As G.I. Joe fans, we’ve been conditioned to think the sky is falling simply because for the past several years it seems like it’s been an immense struggle for the brand just to gain traction. But it’s very interesting to note some other films that have suffered a similar fate as the G.I. Joe sequel, and some of the names are big ones.
Films like Shutter Island and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince have been victimized by this same thing, and have gone on to be industry successes. But obviously a film like G.I. Joe: Retaliation doesn’t quite have the pedigree of those two films, with big names like Leonardo DiCaprio or Martin Scorcese attached, not to mention the billion dollar behemoth that is the Harry Potter franchise.
