Okay! It’s photo dump time! I’m sitting in Grand Central Station right now with my camera card chock full and ready to upload. I apologize for the lack of organization right off the bat, but I’m trying to get this done nice and quick-like so I can make a train back home. This is how things are laid out.

Spring, 2011 Assortments
As I create the SuperPage, I’ll break up the assortments into their waves, but for now, here’s what I’ve got for the spring assortments, including
– Cobra Commander
– Cobra Trooper
– Iron Grenadier
– Rock Viper
– Techno Viper
– General Hawk
– Steel Brigade
– Crazylegs
– Croc Master
These look to be a very nice mix of existing tooling with some nice new paint applications really bringing these figures to life. Some awesome use of some Pursuit of Cobra molds, the Jungle Assault Cobra Commander looks to be the base for Cobra Commander, and some terrific other paint jobs. Iron Grenadier is even sporting the unused Stedi-Cam from Destro. The Cobra Viper (using the Shock Trooper tooling) is pretty impressive as well. Images below.

Fall, 2011 Assortment “30 for 30”
A very interesting way to put it, Derryl DePriest referred to the Joe line starting in 2011 as a “30 for 30” line, meaning a plethora of figures from different eras and concepts in one single “rebranded” line. From the images, there is an obvious Pursuit of Cobra theme, which suits me perfectly fine.
He mentioned a smaller volume, but a much tighter “concentration” of fan favorites and well conceived figures, very similar to what we’ve seen this year. From my first hand perspective, these figures look fantastic. They have really merged the Renegades look with the realistic tooling to near perfection, especially with Firefly and Cobra Commander. Note the full mask!
This just comprises the first wave, hitting in August of 2011, so expect more reveals at JoeCon and SDCC.

Bravo Vehicles
We got no real details on waves for these, so I assume they might be hitting all at once. We’ve got a great crimson HISS with a re-conceived Elite-Viper driver. The VAMP Mark II has an absolutely fantastic looking “Steel Brigade Delta” figure. Didn’t get to see the pilot of the Black Dragon.

SDCC Zarana
Derryl admitted this was an “oopsie”. Zarana probably shouldn’t have been showcased, because she is NOT A DEFINITE FOR SDCC. They are still weighing their options to see if they can get both Zarana and the Starscream Skystriker. If not, the Skystriker will win out. If they can’t get Zarana for SDCC, she will ABSOLUTELY hit in the main line somewhere.

Skystriker
It looks gorgeous. Feels like it was pulled right from 1983. Awesome colors, black tail fins and some great detail. Not much else to say.

I get a really good feeling, looking at these toys. It’s quite clear that the G.I. Joe line is not their central priority this year (which makes sense, given Transformers 3, Captain America, Thor, and Clone Wars) but they are taking the resources they have and doing some amazing things with it. The Cobra Trooper, while a simple repaint, looks INSANE. Same with General Hawk and the Iron Grenadier. Holy crap they look cool up close and personal.
And the Renegades figures? I wasn’t sold at first with seeing them in a realistic style, but it really works. Firefly especially looks astoundingly cool.
So, in short, don’t expect huge volumes of product, but it sure looks like the Pursuit of Cobra mantra is alive and well, and the long time vintage fans are getting some serious bones thrown their way, too. Very, very good stuff.

THIS YEAR SUCKS!
Honest to god. Part of what made PoC great was the reimagining. Not giving us the same ARAH CC, Viper, and Cobra trooper. We’ve seen it. Half the figures are rehashes. Big deal Croc Master comes with a few more animals and blow torch comes with a mine. It looks like crap. Why would I buy the viper to replace the 25th one? If they did it in PoC “mech killer” style, then yes. But a ARAH rehash with different parts. HELL TO THE NAW! Rock Viper looks incredibly boring. Cobra Commander is no different than the comic pack one. He looks so inconsistent going from this 21st century cyborg to the friggin 80s look. If he had an alternate head, cool. But the mirror face has been done to death, same with the hood. Hawk looks like Hicks from Alien. You’ll modernize the greenshirt, but Cobra looks straight out of a Cyndi Lauper record. The 80s are gone.
The only upsides out of all of these are Techno viper(finally!), Hazard viper(love that mold), the new hisstank driver, and the Skystriker. The rest is beyond disappointing and I’ll be saving my money for “30 for 30” line. At least then we’ll get Sci Fi, Saw Viper, Heat viper, etc.
I’LL BE SAVING MY MONEY!
Maybe Hasbro should start rehashing the 90s. I mean Lady Gaga did it.
Is Brian Wilson underneath the GIANTS viper helmet?
There are new photos up of Sci Fi, Stalker, and Storm Shadow that were released from Hasbro. WOW. Those look amazing. Toynewsi has them up.
Thanks for covering this for us Justin.
Lots of exciting news!
Any word on the leftover vehicles from PoC – the two alphas (Ashiko w Cycle and HISS Drone) and the two mechs (arctic and desert)?
The Renegades figure assortment only includes five figures for the Spring? The Volcano Viper, Firefly, Cobra Commander, Duke and Snake Eyes? They have anime-looking eyes and Duke’s wrists look inflamed, but I did expect this to be a re-hash of people I already have an ultimate edition of.
The vehicle selection is both awesome, and disappointing. H.I.S.S. and V.A.M.P. are nothing I didn’t just buy, but those planes! Those planes are ALL I CARE ABOUT 🙂
Seriously, if the Sky Striker and Black Dragon are hard to find I will go insane.
I’m really happy with the way the Techno-Viper turned out. That looks really fine. Also, the standard COBRA Trooper, Viper and IG are great updates and EXACTLY what is needed to separate them from the 25th editions. Crazylegs, Zarana and General Soldier (Hawk?) are very eagerly awaited too. Not sure I like the Steel Brigade as much as the rest of you, and the Rock Viper looks to me like a Mountain Shockwave.
I’m confused at some of those choices and how much of them are reused or things I just bought from Ross or Marshals at DEEP discounts because retail had more than they could sell. I’m just a bit skeptical that all of these will see the light of day. I mean, there is a list on both my hands of all the cancelled 2010/11 goodies that I might just still have to look at those discount stores to find, leaving me to wonder (Queensryche que here) what’s next?
I hope those are just quick mock-ups because the new vehicle packaging looks pretty bad. It’s cool that the red, white, and blue logo is back and the figures will probably look alright since the bubble and figure will cover up all that white space but the vehicle boxes look pretty bootleg.
Black Dragon VTOL is a big disappointment if there’s no passenger space at all. I’ve seen people refer to this as the vehicle Destro and Scrap-Iron use in their first appearance but it’s actually the huge craft Baroness flys around in.
I don’t know about these Rock-Vipers. There’s no visible mustache.
I like the Iron Grenadier but I’m not crazy about the inverted Sigma 6 colors.
I really like the repurposed jungle Cobra Commander. Boots instead of wingtips really improves it. I’m sick of the perma-stripe on the helmet though. I always thought of that as lighting like Batman’s perma-shadow on his mask. It may always be present on the cartoon but I don’t want it on the toy.
