Along with sneak peeks at all the upcoming toys for the G.I. Joe: Rise of COBRA movie, we also got a chance to take a look at the video game in production at Electronic Arts, and had some opportunity to talk to some of the folks working on the game. In those conversations, and in viewing the gameplay we uncovered a wealth of details about the upcoming production.

MTV.com got a chance to attend an early “first look” at the upcoming G.I. Joe video game being produced by Electronic Arts, and came back with decidedly mixed reviews. It would appear to be your run-of-the-mill licensed “Game of the Week”, but part of me thinks it’ll still be fun to blast at COBRA agents while controlling the familiar Joe characters. Not sure if I’ll buy or rent, but still looking forward to how it develops.

JoeBattleLines forum member WNightBlade reports here that he visited a “Preview Event” for Electronic Arts and saw some of the G.I. Joe video game first hand. According to his account, it is definitely third-person shooter, mostly arcade-like in nature, with fairly basic controls and unlockable costumes/characters. The level he was watching featured Snake Eyes and “Roadblock” (though it may have been Heavy Duty).
He was not wild about the end result, which if I’m not mistaken is to be expected with pretty much everyone in the fandom in regards to movie licensed games, especially ones produced by Electronic Arts. Regardless, I’m keeping an open mind until I get my own first hand account Saturday in New York, then we’ll see what I think.
A big thanks to WNightBlade for sharing his experience!

As I’ve been perusing different sites looking at various links to articles about the video game it occurrs to me that many of these articles are saying separate things about the game that others are not. Some have certain details that others don’t, and still others mention some things that I did not realize until I’d read the 4th or 5th press release on this thing. So all that being said, I figured I’d collect all the info in one easy-to-follow place, and maybe help folks get an idea what we’re looking forward to. Read on…

The official website is live as well!
Not much there yet, but I’m sure after the “First Look” at Toy Fair this weekend, things will ramp up.

As we lead up to Toy Fair 2009, more details are starting to emerge about where the G.I. Joe license is going in 2009 and what to expect from the movie-related merchandise. Businesswire.com chips in with a healthy amount of details regarding the upcoming Electronic Arts video game.
The game plans to hit release to coincide with the film’s debut on August 7th, and will drop for all major video game systems (X-Box 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, and Nintendo DS). According to the Businesswire.com article:
“…2009 is gearing up to become another watershed milestone in the timeless franchise by introducing even more new ways to engage, immerse and play within the G.I. JOE® universe. The G.I. JOE® video game will feature an exclusive storyline that picks up where the live-action movie leaves off, allowing players to re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line. The game will feature 12 G.I. JOE® characters, each with unique abilities and weapons. Adding to the adrenaline rush will be an intense single-screen co-op mode allowing two players to easily unite as a team in a classic struggle between good and evil as they work together to defeat the powers of the COBRA organization.”
Sounds like the game is being designed to appeal to as many fanbases as possible. Great news altogether, and a big thanks to Mercer from JoeBattleLines for the heads up!
