Coverage of IDW Comics Panel from 2012 G.I. Joe Convention

The whole Convention weekend is such a whirlwind, I often don’t have time to reflect on things I missed until afterwards.  And unfortunately I missed a pretty big one this past weekend when I was pulled away during the IDW Comics panel on Saturday.  I had been looking forward to the panel, especially considering Carlos Guzman was the speaker, and he edits my favorite book these days, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.  However, the quick pace of the Con pulled me elsewhere at that same time.

Thankfully, someone was there to bail me out!  Anyone who has read this site or listened to What’s on Joe Mind is probably familiar with Jay, who runs CardedHeroes.com.  Well, his wife Mo (who you can actually hear on the “Ladies’ Night” Special Edition Episode of What’s on Joe Mind) attended JoeCon, and as a huge comic buff, she was front and center for the IDW panel.  I reached out to her, and she was very kind enough to write up a fantastic piece on the IDW panel.

I cannot thank her enough.  I strive to try and have the most in depth and thorough coverage as a I can, and I’m quite disappointed in myself that I wasn’t able to make the IDW panel.  Thank you, Mo, for yanking my butt out of the fire.

Of course, there are also many other great seminars being shown, like the 1982 panel from Kirk Bozigian, the Costume Play panel from Cobra’s Finest, Operation: Shooting Star! which showcases how some of the awesome 90’s era themed brands came about.  There are also the voice actor panels, Mark Bellomo’s informative presentation, and the Art of G.I. Joe with Rod Whigham and Larry Selman.  The full schedule of events for the Convention weekend and the seminars can be found at GIJoeCon.com right here.

G.I. Joe Con 2012 Attendee Exclusives revealed

As has become the custom, thanks to the Golden Ticket early pick up and the Convention comic (which contains a listing of exclusives as well as the comic art itself) we are getting a clear picture about what to expect from the G.I. Joe Convention exclusives tomorrow night.

First and foremost, the attendee exclusive was revealed to be an Oktober Guard themed repaint of the Rise of Cobra Snarler Cycle, pictured below.

Along with this reveal, we also discovered that the Convention Exclusive attendee items for 2012 are the following:

  • Annihilator 3-Pack (LE 650)
  • IG Ground Assault 2-Pack (LE 1,000)
  • Cobra Stealth Paratrooper (LE 500)
  • OG Attack Helicopter (LE 600)
  • Soviet Convoy Truck w/ 3 Tops (LE 500)

Based on what we see withn in the comic, I think it’s a fair guess that the Annihilator 3-Pack will feature 3 Annihilators, most likely using the backpack helicopter that came with the 25th Anniversary Matt Trakker.  From some pieces of the comic art it looks as if they will use some Iron Grenadier parts, based on the back of the legs and the gauntlets.  The helmet in the far away shot almost looks like an Ice Viper or other Rise of Cobra large-visored head sculpt.

Because of his prominence throughout the Con comic, it’s also a no-brainer that Darklon will likely be a part of the IG Ground Assault 2-Pack and he looks to have a new head sculpt, the same webgear as the Marauders Taurus figure with a healthy dose of Pursuit of Cobra Firefly parts underneath.  The other figure is sort of a mystery.

No ideas about the Cobra Stealth Paratrooper other than it’s most likely the parachute figure and will not be available for sale until after the parachute drop on Friday.

Oktober Guard Attack Helicopter appears to be a repainted Rise of Cobra Dragonhawk, while the Soviet Convoy truck looks like the truck from Indiana Jones, which actually works fairly well in this regard.

I’ll be honest, this is a LOT more exclusives than I expected.  Two vehicles and two separate figure packs, not to mention carded Footloose.  Speaking of carded Footloose, the Club has brought 500 of them to the Con and they are limited to ONE PER PERSON including Golden Ticket holders.  The reason for this according to Brian Savage is that they are not convention items, they are Club items, and they are specifically holding some back to sell after the Convention, something that is sure to please a number of fans out there.

Conspicuous by his absence as well is Dragonsky, who has been a hotly desired part of this Con set, but it looks like he will not come with this particular set.  The reason I assume that is that he does show up in the Convention comic, but his uniform is based on the 2004 Comic Pack version, with no updated designs that might meld him into the modern set.  He also appears to get wounded in the convention comic, which would account for the fact that he is not a major part of the story.

Check out some images below of the comic art, reflecting some of these things that I mentioned.  Looking forward to seeing more tomorrow!

A huge thanks to MadMac41 of  JoeBattleLines for the info and the picture assistance!  He came through big time.

What’s on Joe Mind Episode 59 is online now

It’s never a good thing when the podcast starts out with sordid JoeCon stories, but like it or not, that’s how we kicked off episode 59 and it only went downhill from there.  Chuck unleashes some punishment for the “Stump Chuck” segment from episode 58 and we talk to Don about the Crappy Figure Brigade and being a forum staffer for Toy News International.

There’s some great talk about the “good old days” of the online G.I. Joe fandom and of course plenty more news and G.I. Joe discussion.  Check out the embedded players below to listen, or hit up Podbean itself, and the Show Notes are after the jump.

IDW G.I. Joe Solicitations for September, 2012

IDW has just supplied us with solicitation information for G.I. Joe titles hitting comic shops in September!  I’ll tell you I’m extremely excited to see what’s going to happen in the Real American Hero universe based on what we’re seeing here, which features a fan favorite character… a couple of them, actually.

Also, even thought it’s not strictly G.I. Joe related, I was excited to see a Transformers: Art of Fall of Cybertron collection featuring art from the extremely cool video game series…not only that, but written by long time G.I. Joe scribe and personal friend of GeneralsJoes Mark Bellomo!  That should be a great item to check out come September.  Also in September begins the “G.I. Joe Complete Collection” series which endeavors to gather together all of the Marvel G.I. Joe issues into a series of comprehensive volumes!  That should be a fantastic collection to keep an eye out for as well.

Check out the Read the Rest of this Entry link below to see the full blown solicitation list.
