JoeDeclassified drops a bombshell with cancelled Rise of Cobra barrage

You would think after three years we’d seen almost every canceled Rise of Cobra figure that was out there, but as usual, Gyre-Viper proves that thinking incorrect.  We’d heard rumors about these figures several times over the years, with the most solid information coming from package artist Mike Thompson, but for the first time ever, we are seeing plastic evidence of canceled Rise of Cobra figures Dr. Mindbender, Zap, and Budo.  Gyre-Viper also tosses in some more great images of Nano-B.A.T. while he’s at it, and to further prove the theory about these figures’ histories, Nano B.A.T. seems to come as part of the package with the other three figures.

Check out the very nice gallery of images at JoeDeClassified.com.  Dr. Mindbender is a very interesting looking addition, with the 25th Anniversary head sculpt and some great purple gloves as homage to the original.  Budo is mostly a Resolute Training Storm Shadow with what looks like the Hard Master head and the belt/ceremonial skirt from the Valor Vs. Venom Slice. Zap is obviously the most straight-forward update.

Rumors have persisted that these are part of a canceled second series of Wal-Mart Exclusive 2-packs, and Mike Thompson believed that was the case as well.  Check out a few of the mirrored images below, and look at all these great pictures at JoeDeClassified.com.  A huge thanks as always to Gyre-Viper for the pictures.

USA Today features first look at more IDW G.I. Joe details

With IDW’s reconfiguration of their slate of G.I. Joe titles next year, new writer Fred Van Lente has been making the rounds (including a written interview on GeneralsJoes and appearing on Episode 69 of What’s on Joe Mind).  Today, uber-geek Brian Truitt from USA Today posted a terrific look at the new upcoming IDW G.I. Joe title, with the first look at some exclusive cover art.

Along with Steve Kurth’s regular cover we see a spectacular variant cover by Arthur Adams as well as a great looking team shot by Jamal Igle.

We get some more great details about what life is like for this new G.I. Joe team and how the new events impact them.  There are more and more indications that Snake Eyes is at least taking a break from the spotlight here, which I think is a very bold and very cool move.

Check out the article at USA Today, and I’ve mirrored a couple of the variant covers below.  If you like the Baroness art by Arthur Adams, make sure to hit up his website and order the print!  It’s only ten bucks and it looks fantastic.

Big thanks as always to Brian Truitt for continuing to give G.I. Joe some high profile publicity.  Joe fans love ya, Brian.  Make sure you’re following him on Twitter for the latest geek news and intel from USA Today.

Some excellent exclusives left over from Assembly Required 2012

This past weekend, Iowa saw an influx of G.I. Joe fans with the Assembly Required convention…JoeDeClassified made the trip as well as Gary from What’s on Joe Mind.  By all reports it was a fantastic show with a great turn out, but what made this show really stand out were the exclusives.

While a lot of shows are putting a strong focus on toy-themed exclusives, Assembly Required went the artwork route and produced some fantastic minimalist prints, buttons, and very unique posters to represent the show.

These are some very high quality and gorgeous looking items, and with some of them left over from the show, they are now on sale via Codename: Iowa.  Check out the online store and pick up some of these very unique and interesting items.  These will not be produced again, so grab ’em while they’re hot!

A great Top 10 G.I. Joe vehicle list at Robots PJ’s

Over the years we’ve seen plenty of top 10 figure and top 10 vehicle lists, and it seems that in many cases we get pretty used to the choices that appear on those lists.  Items like the USS Flagg and the Skystriker are pretty standard fare on those lists.  While those are some very neat items, I don’t think they always capture the real spirit of what made G.I. Joe great.  Even back in the 80’s, the Real American Hero line was as much about Cobra’s wacky sci-fi tech as it was about the familiar jeeps, tanks, and fighter jets on the Joe side.

Long time G.I. Joe fan RobotsPJs put together a great top ten list of vehicles, and I am loving his choices.  Sure there are some familiar faces on there like the VAMP, but there are some other terrific out-of-the-box choices there as well.  Some entries that you might not expect, but will likely make you smile when you see them.

Check it out on RobotsPJs here.
