G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer #3 – What did we learn, what’s new?

Initial reaction upon viewing the third theatrical trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation is that… there wasn’t a whole lot of new angles to this thing.  Of course, that’s expected.  We’ve already seen a few domestic and international trailers, and a few TV spots.  At this point it’s going to be tough to get new footage out there without starting to reveal key components of the story.

However, we did a few cool new snippets of action.

  1. The opening scene of Jinx and Snake Eyes walking across the mountain and hooking their grappling hook was something we hadn’t seen before.  We also know at this point that they are heading into a battle with Storm Shadow.  One assumes that they probably win this battle and that it’s Storm Shadow they are carrying in a glorified “body bag” as they swing away from the Red Ninja.
  2. Scenes with the ambush on G.I. Joe and the president are all taken from previous trailers, though they’re cut somewhat differently and more quick-paced, leading me to believe this trailer is more focused on action than plot exposition.
  3. We see a President with a sense of humor, poking some fun at North Korea, and the opening of the weaponized briefcase is a bit more elaborate than we’ve seen in previous footage.
  4. London’s destruction seems more developed and a bigger focus here as well, with several shots of the country exploding from various different angles.
  5. Fantastic scenes of Cobra invading domestic soil seem to be a bit longer as well, with an extra unfurl of the Cobra flag over the nation’s capital, and what feels like an extra second of the HISS Tank menacingly rolling down the street.  My eyes might be playing tricks on me, but it felt like these scenes were a bit longer here than in previous trailers.
  6. The Roadblock/Duke exchange about needing a new catch phrase kicks the music up a notch and we get a series of very well-cut scenes with some new footage.  Cobra Commander striding towards the camera is an excellent one, as is a great shot of the Cobra helicopter flying away from the camera with some thrusters in back.
  7. We see the Ripsaw tearing stuff up with rocket launchers, and SPOILER ALERT!!11! Cobra’s Mass Driver satellite gets nuked in orbit (it’s the only way to be sure).  These all feel like scenes that we have not witnessed previously.
  8. Trailer closes with some more Bruce Willis/Joe Colton wise cracking, but focusing on his retirement with some nice Lady Jaye/Colton head-bashing mixed in.

Overall I thought it was another great trailer.  I’m not sure if Jon Chu himself is directly involved in the editing of the trailers (I suspect he is) but if so, his background in dance choreography and action mixing with music helps immensely in selling these films.  Loved the music, loved the transitions, loved the chosen action sequences.  No this trailer did not give us a wealth of new insight about the film, but with some added footage and some tweaked editing, it was a really fun 1:44 of G.I. Joe, and it feels like it’s been way too long since we had that.  Check out the embedded trailer below, and a gallery of screen shots at the bottom.

Below are some screen caps…I do apologize, they are not of the best quality, but did reveal some neat details I hadn’t necessarily seen before.  Do with them what you will.

New G.I. Joe: Retaliation International Trailer?

Perhaps someone with keener eyes can tell me if this is truly a “new” trailer or not.  There are some bits I do not remember (specifically the words in between some scenes, and Firefly’s dialogue about hunting)… but it’s been a while.

Regardless, this trailer was posted just yesterday on YouTube and claims to be a new 2013 trailer.  There are not any major new sequences, but hey…  G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer!  GOOO!

Channing Tatum responds (as only Channing Tatum can) to rumors of more Duke

It seems like forever since we all expected G.I. Joe: Retaliation to hit theaters on Friday, and we celebrate this week with an Aint It Cool News interview with Channing Tatum.  A big rumor surrounding the delay of the film was that Tatum was going to be brought back to life considering his recent surge in popularity.

If Duke is indeed getting better from his rumored demise, it certainly seems like Tatum is the last to know.  Either that, or the production has enough existing footage to shoot around the events.  Aint it Cool News’ Capone spoke with Tatum about Magic Mike, and thankfully managed to squeak in some G.I. Joe questions among all the male stripper talk.

“Capone: Before I let you go, because I’ve got to ask, can you shed any light on what is going on with this G.I. JOE sequel right now?

CT: You know what? I would love to, and this is the honest answer, they haven’t talked to me about anything. I haven’t even seen the movie, so I don’t know anything.

Capone: I keep hearing they’re going to bring you back in to do some reshoots.

CT: They haven’t called me. Everybody sends me the Deadline reports, all of my friends and even my representation. They’re just kind of like, “Has anybody called you?” I’m like “No,” then they’re like “Well they haven’t called us.” So I don’t really know. I have no idea.

Capone: All right, well I had to ask.

[Both Laugh]

CT: We’ll see, though, very shortly I’m guessing.

Capone: They’ve got a lot of time to play with.

CT: Yeah, exactly. More than enough, right?

Capone: Yeah.

CT: Which is interesting. I’m intrigued to see what their plan is. [G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Producer] Lorenzo di Bonaventura, he’s also a producer on BITTER PILL. So I’m going to see him very shortly here, and I’m going to be like, “What’s up, dude?” [Laughs] “What’s the deal?”

Rumors have already been floating around out there that Channing Tatum had already come back for potential reshoots a number of months ago, and even more rumors suggested that multiple endings had been shown in test screenings, which may have partially resulted in the decision to delay the film.  My guess is yes, there will be plot tweaks to the film to remove Duke’s death, but it is also quite possible that no reshoots will be required on Tatum’s end.

Time will tell.  Check out the full interview on AICN, and thanks to Dolemite from HissTank.com for the information.

Channing Tatum talks (briefly) about rumors of more Duke in G.I. Joe: Retaliation

While Paramount’s official line remains that the G.I. Joe: Retaliation delay is due to a desire to convert the film to 3D, rumors still swirl that they’re also doing some reshoots and also trying to provide more Channing Tatum for the movie going audience.

While at the MTV Movie Awards last night, Tatum was approached by MTV and asked about the status of G.I. Joe: Retaliation and whether or not he would be participating in any reshoots.  His answer was pretty non-committal, saying he didn’t really know what was going on, and that he had done everything they had asked him to do.

Doesn’t sound much like someone who is still involved with the film, in my mind…or has the desire to promote it.  But we are still nine months out.

Also, don’t forget that there were rumors that people seeing the early screenings were being shown two endings, one with Tatum deceased, and one with him alive.  It’s possible they have already filmed all of the footage of him that they need and it’s all up to the editors now.  Check out the interview on MTV.com or also embedded below.
