I figure there are lots of folks probably doing the whole “Best of” lists for 2011 (myself included eventually!) so I figured I’d take a somewhat different approach. Rather than considering only the “best” or “worst” I figured I’d take a look at significance. And because I’m wishy washy, I couldn’t narrow it down to just 10, I had to sneak an 11th in there just for discussion purposes.

Okay, time for me to be honest. I really don’t give a crap about zombie stories. Interestingly, I did find myself captivated by The Walking Dead, but I think that was more character and story driven rather than specifically zombie driven.
When IDW announced they were doing a mega cross-over event featuring zombies, I really wasn’t all that enthralled. When they claimed it would all happen in continuity and somehow make sense…well, that got me at least a little bit interested.
So now we’ve gotten Infestation #1, and now G.I. Joe: Infestation #1. How are the end results?

IDW’s Infestation event continues here in this bi-weekly two-part G.I. Joe tale! A robotic arm of unknown origin has been discovered and both the JOEs and COBRA race to discover its secrets. Little do the two sides know that the arm has its own agenda- assimilating the world’s military technology into the Infestation fold! A secret underwater COBRA base full of B.A.T.S. sounds like the perfect place to start!

So last month when I reviewed Issue #26, I praised the art and the overall story, but was disappointed that this particular story was put where it was. A cool and fun tale, but it didn’t serve well as the culminating issue of a two-year long story arc.
I agreed to give Dixon one more chance to surprise me, and with Issue #27 hitting this week, it’s time to say whether he pulled it off.

This is it…the final issue in the so-called “Season One” arc of the mainstream G.I. Joe title from IDW. It’s been a roller coaster ride, through various ups and downs, and I’ll be the first to say that issue #26 was one of the downs. The story itself was exciting, the art was great, but it felt a bit like wasted potential for all of this build up to feature essentially the two character we know and feel the least about. We’ll see if Chuck Dixon can make amends with issue #27 tomorrow. Check out the 5-Page preview below.
G.I. JOE #27
Chuck Dixon (w) • Robert Atkins (a & c)
“M.A.S.S. DESTRUCTION” concludes here with Snake Eyes and Helix stranded at the top of the world in a desperate battle against time, the elements and COBRA. Expect an armored vehicle battle on the frozen wastes of an Arctic wasteland like you’ve never seen before. And a chilling shock ending you never thought you’d see!
