by generalsjoes | Jun 8, 2009 | G.I. Joe, Sigma 6 (8" Scale), Sigma 6 Celebration
Ever since the news broke in 2005, Sigma 6 has been a “dirty word” amongst the G.I. Joe fandom. With a different scale, and a different style, this toyline was sure to rise the ire of old school G.I. Joe fans everywhere. I’ve always stood behind the line, and still believe to this day that it was one of the greatest toylines that I have collected in my 27 year history of buying toys. If “A Real American Hero” is tops on the list, I would say that Sigma 6 may even come in second.
That all being said, with Toy Fair a few months ago, it had been four years since Sigma 6 was first “launched” at the familiar location in New York City. There were mixed emotions (well, not all that mixed, most of the reaction was abject hatred), and I’m hoping as we look backwards, we can appreciate the line for what it was at the time, and enjoy some content from the Sigma 6 days. Most of it has probably been seen somewhere, but I’m hoping collecting this all in one place might inspire some Sigma 6 fans to “come out of the closet” if you will. Each day will provide a different look at Sigma 6, and I’m hoping even the folks who weren’t fans of the property will still reap the benefits of this celebration and just enjoy some of the aspects of the line, even if it wasn’t your favorite scale or style.
For the first day, I want to focus on the Sigma 6 community, and the amazing creativity that went along with that. Even for such a short-lived toyline and cartoon series, it seemed to inspire a lot of fans to do customs, dioramas, general picture taking, and even crafting entire universes based on these 8″ action figures. For this first post, I’d like to focus on some of the folks who really took their love of Sigma 6 to the next level and produced some amazing customs and crafted some great stories for these characters. Please keep in mind there is so much terrific work in the Sigma 6 style that I cannot possibly hope to cover it all. I’m just providing a sampling of some folks, and please don’t think that if I don’t include you here that you haven’t provided a service to the community, I just wanted to do a general overlook of some of the creative energy that Sigma 6 spawned during it’s short, but sweet lifetime.
Whether it’s straight up photography, dio-stories, or amazing customizing, the Sigma 6 community has done it all, especially for a toyline that never really hit its stride. I want to take this chance to showcase some of the impressive work by fellow members of this small fraternity. Whether you like the Sigma stuff or not, certainly any Joe fan can appreciate the creativity behind some of this stuff. Click the link below to read the full article.

In the “perfect timing” department, on the eve of the week-long Sigma 6 Celebration, Destro from HissTank.com has posted some terrific shots of the unreleased 8″ scale Adventure Team Dusty!
While I’ve posted a handful of images below, there are a few more directly at the source. Thanks to Destro for getting those pics up, it’s a terrific way to jump start the Celebration tomorrow!

Terror Drome member Sparks received his recently released Wave 5 vehicles in the mail from SmallJoes, and did up a great review with some really nice images over on their site. I’ve also mirrored his fantastic images below. Some great looking vehicles, to be sure. Like the COBRA Island 7-Packs, there was a very good chance that these never saw the light of day, kudos to Hasbro for answering their fanbase and finding a way to get these out there. It would have been a real shame if they hadn’t made it.

Whoever said Sunday was a “day of rest” didn’t pass the word along to Cmderinchief, as he’s posted another nice gallery of an upcoming figure, this time the Defense of COBRA Island Alley-Viper. With some fantastic gear, two removable knives, and loads of detail, this is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of the Anniversary line. I’m thrilled that Hasbro found a way to get it released, and I cannot wait to see what else they might do with it going forward. Awesome figure.
Original thread is here, check out the images below.

To go alongside her Scottish Arms Dealer comrade, I have posted a full blown review with a bunch of images for the so-far unreleased Resolute Baroness figure. Her current release status is unknown, but hopefully somewhere, somehow, Hasbro will figure out how to work these figures into the line. Duke was great, COBRA Commander and the Trooper are fantastic, Destro is remarkable…the Baroness is… less so.

Cmderinchief from the Coil Club and JoeBattleLines has come through with a ton of new pictures of some upcoming Rise of COBRA items…we’ve seen them all before, but these new images shed some nice new light on the figure details.
Grand Slam – Apparently an upcoming Target Exclusive, which comes with an Air Assault Glider repaint first released during Spy Troops, Grand Slam comes with mostly Flash/Grand Slam parts, but with the new Steeler/Clutch lower legs (which the upcoming Zap also sports), the Ace head, and the HISS Driver belt. Gary’s mini review is on JBL here, and some images are mirrored below:

Frostbite – A repaint/minor kitbash from Arctic Snake Eyes and Beachhead’s head sculpt, this somewhat bland figure looks to come with the Ice Dagger, which is a blue repaint of the awesome Valor Vs. Venom Ice Saber. Gary’s thoughts can be read here.

General Hawk – The figure slated to come with the Pit playset looks to be a fairly accurate version of Quaid’s G.I. Joe leader from the film, and it’s sort of a shame that the only place he’ll be found is with a $100 playset. Gary gives a few thoughts here, and images are below as well.

Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes – Without a doubt the “coup de grace” of these figures that Gary is covering, this is one awesome looking Snake Eyes. I continue to be surprised that Hasbro can continue to make versions of Snake Eyes that still appeal. Between the Resolute version and this one, they are some high demand, very cool looking figures, yet are more versions of the same character that was already redundant 7 years ago. Gary’s write up is here and the great, detailed images are below.

Thanks as always to Gary for taking some precious weekend time and doing up a ton of these pictures. Some great info and detail there, and a big help for folks who are considering what to purchase when July rolls around.

Smokescreen over on one-18th.com has obtained a pre-production version of a mysterious “battle damaged” Storm Shadow, rumored to be “Arctic Assault”. It’s quite an interesting looking figure, with a torn tunic, slices throughout his torso and some very strange oversized gauntlets. Whatever the ultimate destination, the figure rocks, I can’t wait to pick it up on store shelves, in whatever capacity it comes. Check out the full review here, and take a peek at the images mirrored below.

by generalsjoes | Jun 5, 2009 | G.I. Joe, Sigma 6 (8" Scale)
I know there aren’t many Sigma 6 fans around, but I’m hoping those of you who don’t like that particular branch of the G.I. Joe mythos will still check out the “Celebration” running here on GeneralsJoes all next week! There will be custom showcases, artwork, images, cartoon information, interviews, etc… just lots of content based on everyone’s (not so) favorite eight inch toyline.
I totally understand why much of the fandom has issues with Sigma 6, but I loved it, and I wanted to take a week to show that even with the larger scale and the animated style, there was still stuff to love about it.
Starting Monday, June 8th, the Sigma 6 Celebration will run all week long (straight through til Sunday, June 13th). Of course there will still be an influx of other news and information for whatever you’re into, but for Sigma 6 fans (or even folks who want to read some interesting stuff, no matter what it’s based on) Monday should hopefully start a fun walk down memory lane. Hope you enjoy it!
