G.I. Joe: Rise of COBRA video game details confirmed

As we lead up to Toy Fair 2009, more details are starting to emerge about where the G.I. Joe license is going in 2009 and what to expect from the movie-related merchandise. Businesswire.com chips in with a healthy amount of details regarding the upcoming Electronic Arts video game.

The game plans to hit release to coincide with the film’s debut on August 7th,  and will drop for all major video game systems (X-Box 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, and Nintendo DS).  According to the Businesswire.com article:

“…2009 is gearing up to become another watershed milestone in the timeless franchise by introducing even more new ways to engage, immerse and play within the G.I. JOE® universe. The G.I. JOE® video game will feature an exclusive storyline that picks up where the live-action movie leaves off, allowing players to re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line. The game will feature 12 G.I. JOE® characters, each with unique abilities and weapons. Adding to the adrenaline rush will be an intense single-screen co-op mode allowing two players to easily unite as a team in a classic struggle between good and evil as they work together to defeat the powers of the COBRA organization.”

Sounds like the game is being designed to appeal to as many fanbases as possible.  Great news altogether, and a big thanks to Mercer from JoeBattleLines for the heads up!

New Movie Combat Heroes set on eBay

For fans of the kiddified “Combat Heroes” line, there was an overseas auction for an upcoming movie set, Ripcord vs. Destro (although the auction has already been won and the items are no longer for sale).

What is even more interesting is that the auction shows a picture of the back of the package, which reveals an interesting look for COBRA Commander (as well as Destro in his infamous metal mask).   I’m loving the Combat Heroes, but I’m loving the sneak peek into some movie designs even more.  I’m sure there will be a fair share of complaints about the movie look for COBRA Commander, but time will tell how it translates on screen.  A big thanks as always to cmdrinchief from the Coil Club for the intel.

Access Hollywood joins in the mainstream coverage with new figure reveals

Joining People.com and Wired.com, entertainment site AccessHollywood.com has posted an article revealing close up pictures of the upcoming Ripcord (Accelerator Suit) and Heavy Duty figures from the G.I. Joe: Rise of COBRA movie line.  They’ve also posted more official pictures of Hawk, Duke, and The Baroness.

Fans who detest the spring-loaded weapons have nothing to fear as it looks like each figure comes with a nice allotment of more standard weaponry as well.  The figures are looking pretty nice overall!

A big thanks to backpack from The Terror Drome forums for this news!

So, how about those movie vehicles…

All right…as sad as it may sound, I’ve been reflecting on the movie vehicles, and on the fandom reaction to them, and figured I should toss in a more elaborate two cents than I did earlier this morning when the news broke.

It seems as if the vehicles are taking a page from the figures, with a mixture of existing and new tooling (though a lot more new than reused in this first run), and like the figures, the results are a little bit mixed.

JoeReloaded 5-Page preview for IDW G.I. Joe #2

Phil from JoeReloaded has posted up a 5-page preview for the second issue of G.I. Joe, hitting Comic Shops tomorrow!

Check it out here.

Honestly, not a whole lot to get excited about.  Mostly tech speak, no-name troops, although the B.E.T. cameo is an interesting touch.  😉  Hopefully the rest of the issue picks up a bit, but it’s always interesting to see the tech behind the scenes.
