Licensing.biz reports that Titan Books is planning to release a companion book to the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA film entitled G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA Mission Dossier. According to the article:
“The paperback companion chronicles the making of the movie, combining cast and crew commentary with in-universe intel on GI Joe team members and their enemies in the Cobra organization.
Information on weapons, gadgets, vehicles and missions is also included, along with numerous colour photos, film stills, schematics and production art.”
The book will arrive in the United States July 21st just ahead of the movie. Read the entire article here.
With Star Trek, Transformers, and G.I. Joe all getting the summer blockbuster treatment in 2009, Comic Book Resources took some time and spoke with Andy Schmidt, Editor for IDW Publishing on the challenges and opportunities working with three separate licenses that are all receiving a lot of outside attention this year. Mr. Schmidt also takes some time to speak about the Combat Heroes style kid’s book, “We Are G.I. Joe”. You can read the article here, I’ve also reprinted the G.I. Joe related content below.
A very different project, the “G.I. Joe Combat Heroes: We Are G.I. Joe” picture book, is a bit unusual for IDW. The book introduces the heroic Joes and villains of Cobra to young readers, much as “Transformers: I am Optimus Prime” did for the Autobots and Decepticons. “[Writing ‘We Are G.I. Joe’] was a lot of fun. I hope that kids and parents alike enjoy it,” Schmidt said. “And no, there are no rifles or pistols in the whole thing. Swords, throwing stars, crossbows, and tanks, yes, but no pistols or rifles. Look closely and you may see a couple of very intimidating Super-Soakers though!”
A few different images of carded and boxed items from the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA line have started popping up over at the TerrorDrome and HissTank.com. So far we have an Arctic Assault Snake Eyes, a COBRA Para-Viper repaint, and the Dragonhawk XH1 w/ Wild Bill! I’m a bit disappointed that the Para-Viper is a single card, normal release, I was kind of hoping that would fall under an exclusive umbrella somewhere, but we’ll see. They can’t all be winners, I guess. 😉
Don’t get me wrong, the Para-Viper is a very nice looking figure, he just can’t really do anything besides stand there, and I’m not real sure how well his style meshes with the normal movie stuff. Anyway, the images are hosted below.
Beginning in July, IDW will be putting out a four-issue adaptation of G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA, with each of the four issues hitting each week. Phil from JoeReloaded has kindly posted a 5-page preview of the first installment, which is up on JoeReloaded. We’ve also hosted it below.
Movie webside Collider.com has posted a video interview with G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA producer Lorenzo di Bonventura, which includes a few details about the film (though admittedly, not many). The one specific revelation is that the film clocks in at 1 hour and 47 minutes.
Check out the original page here, or take a peek at the embedded video below.
Friend of GeneralsJoes “DJ in RI” made quite a find when he stumbled upon the movie novelization at his local Target Department Store a few days ago. He very kindly offered to give me his take on the story and the way events unfold in the film. This is not a script review from a script over a year old! This is a review of the film novelization, so as you can imagine, it is spoiler-rich with some details about the movie. However, DJ was also careful not to reveal everything. Gotta leave some surprises out there. 😉
Judging by the review, it sounds like a lot of the events of the final film are similar to what we saw with the early script drafts…but I think some things have definitely changed. In fact, I know they have just based on the various trailers and tv spots.
But regardless of my thoughts…the full review is after the jump, the parts with spoilers are clearly marked. A big thanks to DJ for taking some time to do this!
Early this morning I reported on the leaked vehicle images that had shown up, and I’ve spent the morning doing some research, and I’ve got a little elaboration on what these items may be. Keep in mind, this is hypothetical on my part, but I’m feeling pretty good about what I’ve got here, notes-wise.
Desert Rockslide w/ Dusty (Alpha Vehicle)
COBRA Lava Pod w/ Volcano Viper (Alpha Vehicle)
Tiger Claw w/ Leatherneck (Alpha Vehicle)
Polar Shark Sub w/ Ice Storm (Alpha Vehicle)
Snow Cat w/ Whiteout (Bravo Vehicle)
COBRA Fury w/ Alley-Viper (Bravo Vehicle)
This information was gleaned from retailer lists and some process of elimination. We should find out at SDCC how accurate this little list is. I’ve also got non-watermarked versions of the images hosted below!
July is right around the corner, and the official street date for the G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA toys is bearing down upon us fast and furious. Smaller retailers are starting to get these items in early, as gunslingercbr reports from HissTank.com. Also Terror Drome member Firefly, who is a Toys “R” Us employee mentions that his store has started receiving stock with a street date marked July 10th.
I know I’m risking fandom onslaught for this, but from my own personal perspective, I haven’t been looking this forward to a new G.I. Joe line since the Sigma 6 days. I am just flat out ecstatic waiting for these movie figures…the early stuff that I’ve seen so far has been impressive to say the least, and I am just loving what they’re doing design-wise for the video game related stuff, too. I love the Reactive Armor suits, Flash and Helix are blowing my skirt up in a big way, and I’m just fired up to once again get dropped into a brand new mythology. From the prequel comic to the Above and Beyond novel, the video game, and the movie itself, we’re really getting a nice new sandbox to play with our toys in, and I absolutely cannot wait. Bring it on!
Good friend of GeneralsJoes, madmac41 from JoeBattleLines has posted some images and mini-reviews for the recently released Wave 5 vehicles. Read the text below, links to the original threads are in the titles…check out the great mini reviews with a ton of pictures after the jump!
