G.I. Joe: Rise of COBRA Destro review

Ever since Destro debuted on the Black Sheep Toy Store a few weeks ago, many US-based Joe fans have been getting this figure in their mailbox, and now I can count myself in that camp.  I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the figure and do up an impromptu review for those interested.

The character of Destro is indellible in the G.I. Joe mythos, and some might argue he is as important to the story, if not moreso, than COBRA Commander himself.  He brought a sense of honor and tradition to the super villain role, and successfully walked the line between soulless evil-doer and a man of integrity.  Some might say he actually walked that line a bit too well, for being a weapon supplier for terrorists.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA cast members awarded at ShoWest

For the past week we’ve been getting several reports of the sizzles and footage shown at ShoWest, and now, as the show wraps up, a couple of G.I. Joe’s stars received honors during the event.  Sienna Miller, starring as The Baroness, received the award for Supporting Actress of the Year, and had this to say:

“It was a strange experience,” she says of the commercial film, which includes myriad computer-generated effects she hasn’t yet seen. “I never had to duck in front of a green screen, pretending to dodge something that wasn’t there. But it is nice to get an award before the movie’s even out. I wonder if they’d do that with the Oscars. It takes the pressure off.”

Meanwhile, Dennis Quaid received his own award for Male Star of the Year, and will be appearing as General Hawk in the upcoming film.

Good to see G.I. Joe and its cast getting some mainstream publicity!  Click here to check out the article from USA Today about ShoWest and the awards.

More details about Rise of COBRA footage shown at ShoWest

SuperHeroHype is reporting that a more indepth look at the “Eiffel Tower” scene from G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA was shown during the Banquet and Awards ceremony which closed out ShoWest.  They have a fairly in depth run down of what happens in this scene:

“The scene begins with Miller’s The Baroness going up a glass elevator like we’ve seen in the teaser and Super Bowl spot. She arrives on a glass roof that she runs across, then we see Storm Shadow running down the hall toward the board room with the rocket launcher containing nanites (again as before), but this time one of the Joes in an accelerator suit–not quite sure if it was Duke or Ripcord–jumps towards Storm Shadow trying to stop him but the rocket gets fired as Storm Shadow gets knocked through the wall. The nanite-filled rocket hits the Eiffel Tower as before, and it starts eating away at the metal, but this time we see it in a much slower and longer process than any of the footage we’ve seen before. Storm Shadow jumps down to the roof below, while Channing Tatum’s Duke catches up to the Baroness on the roof, as she fires some sort of projectile weapon at him. He runs away as the weapon impacts on the glass roof, which shatters and sends him falling downwards before he grabs onto one of the supporting beams and pulls himself back up. The Baroness then runs towards the edge of the roof as a Cobra aircraft lands and she runs on board. Duke chases after her, then makes a leap off the edge of the roof, landing inside the craft with Baroness and Storm Shadow, and she tells him, “Congratulations, Duke, you just saved Paris… or at least most of it.” And then we’re back on the Eiffel Tower as the nanites have done enough damage that the entire thing starts toppling downwards.”
