While we all agree that G.I. Joe: Retaliation is, at best, a “soft reboot” of the G.I. Joe motion picture franchise, it turns out that at least one star of the previous film seems to think that a full reboot might have been preferable. Over at HitFix, Drew McWeeny talks to Channing Tatum about the G.I. Joe: Retaliation and what his hopes are for the second film. It’s a short clip, but Tatum seems for the idea of a “full reboot”. Check out the video below.
Interesting. It’s a short video, but I think it speaks volumes. Channing Tatum wishes for a “cleaner” second film, and does not once deny what Drew McWeeny calls a “hand off” to a new cast of characters. I might be looking too much into it, but that sure sounds to me like he is moving on from the G.I. Joe franchise, and might confirm some of our questions the trailer brought up.
Interesting. Check out HitFix for the original source, and big thanks to GeneralsJoes reader Curtis for the heads up!
“I really wish they would have just rebooted it,” makes it seem like he didn’t want to be involved. Losing his starring role to Johnson, that’s understandable.
I agree totally. Kind of what leads to my thoughts of the whole transition to the next team. He doesn’t seem to be interested, his performance didn’t give audiences or directors much to latch on to. Time to move on, by the sounds of it.
The unfortunate thing is that I believe he could have made a much better Duke with tighter dialogue, no love triangle distraction, and a bit more attention to detail during the filmmaking process. I really don’t mind him as Duke in the first flick, but I think the new creative team had an opportunity to improve the character substantially. If your choices are either that or make the movie focus on Snake-Eyes and Dwayne Johnson, though, this direction makes sense.
Yes, Reboot it along with Transformers!
I liked the first movie honestly, but I admit there was some stuff that could have been done better (or not at all). But if a “reboot” (a word I’ve come to hate along with “Reimagining, and Remake) had to be done, I’d’ve preferred to see it done with the original cast intact. there was a lot of good talent in that picture, I don’t care what anybody says.
Besides, If you think your gonna turn Joe into something deep and meanigful by hiring the Rock and Bruce Willis… I just don’t see it.
It does sound like a lot of sore grapes judging by the undertone of what he said. Almost like when Marlon Waynes was a little upset that he wasn’t even asked back. On the other hand taking into account that there was a writer’s strike during that year maybe his reboot comment was just saying to the fans that maybe given a better script he might have given a better performance but with what was going on it just wasn’t there.
He’s got his male stripper film coming out the same day as G.I. Joe. He’s one of the leads, writer, and a producer on it. I wouldn’t expect him to be bigging up Joe 2 during any upcoming press junkets.
I don’t know. In context with his comments elsewear about the movie being more grounded in reality I think it’s possible he was taking a shot at RoC not Retaliation.
And, while I am not a Channing Tatum fan, I have to point out that RoC sucked in the same ways Sommers other films sucked so it’s hard for me to blame Tatum.
