Some folks may consider this a spoiler, so I will preface this by saying continue reading if you want.  I don’t think it’s a significant spoiler, but it concerns the character of Firefly in the G.I. Joe: Retaliation film.  A recent issue of Total Film magazine featured an article on G.I. Joe: Retaliation.  They spoke with Jon Chu, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Ray Stevenson.  Comic Book Movie was kind enough to get this information out there and posted on their site.

No I don’t think this is a significant spoiler, but I know there are folks who want to go into this film clean and pure.  Let’s cover the discussion with Jon Chu and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura first.  Di Bonaventura was asked what separates G.I. Joe: Retaliation from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and this is what he had to say:

“Stephen Sommers is really successful at what he does, that’s a particular tone that he had and some people love it. I tend to gravitate towards a more reality-based feeling. When Jon M. Chu first came in, that was the first thin he said: ‘I gotta make it more reality-based.”

Tying into these comments a bit, director Jon Chu was also asked about his perspective on this new G.I. Joe film:

“We don’t have laser guns in this, we have physical fights. I wanted to make the G.I. Joe I dreamed of growing up, making it a little bit dirtier, feeling the scratches, feeling the punches. And also asking the question, ‘What does it mean to be a hero in this day and age?”

But in my mind, the real juice of the article was Ray Stevenson…and this is where we get some Sigma 6 connection.  In discussing the character of Firefly, Stevenson says:

“Firefly is ex-Joe, a pyrotechnics expert who decided it’d be more fun on the other side He’s kind of homicidal – it’s all a bit of a joke to him, blowing up cities.”

So… just like in Sigma 6, Firefly is an ex-G.I. Joe agent?  Very interesting…  I wonder what role (if any) this will play in the story of G.I. Joe: Retaliation?
