IGN Previews Rise of COBRA video game with great new screenshots!

Hot on the heels of the GamePro Rise of COBRA preview, IGN.com has chimed in with their own preview for the upcoming video game coming out this summer.  Just like GamePro, IGN provides some great new screenshots.  In the screenshots below we see what looks to be Gung Ho has a playable character!  Not only that, but we see a picture of Duke and Gung Ho battling against one of COBRA’s ominous new SNAKE armor robots, just a small example of the very cool homages we’re going to see in the game.

The write up also mentions that the four COBRA “bosses” in the game will be unlockable characters as well.  The confirm for certain that Storm Shadow is one of them, and hypothesize that Destro, COBRA Commander, and the Baroness will be the other three.  They also reveal that G.I. Joe helicopter pilot Wild Bill has a cameo.

G.I. Joe Preview on GamePro.com w/ new Screen shots!

To coincide with this month’s release of GamePro, featuring heavy coverage on the G.I. Joe property, and specifically the upcoming Rise of COBRA video game, GamePro.com has posted a G.I. Joe Preview online as well.  Check out the article here.

Within the article there are some healthy tidbits of information…take the following quote for example:

“Playing in tight corridors and tunnels is great for characters like Scarlett,” according to lead designer Dax Berg, “while outdoor attacks from Flight Pods are best suited to guys like Flash.”

There’s been no mention of Flash as of yet, so this is a nice indication of another character choice available in the game.  Like much of the other coverage of the video game across the web, this article focuses on the fact that the gameplay is set up to be a quick, action-based, arcade type game with power ups, easy to use controls and lots of flash.  Another key quote:

“You’ll spend those Battlepoints to unlock new playable characters, over 12 in all, including Cobra villains who possess signature weapons and combat abilities. You’ll also buy classic Joe memorabilia, too, including 75 unique file cards (those vintage cardboard character bios you punched off the back of the action figures), more than 30 enemy memos and intel reports, and even a video archive of the classic 80s cartoon public service announcements. Not a bad haul for 80s pop culture addicts, and more may be on the way in the form of downloadable content — the studio is still “evaluating its options” regarding DLC, but themes and pics are likely at a minimum.”

G.I. Joe heroes?  COBRA villains?  Quick, arcade-like gameplay for multiple players?  Sounds like fun.  In talking with the folks at Toy Fair, too, I get the impression that they are working hard to integrate plenty of vintage homages, too, so I think there will be plenty to enjoy.  Not a deep, story-driven game, but probably a nice quick “pick up and play” for G.I. Joe fans.  Considering it’s the first G.I. Joe video game we’ve gotten in…oh…over fifteen years, I guess I’ll take what I can get.

Check the gallery below for a full bevy of screenshots as well, some of which have not yet been revealed.

Also posted on GamePro was the G.I. Joe Theater of War preview, which is mostly focused on the film.

GamePro’s April Issue heavily features G.I. Joe: Rise of COBRA game

cover_thumbThe word from  GamePro.com is that their April, 2o09 issue will feature a G.I. Joe devoted cover (click the image to the left to enlarge) and lots of in depth coverage (including exclusive screen shots) for the upcoming Next Gen G.I. Joe: Rise of COBRA video game.

I’ve supplied a gallery of the images in the story below, credit to GamePro.com and henry.gomez of HissTank.com for the story.

Also, make sure to check out my previous article about the upcoming video game for a ton of details about the gameplay, characters, and lots of little tidbits about the game as we get even closer to a Rise of COBRA extravaganza leading up to the film’s release August 7th.

The game is slated to be released July 27th, 2009, and if you want to read all of my articles in regards to the game, check on the Video Game category.

Another item of note (courtesy of a comment from ggpike) is the GamePro site mentions the following tidbit:

“Huge details about G.I. Joe the video game (which picks up after the events of the upcoming film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) are revealed for the first time including an in-depth look at playable characters, gameplay details, as well as information on the new G.I. Joe graphic novel and animated show.”

So it looks like we may be hearing something about Resolute in this new issue of GamePro as well.  Thanks to George for the heads up!
