12 for ’12 – GeneralsJoes Top 12 G.I. Joe news stories of 2012

Whatever you think about the state of G.I. Joe throughout 2012, I don’t think anyone can argue that it was a slow year for news.  Quite the opposite!  Going from nearly daily reports of movie updates, to the downward spiral of G.I. Joe: Retaliation confidence, and finally finding some middle ground with the great regional gatherings of Joe fans and the countless great independent projects.

It was quite the interesting year for G.I. Joe, and in celebration of 2012, I’m picking the top 12 news stories for the year.  They may be good, they may be bad, but the end result is a collection of events throughout 2012 that paints a pretty cool picture when we look back on it.  Click the Read the Rest of the Story link below for the run down.

12 for ’12 – GeneralsJoes Top 12 What’s on Joe Mind Episodes of 2012

So did you think 2012 was a slow year for G.I. Joe?  While the fine folks behind the What’s on Joe Mind Podcast did drop down their recording schedule a bit to accommodate a slow trickle of Joe news, there were still many exciting G.I. Joe events to talk about.

From animated voice actors to movie news and toy reports, What’s on Joe Mind covered the gamut of G.I. Joe news and events for the year.

Even with a much slower recording schedule in the back half of 2012, it was tough to pick out 12 isolated episodes, but with Gary and Mike’s help, somehow I made due.

The first two figures from the FSS, and why I haven’t talked about them… yet.

As everyone knows at this point, the first package from Wave 1 of the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club Figure Subscription Service (FSS) has been shipped, and has been received by more and more collectors throughout the world.

As everyone also knows at this point, the “surprise” of the two figures contained within lasted for all of about two hours before it was front-paged.  Thankfully the post was spoiler-warninged, so folks who didn’t want to know knew to avoid it, but I am reassuring you the same thing will happen here.

But first I want to talk a little bit about the concept of surprise and the vilification of the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club for continuing to support the idea of surprise with their product.  Is it a little silly for them to insist on surprising their fanbase when their fanbase doesn’t seem to want to be surprised?  Yeah, it probably is.  Does that mean they should stop doing it?  I don’t know…  I don’t think so.

Try and remember for a second what we’re talking about here.  This is toy collecting.  Buying action figures.  Yes, we are adult collectors and I know its “serious business” but doesn’t any small part of you long to go back in time to when we were kids?  I’m not sure about anyone else, but one of the clearest memories I have of buying G.I. Joe figures back in the day was walking into a Rich’s Department Store in New Hampshire and finding the ’85 figures on the pegs.  The feeling you get as your eyes focus on the blisters, just trying to see if there’s anything new there, or if it’s just the same old thing you’ve seen several times before.  As kids, we walked into those aisles having absolutely no clue what we were going to find…and the feeling when we did find something was fantastic.  Scooping that Flint, Snake Eyes, and Quick Kick off those pegs when 10 minutes sooner I had absolutely no idea they even existed was one of the biggest thrills of my young collecting life.  Is it so bad to at least relive some of that today?

I know the Internet drives us all to immediate gratification and the feeling that we are owed something.  We are owed answers as soon as we demand them, and there is no place left for surprise.

Screw that.  Sometimes it’s more fun being a kid, and looking forward to the unknown.  Sometimes toy collecting doesn’t have to be “serious business”.  Sometimes, it just should be stupid fun.  Yeah, I know I’m in the minority there, but I think I can live with that.  😉

For you instant gratification folks, the first two FSS figures are listed after the jump.  If you’re trying to avoid spoilers, continue on…

First confirmed receipt of Figure Subscription Service figures by RagingSpoon

And kudos to him for obliging the Club’s request to keep the surprise!  RagingSpoon over on HissTank.com is reporting that he has received his first installment of the Figure Subscription Service figures!

The G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club requested in the beginning that folks who receive these figures not announce who they are so the surprise can be maintained for others, and RagingSpoon is complying with that request.  However, collectors should start  watching their mailboxes, because they are inbound.

See the thread on HissTank.com.

First report of shipping notice for GIJCC Figure Subscription Service!

We’ve all received the emailed status updates about the Figure Subscription Service, but we now have our first actual report of a shipping notice received!

GeneralsJoes Twitter friend OB1Knobby reports that he has gotten notification from Fed Ex that the first installment for the FSS will arrive at his home on Thursday.  To the best of my knowledge, this is the first confirmed shipping notice received for an FSS shipment.

Start watching those mailboxes!  We will soon discover who the first two figures shipped are.  Huge thanks to OB1Knobby for the heads up.

What’s on Joe Mind – Special Edition #21 Convention Announcement

It’s become a regular event… a landmark occasion…  a national treasure.

Okay, maybe that’s going a bit too far.  But let’s face it, folks seem to enjoy our Convention announcement special editions, and we work hard to try and provide as much information as humanly possible.  This episode should be especially enjoyable, what with the 60 minutes of Gary bitching and moaning and all.

Seriously…the 2013 Convention is in his home town and he complains?  Chump.

But there’s stuff in here for everyone else as well… what should you expect at the Con?  How much money is it going to cost?  What the heck is there to do in Indianapolis?  We answer it all right here!  Check out our Podbean page or the embedded player below, and Show Notes are after the jump.
