Interview with Stephen Sommers in August issue of Sci Fi Magazine

Apparently the August issue of Sci Fi Magazine had an interview with G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA director Stephen Sommers regarding the making of the film, the tone, etc…  xhairs was kind enough to transcribe the entire interview, and it’s presented below.

A HUGE thanks to xhairs for going through all of this trouble!

WAR IS HELL

DIRECTOR STEPHEN SOMMERS BRINGS CLASSIC G.I. JOE CHARACTERS TO LIFE IN AN ACTION-PACKED ORIGIN FILM.

BY DAVID GROVE

The battle between G.I. Joe and the mysterious Cobra organization is taking place just southeast of Los Angeles. The whole area is littered with armored vehicles, caverns, explosions, rocket launchers, secret laboratories, and even a couple of manned submarines. What’s strange is that the entire scene is completely bloodless. There are no dead bodies and all of the people who are walking around the scene seem to be having a good time…

Images of upcoming exclusives emerge…

As SanDiego ComicCon grows closer more and more secrets continue to be uncovered prior to the “official” reveal…  this time credit The Terror Drome for uncovering some pictures of the upcoming Toys “R” Us Exclusive “Attack on the Pit”, Target Exclusive “Rescue Mission”, and the Target Exclusive “Past and Present” boxed set, which is a new one to us.

Attack on the Pit is a very nice looking set featuring Duke, Ripcord, Pit Commando, a Neo-Viper repaint and a Neo-Viper Officer, who looks awesome in the MARS Officer webgear!

We’d already knew about the Rescue Mission 4-Pack, but we get some additional pictures here of the set, which includes Snake Eyes, Duke, and two Neo-Viper repaints.

Lastly, a previous rumored set, but with no details, we get some pictures and details of the “Past and Present” set which apparently is a two pack of Snow Jobs with two Rockslides, one new one, and one what looks to be the Polar Battle Bear from the vintage days.

I gotta say, seeing all of these Neo-Vipers scattered in all of these various sets, the figure is really growing on me…and it appears even if you just buy a few exclusives this year you’ll get yourself a nice little squad!  Thanks again to HissCommander of The Terror Drome for the info.

So you want to know about G.I. Joe books? As usual, YoJoe is the place to go.

With big thanks to antarctica from the GeneralsJoes comments, I was remiss and have made several mentions about various G.I. Joe books in past articles without even thinking to check out what YoJoe has to say on the subject.  Well, as usual, YoJoe has a LOT to say.

Josh Eggebeen has put his blood, sweat, and tears into the book archive at YoJoe, and currently has information on pretty much every one of the Rise of COBRA books out there, from the novelizations to the kid’s books and everything in between.  I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned it yet, so I’m doing it now.  Hit up the YoJoe Book Archive to check out all the books and get a lot of information about them as well.

Some bad ass new pictures from G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA

JoeBattleLines member warmachinex has somehow stumbled upon a trio of new images from G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA, and I’m loving them!  Scarlett is shown in some form in each one, but it’s the second picture with the group shot that looks very cool.  The Reactive Armor is really growing on me, and the production values just look a hell of a lot more big budget in these shots than we’ve seen before.  Click here to visit the original thread, I have (of course) mirrored the images here as well.

Absolutely awesome images.  Hopefully some more start coming down the pipeline as we get closer to August.

G.I. Joe Confidential Files Paperback book released

confidential_filesHissTank forum member SnakeEyes2184 picked up a copy of the G.I. Joe Confidential Files based on the upcoming Rise of COBRA motion picture, and has a lot of details to share about the book.

You can check the run down right here, but there are some spoilers.  From what I’ve read in that thread, this accentuates the novel nicely and adds some cool detail to stuff we didn’t know.  Snake Eyes is no longer French, Scarlett’s background is remarkably similar to her traditional background, etc…

Check it out here, and if you’re so inclined, Amazon.com has it listed at $10.18 as well.

More “shorts” from Alexx – COBRA Commander and Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes

JoeBattleLines member Alexx has been pumping out these quickie reviews and image series solid for the past week, and I can’t get enough of ’em.  The last one he did for Covert Operations Scarlett was especially painful, though, because he convinced me to buy a figure I otherwise wouldn’t have…  but this time around, he hasn’t convinced me of anything, because I was already in the camp with both of these figures.

Yeah, even COBRA Commander.

I know, I know…  this is NOT Cobra Commander.  No, it’s not.  This isn’t the Cobra Commander we’ve known off and on since 1982, but it IS the Cobra Commander for the Rise of COBRA universe, and that doesn’t make it any less legitimate.  The Rise of COBRA is a totally different world for G.I. Joe…and just because this doesn’t fit your mold for ole chrome dome doesn’t mean it’s a bad toy.  I mean, it doesn’t fit MY mold for Cobra Commander either, but the toy itself is still a whole lot of fun, in my mind.  A little on the Darth Vader side, but still fun.   Other fans must agree with me as well, as the figure has already sold out at Big Bad Toy Store, and I’ve seen many complaints on the forums about folks not being able to find him.  Check out the links and galleries hosted below.

That Covert Operations Scarlett? I think I’m sold…

Okay, I wasn’t going to grab the Covert Operations Scarlett…I have the Desert Ambush version in her Reactive Armor (with the MUCH better head) so I felt no reason to get the one in her cammie jammies…well, until I saw some of Alexx’s damn pictures.  He posted them in his usual spot on JoeBattleLines, and now I think I’m sold on this figure.

It’s not just the head swap either (though that definitely helps).  It’s the range of motion, the accessories…it’s all really nicely done, even for a fairly dull BDU clad figure.  I might just have to grab this one.

Nine new images from The Rise of COBRA? Not quite…but there is one.

Several online sites are reporting that Paramount has sent them nine new images from the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA, however that’s not really the case from what I’ve seen.  The images look mostly recycled, with really the only new one being of Snake Eyes vs. Storm Shadow sword-fighting.

Still, just for the sake of being certain, I’ve mirrored all of the “new” images below, courtesy of ComingSoon.net.

Tformers.com reports that IDW will be holding G.I. Joe/Transformers panel at SDCC

Fans of Transformers and G.I. Joe will be able to experience the two great tastes that taste great together all in one panel.  IDW has announced that they will be holding a “G.I. So does this mean that there will actually be a crossover comic happening?  Or are they just tying both properties together into one panel?  Time will tell…
