use the embedded player below.  Also, if you’re a fan of Robert Atkins, make sure you bookmark his awesome blog and hit it often.  There is generally quite a bit of great G.I. Joe content there, and even when there’s not, he’s got some awesome art that he posts every day.  Pretty incredible.

A huge thanks goes out to the awesome Mr. Atkins for taking some time out of his busy schedule to talk to us.  It was terrific, and an episode I will not forget.

Top Ten Design and Articulation Enhancements in G.I. Joe history

This has been kicking around in my head for a long time…probably ever since the announcement of the death of the o-ring format.  Certainly many fans hold that treasured construction close to their heart, but I am literally stunned at how fast and furiously the movement has been to the new “modern era” style.  Even five years ago, if the figure wasn’t an “o-ring” it was immediately cast aside as inferior, and now here we are in 2010, and the fandom at large as moved far away from the o-ring format, and has happily embraced something totally different.

With the (albeit remote) possibility out there that G.I. Joe: Retaliation may re-invent the wheel yet again, I really got thinking…over the past 28 years, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero has undergone a number of format changes and face lifts.  Which were the best or most impactful?

Now for this list, I’m not counting the o-ring.  That was a standard from day one.  I’m specifically talking about enhancements.  A change or progression that moved the toyline along and continued to revolutionize the industry.  So, let’s get to it.

More cool G.I. Joe artwork at CG Hub

A few days ago, thanks to Greg and notpicard, I shared some Rise of Cobra concept art via CG Hub…well, again, thanks to notpicard, who dug a little deeper, we’ve found some other G.I. Joe related artwork from various sources.

Stuff from the 25th Anniversary, G.I. Joe: Resolute, and the Pursuit of Cobra.  Pretty neat stuff here.  The users are Wesley Burt and Jarreau Wimberly, and they have some very cool art posted apparently used for Hasbro product.

Keep in mind a lot of the art there is just fan art, but there are some things certainly done for Hasbro proper.  Check out the mirrored images below.

Amazing cover artwork for IDW’s Cobra Command

Over on his Ryalltime blog, IDW Editor Chris Ryall has taken three separate covers from Kelsey Shannon, which are on G.I. Joe #11, Snake Eyes #11, and Cobra #11, and combined them into one large image.

It is… stunning.  Seriously.  This is one heck of an awesome piece of artwork.  I love the new Cobra Commander design, I love the face off between the Joes and the Cobra’s.  This is just fantastic.

Check out Chris Ryall’s blog, and take a peek at the mirrored image below.  Try not to drool.

Big Bad Toy Store has their Dreadnoks and Marauders 7-Packs!

The moment many fans have been waiting for!  The Big Bad Toy Store exclusive Dreadnoks and Slaughter Marauder 7-Packs are in stock now!  Using some existing tooling, but also a heck of a lot of new tooling, these great new 7-packs give Joe fans a lot of the classic characters they’ve been waiting for, and still some new twists.

I’ve been lucky enough to have these in hand for a while now, and they are worth every penny.  Check out the links below to BUY EM UP!

If you want to educate yourself on the merits of the figures before plunking down the change, I’ve reviewed them both on my 30th Anniversary Review Page as well!

G.I. Joe fans represent! Vote G.I. Joe: Retaliation at the MTV Movie Brawl

Over on his Twitter page, Jon Chu has encouraged fans to step up and place their votes!

The MTV Movie Blog is featuring a 2012 Movie Brawl, which takes several genre films from 2012 and puts them up against each other in a fight to the finish.  Currently the Hunger Games and Twilight are tied for the lead, and that hurts me to my soul.

Can we muster enough Joe power to knock one of them off?  You never know until you try!

GeneralsJoes reviews IDW G.I. Joe #9 – Cobra Command Begins now!

I do have to admit that it seemed as if the Cobra Civil War kind of came to a sudden and grinding halt in mid-stream.  I mean, the storyline progression made a certain amount of sense, but I never really felt this culmination to a thrilling finale or anything, it just kept on steamrolling ahead, and then suddenly it was over.

I did like the end resolution, and I agree with the promotion of that particular character to the Cobra Commander role, but I just felt like it just suddenly ended.

Even with that in mind, I did feel more invested in the IDW universe post Cobra Civil War than I had before it, and found myself looking forward to the whole Cobra Command storyline to see where things go from here.  I tried to hold my enthusiasm in check, since the main line G.I. Joe title isn’t my favorite, but it turns out, I came away quite impressed.

Yes the art for EA’s Rise of Cobra game is better than the game itself

Wow.  Now maybe someone remembers me talking about this already, but I don’t think I did.

With the launch of the first G.I. Joe film in 2009, Electronic Arts released a licensed game as companies are wont to do, and the game was pretty widely panned as these licensed games generally are. However, one cool thing about the game, in my opinion, was the designs of the characters.  They took the Rise of Cobra aesthetic and tweaked it a bit with more military elements to pretty good effect.

But, thanks to notpicard and Greg from What’s on Joe Mind who pointed this art site to me, there was a nice amount of unused concept art that completely and totally ROCKED.  Stuff that wasn’t used in the game.  Sure, a lot of it walked that line between current military realism and future technology, but I’ll be damned if every one of these concepts isn’t really bad ass.  I would kill to see some of this stuff in toy form.

You can find the gallery at CGHub.com and I’ve also mirrored many images below.  There are a ton of great pictures hosted at the site, you should definitely check it out.  Now I feel like I want to go home and play this game again!
