It’s a Toy Fair tradition! Yay?
I’ve compiled my piles of images from the showroom as well as from the press releases, and assembled a very rough draft for the 2011 SuperPage.
I have a lot of organizational things to work out in my head… should the first two waves be pulled back into the PoC SuperPage? Should Waves 1 & 2 (AKA Waves 3 and 4 that we got this year, which were technically 2011 Waves 1 and 2) be pushed to the 2011 page?
I dunno. It’s freaking midnight and I’m too tired to think about it right now. For the moment check out the 2011 SuperPage right here and let me know if you recommend any changes or organizational stuff.
Bed time. It was a whirlwind, but a fun one as always. Big thanks to Mike, Joe, Danny, and the other array of Hunter PR staff who lead us around the toyroom…and of course a big thanks and “welcome back” to Derryl DePriest, who appears to be taking a larger role in G.I. Joe these days. We’re better for it!

Ummm… wow?
I just spent several hours at the fan presentation, and then a few more hours taking pictures during the showroom tour, and I never saw any figures for Stalker, Sci-Fi, or Storm Shadow. So I finally get to a landline here and “surprise!”
Judging by appearance, I’d estimate these guys are falling within the “30 for 30” lineup later on in the year. They weren’t in the online pre-orders, and weren’t in the slideshow presentation, so that’s what I’m thinking.
For anyone who missed them, here are the official Hasbro press pics:

Stalker looks to be a great update to our favorite Army Ranger, using Snake Eyes parts with the Resolute head sculpt! Bad ass. Sci-Fi looks pretty incredible as well, and fills another important hole in the 1986 lineup. Lastly, Storm Shadow is obviously a Renegades inspiration, but he looks even cooler here than he does in the cartoon. Love it.

Okay! It’s photo dump time! I’m sitting in Grand Central Station right now with my camera card chock full and ready to upload. I apologize for the lack of organization right off the bat, but I’m trying to get this done nice and quick-like so I can make a train back home. This is how things are laid out.

Spring, 2011 Assortments
As I create the SuperPage, I’ll break up the assortments into their waves, but for now, here’s what I’ve got for the spring assortments, including
– Cobra Commander
– Cobra Trooper
– Iron Grenadier
– Rock Viper
– Techno Viper
– General Hawk
– Steel Brigade
– Crazylegs
– Croc Master
These look to be a very nice mix of existing tooling with some nice new paint applications really bringing these figures to life. Some awesome use of some Pursuit of Cobra molds, the Jungle Assault Cobra Commander looks to be the base for Cobra Commander, and some terrific other paint jobs. Iron Grenadier is even sporting the unused Stedi-Cam from Destro. The Cobra Viper (using the Shock Trooper tooling) is pretty impressive as well. Images below.

Fall, 2011 Assortment “30 for 30”
A very interesting way to put it, Derryl DePriest referred to the Joe line starting in 2011 as a “30 for 30” line, meaning a plethora of figures from different eras and concepts in one single “rebranded” line. From the images, there is an obvious Pursuit of Cobra theme, which suits me perfectly fine.
He mentioned a smaller volume, but a much tighter “concentration” of fan favorites and well conceived figures, very similar to what we’ve seen this year. From my first hand perspective, these figures look fantastic. They have really merged the Renegades look with the realistic tooling to near perfection, especially with Firefly and Cobra Commander. Note the full mask!
This just comprises the first wave, hitting in August of 2011, so expect more reveals at JoeCon and SDCC.

Bravo Vehicles
We got no real details on waves for these, so I assume they might be hitting all at once. We’ve got a great crimson HISS with a re-conceived Elite-Viper driver. The VAMP Mark II has an absolutely fantastic looking “Steel Brigade Delta” figure. Didn’t get to see the pilot of the Black Dragon.

SDCC Zarana
Derryl admitted this was an “oopsie”. Zarana probably shouldn’t have been showcased, because she is NOT A DEFINITE FOR SDCC. They are still weighing their options to see if they can get both Zarana and the Starscream Skystriker. If not, the Skystriker will win out. If they can’t get Zarana for SDCC, she will ABSOLUTELY hit in the main line somewhere.

Skystriker
It looks gorgeous. Feels like it was pulled right from 1983. Awesome colors, black tail fins and some great detail. Not much else to say.

I get a really good feeling, looking at these toys. It’s quite clear that the G.I. Joe line is not their central priority this year (which makes sense, given Transformers 3, Captain America, Thor, and Clone Wars) but they are taking the resources they have and doing some amazing things with it. The Cobra Trooper, while a simple repaint, looks INSANE. Same with General Hawk and the Iron Grenadier. Holy crap they look cool up close and personal.
And the Renegades figures? I wasn’t sold at first with seeing them in a realistic style, but it really works. Firefly especially looks astoundingly cool.
So, in short, don’t expect huge volumes of product, but it sure looks like the Pursuit of Cobra mantra is alive and well, and the long time vintage fans are getting some serious bones thrown their way, too. Very, very good stuff.

Tomorrow is the big day, and while G.I. Joe’s mention was noticeably absent from the official Hasbro Press Release today, I know there will still be some cool new stuff to look at in New York City tomorrow.
I’ll be there with camera in hand, and as next week goes along, the latest SuperPage will get made up, and as you’ve come to expect, GeneralsJoes will be right there with the information and the insight. The Fan event starts at 1:00pm Eastern, and generally takes a few hours. I can usually get myself to Grand Central by 4:30 – 5:00pm to take advantage of their free wireless and start getting stuff uploaded.
Also as a reminder, I will be Tweeting my ass off tomorrow (or trying to, at least, as I did today), so if you want to be first in line with the intel, follow me on Twitter.
I may even (though I’m not sure yet) set the site here to archive the Tweets as they go through, just to keep updates in both places. We’ll see.
Yo Joe! Next stop.. well, next stop is G.I. Joe: Renegades Episode 10 tonight. Then on to New York City.
by generalsjoes | Feb 8, 2011 | G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe Toys, Pursuit of COBRA
Gyre-Viper is at it again…or more appropriately, has been at it again, since he posted these images a few days ago. I hadn’t jumped on the bandwagon yet because, well…. honestly? I’m not all that wild about the Jungle B.A.T. I think it looks kind of silly, actually. Some cool attachments could save it, but if it comes with the same three attachments we’ve all seen ad infinitum, I will be severely disappointed, especially considering the Pursuit of Cobra greatness we’re currently surrounded by.
Granted, it’s part of an assortment that wasn’t supposed to exist 6 months ago, so the fact that Hasbro whipped up some repaints and filler figures to keep Joe fans interested until the real stuff hits in August is something we all have to consider. If the Jungle B.A.T. (and other figures alongside it in the early part of the year) is a bit lackluster, I wouldn’t expect that to indicate some sort of downward spiral. I think we’ll see some awesome stuff at Toy Fair, Joe Con, and SDCC.
