The MTV Movie Blog had a very quick sitdown with Brendan Fraser recently, to follow up on rumors that production was moving forward on a sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. While the actor didn’t have any concrete information about the sequel, he did reveal that Gung Ho did not pass legal authorization at Paramount, and couldn’t appear in the original film for that reason. It’s unknown what the hold up was or why it couldn’t happen, but there you go.

I’m trying to dig up a little more info, but right now, all we really have to go on are a few Hollywood trade websites that claim Paramount has officially given a G.I. Joe Sequel the “Go” signal. The news is appearing in quite a few places, but I can’t find any links back to an official press release or actual announcement from Paramount, so leave this still in the possible category, I guess.
I mean, we all had an idea it was coming, and the screenwriters were revealed a few days ago, but to my knowledge, nothing official has yet been announced.
JoeCustoms members Jay and Chief have both posted sightings of the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Rip Attack Tiger Strike w/ Street-Viper and the Jetstorm Cycle w/ Snake Eyes at local stores (though there are no details as to which local stores they are). Justin: As 2010 drew nearer, I knew I wanted to do something to celebrate not only the past year in G.I. Joe, but something to celebrate the entire decade. The past ten years have added several series of generations in G.I. Joe lore, some better than others, but I thought it only right that I give some time to not only cheer what Hasbro did in 2009, but also everything it took to get there from G.I. Joe’s apparent mass-market resurgence in the year 2000.
But a strange thing happened as I began paring down the list… I had fifty figures. Yes, FIFTY. And it took me a while to pare it down even that much. Even for a raging fanboy like myself, 50 of the “best” figures of the past 10 years hardly seems like a “best of” list, and more like a “look at all these pretty decent figures” list. Even though nearly 1200 G.I. Collider first revealed this morning that they had heard that screenwriters had been inked for the upcoming follow up to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and now they have the name. Or the pair of names as the case may be.
Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have apparently signed on to write the inevitable G.I. Joe sequel, according to Collider.com. It’s a busy few days for the two writers as earlier in the week they were confirmed to be attached to the upcoming Deadpool feature film.
What does this mean for the G.I. Joe universe? Tough to say… Zombieland has been getting rave reviews for it’s effective blend of action, suspense, and comedy, and the duo was considered a perfect fit for the Deadpool project (even by notorious geek blog Topless Robot). How does that translate to the G.I. Joe universe? I actually think it could work exceedingly well. It would definitely seem, though, that Paramount is taking a different tact with the sequel, and while they may continue to try and merge the fantastical with the military, I think this is a step in the right direction, and we could be in for a fun ride…if nothing else, the writers at least, have some serious geek street cred.
Let’s hope this story rings true, and look forward to the next roller coaster ride. Yo Joe!
