I remember it like it was yesterday… not only was my team playing the biggest game of the year, but G.I. Joe: Retaliation was poised to launch their huge Super Bowl TV spot, introducing the viewing public to the wonders of flying mountain ninjas.
This year, not so much.
Not only is my team not in the game, but from the sounds of Latino Review, G.I. Joe: Retaliation will not return to the big stage for a second go at an its marketing campaign. I’m not quite sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing yet. Actually, correct that. I know it’s not a good thing. But is it terrible?
We’ve already had over 12 months of G.I. Joe: Retaliation advertising blitz, is one more commercial during the Super Bowl going to provide any additional bang for the buck, or will it simply be a reminder to folks of what happened in early 2012?
I suppose time will tell what the affect is, but I almost wish Paramount was jumping back in with both barrels blasting instead of treading on eggshells hoping to not remind folks about the delay. Thanks again to Latino Review for the information.
Yeah… I have to wonder about the logic of this. The film debuts in March and I’m afraid it’ll get lost in the shuffle in terms of the perception of NON-Joe fans.
Thing is, it’s a densely packed schedule this year, albeit one without any massive Avengers / Dark Knight-like juggernaut. Man of Steel has TONS of question marks surrounding it, and that might be the biggest movie out there (I’m unsure if Iron Man 3 will prove to be worthwhile). And that’s without even thinking about stuff like the two “major movie star explores post-apocalyptic earth” movies we have coming out in the same year.
So a lot of companies are going to be splashing a lot of money trying to differentiate themselves from the pack. Paramount, fairly logically, thinks that there’s not much more they can do with a mass-audience trailer, especially this late in the game. And they’ve already used a LOT on the ad budget.
Basically, the money used on a Super Bowl ad would be better spent saturating the airwaves in the weekend before the release, espeically if they’re getting decent critical reviews.
I like those Iron Man movies but how many different types of armor can one person buy? I’m pretty sure those Man of Steel toys are going to be peg warmers.
I’m semi-convinced the small-scale DC movie toys are designed as loss leaders. I’m sure there’ll be a semi-decent movie masters line associated with the movie, though.
My local TRU had apparently recently re-stocked their Retaliation stuff… and it’s ALL Wave 1 stuff. Nothing but Dukes, Roadblocks, and Zartans to be seen.
Love the pic!
It’s disappointing but not surprising. After “Battleship” flopped spectacularly Paramount is still treating G.I. Joe like a bomb that could still blow up in their faces. They’ll advertise stuff like the new Star Trek film which is pretty much a sure thing, and keep G.I. Joe to the sidelines.
