I gotta be honest… I was stunned at the turn out for Round One of the Concept Case Survey. I’ve always suspected that the online G.I. Joe community was fairly small, and while we’re obviously vocal and enthusiastic, I had my doubts about how many folks would be motivated to sit through a 10 minute survey.
Turns out over 1100 of you were, and I’m very thankful for that. Truth is, the more folks that vote, the more impact the votes have, and if Hasbro sees the fandom taking the time to let their voices be heard, the more likely they are to take our input into consideration.
So, you all voted… you all saw the results of Round One…and now we’re off to Round Two! All of the selections from the various sections have been narrowed down to a single list of 20. It’s now up to the fans to take that list of 20 and tell Hasbro WHAT YOU WANT. Go for it!

Wow, I think it’s safe to say this episode was packed. We had a bunch of stuff to talk about, so we brought on The Mike from the Canadian JoeCon, the guys from the JoBurg Podcast, but we also really wanted to pay some close attention to the guys from Go Go Dynamo, who are behind The Hero Project and also were the lifeblood behind a little 8″ toy line you might have heard of… Sigma 6.
As many episodes of these podcasts that I’ve done, it surprises me that we can continue to talk to folks who I consider personal heroes. Wayne and Tuck from Go Go Dynamo are absolute revolutionaries in design and art, and I considered it a true privilege to talk to them for an hour or so. Cast whatever stones towards Sigma 6 that you might want to, but listening to their absolutely brilliant insight behind toy design, the G.I. Joe universe in 2005 and how that whole thing translates to The Hero Project was one of the most interesting and captivating 60 minutes I’ve ever spent on the show. Truly awesome stuff.
Please consider supporting The Hero Project on Kickstarter, and once you’re done, come on back and hit up our Podbean Page to listen to the latest episode, especially because we also talk a ton about the awesome Canadian JoeCon and keep the JoBurg guys up way past their bed time. Things get pretty wacky!

Well, I actually cheated a little bit and instead of closing down the Concept Case survey last night, I did it at about 5:30 am this morning. I was very pleased to see people were placing votes all the way until the end, as the last survey completed was at around 3:00am.
The response to this survey has been frankly overwhelming. Everyone has been very positive and very enthusiastic about the results and the potential for data gathering for Hasbro. While there is certainly no guarantees that anything here will impact any decisions Hasbro is going to make, they encouraged us at JoeCon to get whatever data we could, and G.I. Joe fans should be proud, you guys delivered!
There were nearly 1200 responses, which is quite impressive, and the fans have spoken. I am going to outline the winners of Round One below, and you will see a wealth of charts and graphs screen capped as well, just to prove the results weren’t skewed in any way.

There were also (obviously) results for the G.I. Joe: Renegades and vehicles as well, and I mirrored images of the survey results on those below. I figured the figures from the three main sections was the most important.
Now…where do we go from here? I think an important next step is to take the winners of each section and face them off against each other. They’ve all been compared within the confines of their own subline, but I think the next important step is to cull more wheat and refine the results even further.
For folks who have been following along…what would you rather see? The Top 5 from each section face off, or the Top 10? Would a Round two survey with 15 – 20 quick and easy choices be a better idea, or broadening the scope a bit? Leave me comments in the comment section with your choices.
Take a peek at the images below to get a great breakdown of each section of the poll, and most importantly THANK YOU ALL for your contributions. This has been a terrific community-building experience.

I’ve always said that the Concept Case Survey was designed to be site neutral, hosted on a third party site (SurveyMonkey) and designed to be used by anyone, regardless of their affiliation. But I did suspect that other sites would want to run their own surveys geared to their own membership, and that’s cool, too.
For those HissTank.com faithful, they’ve started rolling out “Concept Vault Madness” similar to their March Madness polls, where they pit certain figures against each other to try and pick a winner.
The way I see it, if we can pull data from many different sources for Hasbro to use, all the better. Take a look at HissTank.com’s Concept Vault Madness, but then also make sure you swing by the Concept Case Survey as well to make your voice heard loud and clear. 😉
If you are heading to HissTank for the Vault Madness, and need an image refresher, don’t forget the Identification Gallery. That might prove useful.

Just a reminder that the Concept Case Survey that has been available via SurveyMonkey will be closed on Monday July 23rd for the initial round results to be tabulated. I did post earlier this week that the survey would end today, but in rethinking that, I figured it might be good to have another weekend for folks to make their voices heard.
I’m surprised that the volume of responses has continued to come in pretty heavily. G.I. Joe fans are making their choices clear! Thank you!

Halfway through this Top 10 list, and I have a feeling things might get a little controversial. As if putting Data-Viper way back at #6 wasn’t bad enough, now I’m going to get under the skin of not only the Sigma 6 haters, but also the Rise of Cobra haters and the “Marlon Wayans as Ripcord” haters. It’s a three-for-one deal!
But really, my love and desire for this figure only have to do with one of those three things, and based on what I’ve heard from other fans, I don’t think my opinion is that dramatically different from many of yours.
5 – G.I. Joe: The Pursuit of Cobra Ripcord Sub-Arctic Diver
Yes, it’s another Ripcord figure. Yes, it’s from the earlier days of G.I. Joe: The Pursuit of Cobra, and really, it’s a guy in a scuba suit which means there isn’t a whole lot of use or extraneous detail to appeal to the general collector crowd. But for me, and I would think for other lovers of Sigma 6, it’s got something very important. It’s got a 4″ scale Sigma Suit. John Warden, who is currently the design maestro of the G.I. Joe line, also worked on Sigma 6, and based on conversations I’ve had and that I’ve read, he has a love for that property. With this Ripcord figure, he seemingly shared that love by giving him a straight up Sigma Suit, and I love it. Even though I strongly doubt that Hasbro would ever re-visit the Sigma 6 theme in a 4″ scale, giving collectors a good custom base to do it themselves makes a ton of sense, and I’m crushingly disappointed that it never went anywhere.
Sure, there are other options. Heck, many fans would argue that the Rise of Cobra Reactive Armor was more or less a Sigma Suit and could be used as such for customs. But the Ripcord was different. He had that unique texture where there wasn’t rubberized coating. He had those signature ports on his arms…this guy WAS Sigma 6 at a smaller scale, and the fact that he most likely will never be released is a true shame.
Based on what I’ve heard from other current Joe fans, I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks like this. Many folks seem to have the opinion that Sigma 6, done in a proper scale, would be a great addition to the current run of G.I. Joe. Many fans claim that the only issues they had with it was the fact that it was at an 8″ scale and that it went totally overboard into the animated styling. Regardless, though, it certainly seems as if we may not see this figure going forward, especially with all of his accessories going to the Night Landing raft, but I’ll still hold onto this dream. Go Sigma!
