With the early years of G.I. Joe getting some serious credit with the Anniversary figures, it was only a matter of time before Hasbro started dipping into the late 80’s to find some good subject matter, and personally, I can’t think of a better subject than Shockwave. One of my long time favorites, Shockwave is a great character and a great figure, and definitely deserves to get some recognition. It was pretty obvious once the Comic Pack Firefly hit retail that Shockwave was at least on the radar, and by the looks of things, he just barely squeaked in, as it would seem the Anniversary line has petered out for the year.

I know, I know…my reviews have taken quite a bit of a hit lately and gotten thrust onto the back burner. For folks who aren’t aware, my review “shooting area” is in my garage. My unheated garage. I live in New England, and for the past 3 months it’s been pretty damned cold, and frankly, sitting in the unheated garage and taking pictures for a c0uple of hours ain’t really high on my list of fun things to do. But that’s a lame excuse…and now I’m going to at least try and get back on the review train with the Wave 1 Comic Packs.

G.I. Joe: COBRA co-writer Christos Gage (who is working alongside Mike Costa) spent a few minutes talking to Newsarama about his various projects, including the upcoming limited series, G.I. Joe: COBRA, which is hitting comic shops March 18th.
Check out the video here, specifically starting at the 1:47 mark.
The full transcription is here:
“Mike Costa – who is a very talented up-and-coming young writer and who someday soon I will be coming to, begging for him to help me get work – and I are writing a G.I. Joe: Cobra mini-series that is the most hardcore G.I. Joe that you will ever read. I’m serious.
I’ll be honest. One of the reasons I brought Mike in to co-write is because, a) I was really busy, but also he knows the world and I don’t know the world very well. This is the kind of thing, the character of Chuckles, the things we’re doing with him? I’m like, if they did this with Daredevil, I’d be really mad. I was like, “Are people gonna be really mad at me?” And Mike’s like, “Hasbro’s fine with it, it’ll be really cool!”
We’re having a lot of fun. If you like Ed Brubaker’s Sleeper, even if you’ve never read a G.I. Joe book, you should get this because it’s about a guy, a character named Chuckles infiltrating Cobra. And in the name of trying to bring them down from within, he’s forced to do even more and more evil and extreme stuff, and it’s a question about “If you’re doing the wrong things for the right reasons, can you maintain your sanity, your humanity and your soul?”

Heh…it’s just barely G.I. Joe related, and it’s not even G.I. Joe scale, but I couldn’t resist showcasing this amazing miniature wargame project. I’ve never gotten into the whole Warhammer or other miniature gaming world, but maybe if more of the sets looked like this I would have! Click on the link below to witness the awesomeness:
Action Force vs. Red Shadows
The detail in the paintwork, especially at such a small scale is absolutely insane. I am in love with those Z-Force vehicles as well. A really amazing looking set of very nicely painted and modified figures at a tiny scale. I really dig this.

Overseas seller ws_toys has come through with another early Rise of COBRA action figure auction, this time for a COBRA Neo-Viper. The price stands at $14.99, and you can see the auction here, or if you’re just interested in the pictures, click on the thumbnails below.

I’m really interested to hear the fandom’s thoughts on this figure. I know, by and large, the movie stuff has been getting panned, but I think as long as you’re not tied to nostalgia there are some things to appreciate. I really love the skull-themed face mask, personally. For folks like me, not married to the red/black scarf and helmet, there are some pretty neat “future tech” elements at play here. Sure, this isn’t like your garden variety straight from the 80’s COBRA Trooper, but let’s not forget ever since 2000, G.I. Joe has been “evolving”, and as the next step in evolution, I think these troopers have at least some merit. The layered armor, the fearsome appearence, and the state-of-the-art weaponry are all pretty cool, I think, even if they’re not at all reminiscent of the tried and true COBRA Troopers or Vipers. I’m actually looking forward to seeing how these guys look on screen. But something tells me I’m in the minority…
