What’s on Joe Mind Special Edition 07 – Two Words: Larry Hama

The man, the myth, the legend.  The guys from What’s on Joe Mind were lucky enough to spend about an hour talking with one of the fathers of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Larry Hama himself!

We talk about his great work on the current IDW Real American Hero title as well as his philosophy behind comics writing and just a 60 minute look into his mindset.

This special edition really requires no explanation.  We are joined by Marvel’s legendary GI Joe writer, Larry Hama.  We find out a lot in this interview.  What were the early difficulties in the IDW ARAH run?  What’s Larry’s dream job?  What does Larry mean when he calls GI Joe, Junior Woodchucks with guns?  What happens when Hasbro takes over the filecard creation process?  Why is writing a “toy book” the lowest of the low?  Why was three years the original magic number for Joe and other books like it?  How much of a risk was the USS Flagg playset?  We also talk about his upcoming Roll Out/Roll Call 3 and SDCC appearances and we even talk a little about Kwinn to boot.  Oh, and wait until you hear what he thinks (or doesn’t think) about Wraith and Helix.  It is a surprising and eye opening talk with the guy who authored a good part of our childhoods.  As a productions side note, please excuse the buzz in audio.  Larry has a deep but very soft voice so we had to crank up the audio to hear him clearly.  As for the other bad audio, well, let’s just say Justin won’t forget his headset again.  Thanks to Larry for joining us.  You can meet him next at Roll Out/Roll Call 3 in Southampton, UK March 10th and 11th!

SHOW NOTES

Its the post Toy Fair 2012 edition of WOJM. Justin fills us in with what he saw and with what he talked with Hasbro about. Also joining us are Arune Singh, the Director of Communications for Marvel Comics and Brian Truitt from USA Today. Arune and Brian hang out with us for the session and give their thoughts on Toy Fair and the line going forward into Retaliation. We answer some listener mail concerning Justin’s psychic insight into the movie and another letter from a listener who has concerns about the cut back in articulation. In the news, the obvious discussion was about Toy Fair, but they also covered the surprising television ratings of the network TV debut of The Rise of Cobra on the USA Network. Lastly we cover the news of Jim Sorenson’s Joe animation model book. Its an episode chalked full of opinion of Toy Fair, so don’t miss it! Apologies for Chuck’s Time/Warner issues.

Show Notes

How many Patriots jokes can we fit into one episode?  We give it our best shot this time as we do our second ever crossover episode, this time with the Ryan and Chuck from the Star Joes Podcast!  Now you all have met Chuck before, so this time we get to meet Ryan and learn a little bit more about him and the chemistry between he and Chuck that makes Star Joes a podcast that you should listen to – immediately after our show of course, shameless plug not withstanding.  Much of the first half of the show is run by Ryan as we have a mini Star Joes episode including the WOJM guys into their regular show segments.  In the second half we are joined by Craig from the Fwooshcast once more and we revert back to WOJM mode starting first with the mailbag where we get an update from our favorite active duty Marine, Will Bell.  Will’s tour is now complete and he is home from Afghanistan, but that is not the full story.  We also read and answer a letter from Vince who asks how do we feel about being the unofficial voice of the hobby and whether or not we use our respective show powers for what is good and right or use our voices as a bully pulpit to forward any agendas we might have. In the news, we talk about the new Movie 2 toys and the new Movie 2 trailers that we saw during the Super Bowl and we begin to look toward Toy Fair in New York City, home of the World Champion Giants. Trailers, Toys and a beaten Tom Brady.  Join us and the fellas from Star Joes…oh, AND Craig too; all on this episode of WOJM!   How ’bout them Patriots!?

What’s on Joe Mind Episode 40 with Matt King is online now!

This episode was a blast.  Being able to spend an hour talking to the mastermind behind Tunnel Rat in G.I. Joe: Renegades was truly educational.  Hearing how he got his start, and who he’s connected with over the years was an amazing experience, and we were all captivated by how easily he fell into Tunnel Rat’s very distinctive voice throughout the interview.

Of course, along with Matt King, we also spoke with Alexx from Alexx’s Shorts, one of the funniest and best G.I. Joe reviewers on the ‘net…at least he was until he turned down my marriage proposal.  Go check out Podbean to listen, or just click on the embedded player below.  Enjoy!

What’s on Joe Mind Episode 39 is Online now!

A lesson in podcasting, folks!  If you get a group of guys together for a couple of hours a week for 9 months straight, eventually tempers might flare… a bit.  Episode 39 is an example of this.  All of us on What’s on Joe Mind have very specific, dedicated ideas of what we want for the show, and some times those ideals don’t gel, and sometimes we get a bit heated.  I think that’s a good example of why the show is so well received.  We are all very opinionated and care very much about putting the best product out there as humanly possible.  Generally we’re able to talk out our disagreements off-air, but sometimes…  well those disagreements come out.

Regardless, I still think Episode 39 was a good one.  We had Chris Sims from Comics Alliance on the program, which unfortunately for him, put him front and center to some bickering, but I think the whole thing went well.  Don’t let Gary dissuade you.  😉

It was a host-packed show with Gary, Chuck, Greg, Justin, Craig, AND Mike all in the house alongside Chris Sims and I think folks will enjoy it if you can get over the spats.
