G.I. Joe Convention 2013 Brochure is now online!

We’ve been waiting patiently…and here we go!  The Convention Brochure for the 2013 G.I. Joe Convention is now online!  And with the announcement of the Brochure, we now know some of the characters in the G.I. Joe “Nocturnal Fire” Convention Set.

And…  oh wow.  Ohhhh boy.  This is…  yeah.  I’m smiling right now.  Check out the snippet from the brochure below:

Nocturnal Fire

G.I. JOE: Night Force is a covert unit specializing in nighttime
surveillance and defensive operations. Each team member has
been selected for their enhanced skills, sophisticated hardware
and advanced technology to surprise and vanquish any enemy!

This fan favorite and highly requested team contains several
of the classic Night Force members and some new additions
available for the first time in the modern era 25A style.

Our special edition Nocturnal Fire squad includes: Charbroil, Hit
& Run, Muskrat, Psyche-Out, Repeater and Spearhead with Max
(NEW Bobcat).

The Cobra Demolitions Team is ready to take on any obstacle
that gets in their path of destruction. Led by the mysterious Cobra
Mortal, he employs Cobra Letal and the deadly saboteur Crimson
Asp (NEW female character). Their specialized troopers include:
Cobra Frag-Vipers x 3, Cobra S.A.W.-Vipers x 3.”

Did everyone see that?  Did they see that?!?  HIT & RUN!!!  Woo hoo!!!!  By and large, I love what the Club does figure-design wise, and they’re doing my favorite G.I. Joe figure ever?  Sign me UP and let the speculation begin…  could this possibly be the Concept Case 30th Anniversary Hit & Run we were all drooling over last year?  Or was all of that drool mine?

Repeater??  Psyche Out!?  Muskrat and Charbroil?  Awwww, hell yeah…  these are all awesome characters, and yeah, while I’m sure many fans are hoping to get them in “normal” uniforms eventually, most of them look pretty boss in their Night Force togs as well.  Good stuff.  Not to mention a brand new Crimson ASP female character, Frag-Vipers AND SAW Vipers!?  Cobra Letal is the logical choice to lead the Frag-Viper team as well.  As for Cobra Mortal, interesting choice.  Let’s see how they pretty him up for the modern era.

Hit up GIJoeCon.com to keep up with the latest intel and the Convention Brochure with full details can be found right here.

I’m gonna be smiling for the next 2 months.  Bring on April!

Latest JDSO podcast dives deep into the toy industry with G Wayne Miller

JoeDeClassified SpecOps has posted a new episode of their excellent podcast, and this time brought in the services of none other than G. Wayne Miller.  For the uninitiated, G. Wayne Miller spent some time with both Hasbro and Mattel in the 90’s and wrote about the events in that time period in the fantastic book Toy Wars.  This is a must read book for toy fans in general and for G.I. Joe fans specifically as the book tells the story of Hasbro’s absorption of Kenner, an attempted buy out by Mattel, and the “evolution” of G.I. Joe from military toyline to the super hero-esque G.I. Joe Extreme.

It’s a fantastic read, and hearing Mr. Miller talk about his time in the industry on the podcast was equally entertaining.  This is something that every fan should listen to.

Hit up the episode right here, and check out JoeDeclassified.com for the images to go along with the story.

Second assortment of Figure Subscription Service figures are arriving!

HissTank member Raginspoon, who was the first to receive his wave 1 FSS figures, as reported that his SPOILER ALERT second series has now arrived SPOILER ALERT.  Granted, you’re not going to want to click that link unless you want to be spoiled as to who the next figures are.

At this point, I’m not going to spoil the news…I’ll talk about them in a week or so after they’ve started distributing more evenly throughout the world.

Discount store repaints hit eBay, and another hidden homage?

In a clear sign that these discount store G.I. Joe figure repaints are likely on the way to retail stores, eBay seller viperkingdom has posted them all up on eBay.  This second wave is full of some great homages to the classic Joes…some obvious, some not so much:

Now most folks have identified some of the clear inspiration for these figures.  Cobra Commander is based on his comic deco, while Storm Shadow uses T’Ginzu from Ninja Force as his base.  Duke’s interesting uniform color pulls inspiration from the animated Sunbow Breaker.

Shipwreck looks like a great OG13 base, and Snake Eyes looks to be based on the unheralded and extremely underrated Toys “R” Us Heavy Assault Set 6-Pack version from the new sculpt era.  But perhaps the most interesting here (and maybe the most overlooked) is the Cobra Trooper.

Many folks have identified the Cobra Trooper as having a comic inspiration, with the light blue and tan.  But it goes beyond that, at least from my view.  I’m sure folks remember those animated commercials way back in the day.  Well, the Cobra Troopers in those animated commercials look exactly like these figures, all the way to the blue mask.  It’s a very obscure and really neat homage for Joe fans who are interested in that type of thing.

I’ve mirrored the original gallery of images courtesy of Gyre-Viper from JoeDeClassified, and I’ve also included some low res images from those old school commercials.  I think the inspiration is clear.  Very cool stuff.

And below some very low resolution screen shots of those animated Cobra Troopers…notice the blue masks, blue gloves, and yellow straps?  Pretty cool.

It’s a Christmas Miracle! What’s on Joe Mind Episode 70 is online

And in the true Spirit of Christmas, join us while we talk about female body parts for a couple of hours…

In all seriousness, this was a homecoming of sorts as we all got back together to do a real live episode for the first time in well over a month, and we had a ton of news to cover!  If that’s not all, the rest of the crew (alongside YoJoe guru Terry Dizard) spoke with Bill Ratner, the voice of Flint in the Sunbow animated series.

Make sure you don’t miss me and Chuck throwing down about Michael Bay and the Transformers franchise…  it’s one for the ages!
