With the 2012 Toy Fair wrapping up today for Hasbro, many big name media outlets and Hollywood folks were walking through the Hasbro showroom. You had to know that some interviews would take place, and Mike Ryan from Huffington Post got a big one!
He took a few minutes to talk with G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu, who dropped some serious plot nuggets that are sure to open some eyes. I won’t regurgitate the entire interview here, but I do want to touch on a few things:
“Joseph Gordon-Levitt is not in this movie. Under the mask, is this the same character that Levitt played?
No. [Smiling] But we figured out a way that’s pretty nice. And you get the Cobra Commander that you’ve always wanted. Or, to me, what I always wanted: a bad-ass villain. He’s one of the most iconic villains ever. I’m even following him on Twitter — he’s so funny.”
Woah. You read it there, folks. The Cobra Commander we see in G.I. Joe: Retaliation is not the same guy from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. So the scene where we think Storm Shadow is “rescuing” him… maybe that’s not what’s happening there. Very interesting.
The next bit of knowledge brought a big smile to my face as well:
“And we may see Destro?
[Smiling] You may see a little glimpse of Destro. We’ll have to see. Speaking of the comic book, I love “Silent Interlude.” It’s one of my favorite. Obviously that changed everything for Joe. We do a little homage in our movie to “Silent Interlude.” I’m very excited for the fans to see what we do with that.”
So, a little glimpse of Destro and an homage to Silent Interlude. Hmmm…
Any way, the interview is a fantastic read. Everyone needs to check it out. Lots of great illumination about the mindset behind the G.I. Joe: Retaliation film, a much larger focus on gritty action and bullets over lasers, and a story that Mr. Chu says is much more “comic” themed than the Rise of Cobra. Check it out right here.
Yes, there was about 4 seconds of new footage, but still some interesting details mixed within those four seconds! We quite possibly got our first on screen look at the Cobra HISS Tank, a better view of Cobra Commander and Firefly, and lots of shots of President Zartan addressing the leaders of the World.
Good stuff!
And yes, as the movie gets closer, expect me to dive into and pick apart every minute detail. I’m a little OCD like that, sorry. Check out the screen caps below.
Thanks to the Daily Blam for reporting that the French trailer for upcoming G.I. Joe motion picture sequel actually has some NEW footage, and some impressive new footage to boot! Great close up of the Ripsaw Tank, an extended scene with Cobra Commander and the President… WOW.
Well, this is a lot quicker when there’s only a 30 second TV spot and some reused footage to deal with!
I buzzed through the Super Bowl TV Spot and with the wonders of Quicktime spat out a few screen caps that show some of the interesting new details from this TV Spot. Chief among them are the following:
Jinx looks very bad ass in the red, and we have a very nice, clear shot of the Blind Master
Snake Eyes manages to shoot throwing stars out of mid air with an UZI!
Yes, Virginia, Firefly WILL wear his familiar camouflage mask in Retaliation. And he looks BOSS.
Roadblock quotes Jay-Z just because
Oh my goodness that’s COBRA FREAKING COMMANDER!!
Super Cobra speed bike with “fall apart and turn into death rockets” mode!
That certainly looks like Firefly on the back of the motorcycle as well
Is that a Pursuit of Cobra looking HISS rising up above an explosion in the desert? Could there be a “Ripsaw” and another larger Cobra version of the vehicle?
Awesome view of what seems to be the Ripsaw…or is it the HISS? Almost looks like someone in a white mask driving it. Storm Shadow?
No matter how many times I see it, Snake Eyes kicking ninjas asses off of mountains is awesome
It started innocently enough…a Tweet from G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M Chu asking the following:
“Dear #GIJoeRETALIATION fans…. get ready…….”
Ready for what? Ready, apparently, for a trailer launch during the biggest television spectacle of the year!
According Jon Chu on Twitter, we WILL be seeing a new trailer on TV during the Super Bowl on Sunday! Patriots football and a new G.I. Joe trailer? I may just pass out from awesomeness on Sunday.
