Okay, I have a confession to make. I love these Resolute toys. I really, really, REALLY love these Resolute toys. I know everyone labels me a Hasbro fanboy anyway, so that probably comes as no surprise to anyone, but my love for these Resolute toys goes beyond my normal love for the normal cool toys.
While I am fired up for the Pursuit of Cobra items and I love what I’m seeing there, too, for some reason the look and feel of G.I. Joe: Resolute just has me on cloud nine. It’s a little bitter sweet, because I’m not sure we’ll ever see anything else from this awesome Resolute universe, but if this is it, it’s a great last stand.
Granted, there were aspects of the Resolute story that certainly were not perfect, but the big drawing point were the designs, and seeing those designs translated into 3 3/4″ plastic form is absolutely awesome. So, of course, since I’m so ramped up, I couldn’t just stop at two reviews posted today… here are FOUR more. These are all linked at the G.I. A scant twenty-three years after it’s initial broadcast, the infamous G.I. Joe: The Movie hits retail shelves today on Blu-Ray or DVD. Produced by Shout! Factory, the movie finally rounds off the long awaited process many fans have gone through waiting for the entire collection of Sunbow features to be released to mass retail on DVD.
The ’87 animated movie will forever be a point of contention and talking point among the G.I. Joe fandom, so don’t miss your chance to own this DVD today.
GeneralsJoes will be reviewing this in its entirety very shortly, but trust me when I say it’s worth a look. It holds up surprisingly well over two decades after it initially aired. Granted, I thought it was pretty damn cheesy back then, and these days I’ve learned to better appreciate the finer arts of Sunbow ham, but I still don’t think you’ll be disappointed. GeneralsJoes commenter Nas made the trip to San Diego and was nice enough to bring some little tidbits back with him to share on the site!
First of all, he had a chance to talk with Mike Costa, writer of the amazing G.I. Joe: Cobra series, and here are some cool little bits of info he had to share.
- Originally, his story focused more on the military aspects of Cobra, as opposed to the financial side. As such, he’d intended to have Major Bludd be the primary antagonist, with a surprise reveal of Zartan towards the end!
- However, Major Bludd was on an early “don’t use” list, so editor Andy Schmidt suggested using Tomax and Xamot. Mr. Costa was very clear with me, however, that he never felt stifled by the “don’t use” list from Hasbro, and in fact had nothing but nice things to say in regards to the feedback he received as his comic got edgier and more intense. In fact, when he decided who he wanted to kill off in the book, the character was on the “don’t use” list, but Hasbro complied, based on Costa’s reasoning (My observation- And clearly, how his story was going.)
- When Cobra wrapped, he was asked to continue the story, but wasn’t sure where it could go without it being a rehash. After talking with Andy Schmidt and Chuck Dixon about the direction the series as a whole was heading, Mike felt confident that he could do a quality story, and said we’ll see the two books (GI Joe main series and Cobra) coming together nicely as the third arc wraps.
- He was never a hardcore fan of GI Joe. He had the toys in the house, since his younger brother collected them, but Mike was more of a Transformers fan! He actually credits his lack of fandom to his ability to write a story with no compromises, especially as he’s getting into the Transformers story he’s writing for IDW, and has to struggle more about being precious with the characters.
- I mentioned the awesome and scary takes on Crystal Ball and Croc Master, and how CB looks a lot like Alan Moore. He laughed, and said his intention was to have him look like Rasputin. (My observation- artist Antonio Fuso took that where he wanted it to go, apparently!) But, Alan Moore looks like Rasputin, so there you have it!
Another very cool little part of the SDCC experience was that Nas had a chance, with his son, to become official employees of Cobra Industries! As an added bonus, they get their own name badges… this is BAD ASS. I NEED one of these for myself! Awesome. Check out the images below.

Hey everyone, Gary here with a rare post. Which I am sure will be a hot topic of discussion for today and into the short term future (most Joe fans have short attention spans), dozens and dozens of the online Joe fandom who camped out HTS found that Slaughter is a hot commodity – the HARD way. At approximately 11:30a EST, the good sarge popped up on HTS and went from IN STOCK to OUT OF STOCK about as quick as it took you to read this sentence. While other Hasbro SDCC items flux between the two states, Sarge’s status has remained unchanged since. Yes, there are no Sarges today…

JoeDios administrator Hammerfel has posted an update on his site with some more words of wisdom from G.I. Joe uber-designer John Warden, whom he had a chance to talk with at SDCC this past weekend. The conversation centers mostly on the Pursuit of Cobra HISS v.5 with some great insight from one of the guys who was behind it’s design!
One of the more interesting snippets is the following:
“One of the things he asked me to pass on to the Joe Community is that he has been watching the reaction to the color of the current HISS tank and wanted to assure us all that future releases of that mold will come in classic BLACK(and I would guess other colors as well). He was eager to get the word out, so spread it far and wide!”

With the Canadian JoeCon coming up shortly, the exclusive figures are finally getting revealed! The first figure shown in this year’s set is Cobra Sky-Tech Trooper, “Snake Byte”!
A fantastic combination of parts, this character is an integral part of the Canadian JoeCon universe, who’s background will be fully explored in the exclusive comic book. He’s a great looking figure that blends very well with other Canadian Cobra figures that we’ve gotten so far.

I originally typed up these reviews to be shown in the JoeCanuck newsletter, and they were from January – April of 2010. However, as the SDCC wraps up, and as the 2010 Canadian JoeCon is literally right around the corner, it seemed totally appropriate to reproduce this review on the site for my GeneralsJoes Review-A-Rama.
