GeneralsJoes "Top 50" G.I. Joe figures of the decade

Last week, Mike and I posted a Top 15 list for the last decade, outlining our top 15 figures of the past ten years, and I let readers know that my initial list was actually a top FIFTY, but for obvious reasons, we pared it down simply because…well…a  top 50 list would have been long and probably insane.  But mostly just long.  But a few readers showed an interest in seeing the Top 50 list, so I’m going to post what I was originally starting.  I won’t go into gory details with each and every entry, though, and just leave it as a list, so folks don’t go homicidal halfway through it.

This is why a successful G.I. Joe movie is a GOOD thing

Like it or not, enjoy the film or not, this is indisputable proof that a successful film franchise for our favorite toy brand is a GOOD thing.  Behold the wonder of the Transformers: War for Cybertron video game trailer:

Like the G.I. Joe film, there are many Transformers purists who absolutely detest what Michael Bay has done to their characters and their toy brand, and many of them are totally validated in those opinions.  But I can assure 110% that without that multi billion dollar success of the Transformers brand, a video game like the one above would have NEVER been even considered.  I know we all have our issues with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (yes, even ME), but in the end, all I want is for the brand to be successful to the world at large, because great things can happen.
Can you imagine if a game like the one above was being considered for G.I. Joe?  Sure, the Rise of Cobra game was pretty bad by next gen standards, but so was the first Transformers movie game.  I understand that G.I. Joe will never reach the wide audience and acclaim of the Transformers brand, but here’s hoping there’s enough gas in the tank that we can get some decent film follow ups, and some cool tie in media and merchandise.

Channing Tatum and Dennis Quaid talk potential sequel to G.I. Joe

HitFix.com had a chance to sit down with Channing Tatum and Dennis Quaid during a recent press event, and inquired about the recent news of the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra sequel.  The most interesting comments from from Tatum, who acknowledges the fact that the first film was rushed due to the writer’s strike, and that having some time to work on a script and more cohesive screenplay can only be a good thing going forward.  Check out the video here, or also embedded below.

I gotta say, it’s pretty awesome hearing sequel news kicking into full gear…  love it.

No Gung Ho for Paramount G.I. Joe?

The MTV Movie Blog had a very quick sitdown with Brendan Fraser recently, to follow up on rumors that production was moving forward on a sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.  While the actor didn’t have any concrete information about the sequel, he did reveal that Gung Ho did not pass legal authorization at Paramount, and couldn’t appear in the original film for that reason.  It’s unknown what the hold up was or why it couldn’t happen, but there you go.
Check out the very quick interview below.

G.I. Joe Sequel officially announced… maybe?

I’m trying to dig up a little more info, but right now, all we really have to go on are a few Hollywood trade websites that claim Paramount has officially given a G.I. Joe Sequel the “Go” signal.  The news is appearing in quite a few places, but I can’t find any links back to an official press release or actual announcement from Paramount, so leave this still in the possible category, I guess.
I mean, we all had an idea it was coming, and the screenwriters were revealed a few days ago, but to my knowledge, nothing official has yet been announced.

GeneralsJoes "Top 15" figures of the Decade

Justin: As 2010 drew nearer, I knew I wanted to do something to celebrate not only the past year in G.I. Joe, but something to celebrate the entire decade.  The past ten years have added several series of generations in G.I. Joe lore, some better than others, but I thought it only right that I give some time to not only cheer what Hasbro did in 2009, but also everything it took to get there from G.I. Joe’s apparent mass-market resurgence in the year 2000.
But a strange thing happened as I began paring down the list…  I had fifty figures.  Yes, FIFTY.  And it took me a while to pare it down even that much.  Even for a raging fanboy like myself, 50 of the “best” figures of the past 10 years hardly seems like a “best of” list, and more like a “look at all these pretty decent figures” list.  Even though nearly 1200 G.I. Joe figures have been released in the past ten years, I wasn’t sure a “Top 50” would generate much discussion or thought…  click the “Read the Rest of this Story” link to peruse this monstrous volume!

What do Zombies and G.I. Joe have in common? Sequel screenwriters revealed?

Collider first revealed this morning that they had heard that screenwriters had been inked for the upcoming follow up to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and now they have the name.  Or the pair of names as the case may be.
Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have apparently signed on to write the inevitable G.I. Joe sequel, according to Collider.com.  It’s a busy few days for the two writers as earlier in the week they were confirmed to be attached to the upcoming Deadpool feature film.
What does this mean for the G.I. Joe universe?  Tough to say…  Zombieland has been getting rave reviews for it’s effective blend of action, suspense, and comedy, and the duo was considered a perfect fit for the Deadpool project (even by notorious geek blog Topless Robot).  How does that translate to the G.I. Joe universe?  I actually think it could work exceedingly well.  It would definitely seem, though, that Paramount is taking a different tact with the sequel, and while they may continue to try and merge the fantastical with the military, I think this is a step in the right direction, and we could be in for a fun ride…if nothing else, the writers at least, have some serious geek street cred.
Let’s hope this story rings true, and look forward to the next roller coaster ride.  Yo Joe!
