Thanks to a reminder from Fred over at JoeBattleLines, Shout! Factory has posted some great details about the upcoming Sunbow Season 1, Part 1 DVD box set that’s currently in the pipeline. This information came through TVShowsonDVD.com as well, and reports the following excellent news:
Shout! Factory has revealed a new “beauty shot” picture of their packaging – including the discs, disc case, outer slipcover and bonus rub-on tatoos – for their upcoming release of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Season 1.1 on DVD. This item will be available at general retail starting July 21st<
Around the same time, Shout! will also be making a <G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – The Complete Series available in a special “footlocker”-style package, but it will only be available for sale initially at the San Diego Comic Con (July 23-26), and then exclusively online at a secure website (the details of which have yet to be revealed). After an undetermined amount of time, the Complete Series set will then be made available in stores.
In the meantime, the coolness factor of these releases has gone up even further, with word from the DVD producer at Shout!’s message boards that he is painstakingly trying to make every effort to deliver the original broadcast versions of every Sunbow-produced episode, where at all possible. And Shout!’s disc-by-disc “track” listing for the Season 1.1 set has been revealed at their official consumer site, including interesting new details about the bonus material. Here’s that list, followed by the new shot of the package:

Oh. My. God.
Yeah… if this is what’s going to happen every time I take a day off to actually get some work done, I’m going to take a whole lot more days off! Good grief, the floodgates opened. I’m not even sure where to start.
First and foremost, Asia blew the doors open with a sudden outpouring of photographs of figures never seen before. Pretty ironic that we got some Wal-Mart listings yesterday, and now all of a sudden these pictures all start flying over the Pacific. Whatever the reasoning is, there are a ton of great pics of great new product at a bunch of different places. You enterpising Joe fans that you are have probably checked them out already, but here are the links anyway:
- HissTank.com (Resolute Roadblock, Destro, and Wild Bill)
- The TerrorDrome (A whole lot more including the aforementioned ones, plus a bunch of figures from apparent Wal-Mart 2-packs and vehicle drivers)
- HissTank.com (the same pic batch as the TerrorDrome ones above)

According to this article on HomeMediaMagazine.com, Shout! Factory is planning to debut the complete season sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe at San Diego ComicCon, running July 23-26, 2009. The sets will then be available for sale online right afterwards, before hitting mass retail.
The article states “Shout! Factory sources indicated the “G.I. Joe” complete-series boxed set will come in a foot-locker package, and will include only the episodes animated by Sunbow Productions (a different studio produced episodes that take place after the animated movie).”

CoilClub member Teletran has been keeping close watch on a thread over on the Shout! Factory forums, and Brian Ward, the producer and manager of the DVD production has started an official G.I. Joe thread here. This is his initial post about the subject:
“There isn’t much I can say that’s different here, although I will say that the original masters looked considerably better than those of Transformers. And, unlike Rhino, we will be completing the series. In one fell swoop, in fact. No, I can’t go into even the vaguest of details about when, but I can say “soon.” We’re already working up a press release, so it’s THAT soon.
We will have featurettes, like the ones on Transformers. We will have the designers, the producers, the writers, the voice cast, PSAs, toy commercials and more. As soon as I’m allowed, I’ll go into more detail.
Oh, and to answer the questions about running times and how many episodes, etc… We are not moving into the DiC Entertainment years, only Sunbow. We have a pretty good relationship with the company once known as DiC, but have no real relationship with Cookie Jar, so it’s not really as simple as giving ’em a call. Doesn’t mean it’ll never happen. But it does mean that the DiC incarnation of the series will not be included in our complete series set, nor will we be working on those season sets anytime soon.
In addition, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Season 1.1 will include both original miniseries.
I’m really excited to be putting this set together. As I said in the Transformers thread, these two series WERE my childhood. So to be able to produce these sets is pretty special. And I’m gonna need a LONG vacation afterward…”
It sounds like we’re in for a treat with these DVD sets, and that we may be getting that treat a lot sooner than we anticipated. Great news, and a big thanks to Teletran for digging this gem up!

TVShowsonDVD has debuted a possible picture of the cover art for the upcoming Shout! Factory Season 1 part 1 DVD set being released this summer to coincide with the theatrical release of G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA.
More important than even that, though, is an article from homemediamagazine.com who spoke with Garson Foos, President of Shout! Factory. One quote in particular should make folks pretty happy:
“Foos said Shout! Factory would follow the release with special complete-series sets of “The Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” later this summer. In the case of “G.I. Joe,” Rhino lost the rights before completing its release slate, which means many of the episodes will finally be released for the first time.”
So, it sounds like we may not have to hunt down several different half-season sets. Very cool.
