Screenshots from IrateGamer review – Full Playable character list revealed?

Now that I’ve had a few more moments this morning, I’ve put together some screenshots of the Irategamer YouTube review, featuring some interesting images like Kamakura in the Reactive Armor, Scarlett during gameplay, and a picture of everyone’s headshot from the roster screens.  The more I look at those rosters, the more I think those are indeed all of the playable characters in the game.  We know there are four unlockable COBRA characters (Baroness, Destro, Firefly, and Storm Shadow), we know Shipwreck, Kamakura, Agent Helix, Sgt. Flash and Gung Ho are all characters playable in the game who don’t appear in the film.  Then, of course, there’s the normal cast of movie characters.

Anyway…the screenshots are below.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA info and mini-review from IrateGamer

YouTube video game reviewer IrateGamer got some hands on time with The Rise of COBRA at E3, and put together a nice mini-review.  Along with the review itself, he mentions that Firefly is an end boss for one of the levels, but does specify that we won’t get to battle against the Crimson Twins or Serpentor.  Most interestingly, he shows a quick clip of the roster selection interface, and amongst the characters that we already know about is “Backblast”, a fairly obscure Joe that apparently might have made the cut as a playable character.  We don’t know for sure, but he’s mixed in with a roster that includes many characters we know are playable.  The full list on the roster is:

  • Backblast
  • Agent Helix
  • Shipwreck
  • Beachhead
  • Kamakura
  • Sgt. Flash
  • Duke
  • Scarlett
  • Storm Shadow
  • Baroness
  • Firefly
  • Destro
  • Heavy Duty
  • Ripcord
  • Gung Ho

Obviously it remains to be seen if these are all acually playable characters, or if they’re just included with the unlockable “filecards” that have been mentioned.  Time will tell.  Check out the full review below, and thanks to HissTank.com forum member Imperial Serpentor for the info.

Detailed Information about EA Comic for G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA

ea_coverHuge thanks to Jeff Bohn who has supplied GeneralsJoes with some nicely detailed information about the 6-page Helix comic that comes with the upcoming Electronic Arts G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA video game.  The comic leads directly into the IDW Helix special edition, for sale in August.  The information is below:

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra: Helix Special EA Edition

Writer: Brian Reed
Artist: Joe Suitor

6 page comic

Hawk shows Duke video of Agent Helix, who has “Total Organic Battlefield Awareness.”  Hawk explains that she is missing, that Duke is to find her, and details some of her backstory…

Master practicioner of Capoeira, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Shuai Jiao, Kendo and Fencing.  Rumored to be able to master a fighting style after encountering it only once.  Fought in underground fights, battling to the death and walking away without a scratch.  Traits of savantism, but not autistic.  Can identify and solve complex physical calculations quickly.  “Everything she sees has a Data Set.  Miles left before a car will run out of gas, Ammo counts in the bad guys guns…”

Hawk thinks Cobra may have her.

  • 1 page advertisement for the Helix comic special (which continues the story).  Also mentions that you can be Agent Helix in the game.
  • 4 page fold out poster advertising the video game.
  • 2 page interview with game writer Brian Reed.  Mentions that Helix was created as a “gamer turned soldier”, which gets fleshed out in the Helix comic special.  Mainframe is in the video game as support, non-playable.
  • 2 page interview with Electronic Arts Senior Producer Matt Marsala.
  • 1 page picture of Scarlett.
  • Back cover is an advertisement for the video game (same as the fold out poster).

Thanks again to Jeff for this great information.  I’m really digging Helix’s backstory.  If nothing else, the film is opening up some nice new doors into the G.I. Joe mythos.

Hands on reaction to Rise of COBRA for Nintendo DS

Video game website Pocket Gamer got a chance to have some hands on the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA for Nintendo DS, and gives a report of their findings here.  The site reports, “It’s hard to say whether the game will appeal to people aside from the success of the film though. Everything was certainly functional, and playing three or so levels as Snake-Eyes – who turns invisible when you dodge – was fun. But in the way of such licences, your interest in buying and completing G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra looks likely to hinge on how popular the film is.”

Essentially much of the same feeling seems to exist with the DS version as with the console versions… licensed game with some limitations, but probably fun for the fans of the franchise.  Well, that’s me, so I’m still looking forward to it.
