Rulz over at HissTank.com is making quite the name for himself with all of his pre-production scores, and he’s come up with another one, this time the COBRA Surveillance Port with MARS Trooper and Tele-Viper.
I’m torn on this a bit… I’m actually not a huge fan of these mini-playsets, and I’m one of those grumbling guys who is ready to move on from the vintage homage stuff, but the Surveillance Port fits in nicely to the new universe. I actually like it an awful lot in this blue paint scheme…more than I thought I would. The figures, though? Eh, not so much. I wasn’t a big fan of the MARS Trooper initially, and he’s not doing anything more for me now. The Tele-Viper is all right, but that black and red paint scheme just doesn’t mesh real well. I do really like how Hasbro is integrating the vintage stuff with the more modern style, but that Tele-Viper just doesn’t have any real “flow”. It feels like a vintage head slapped on a new body, and not like a real cohesive new trooper. There’s some neat gear here (like the COBRA style laptop) and the Surveillance Port itself appeals, just not sure I’m sold on the whole package.
We’ll see.

Wish we could buy this without the butt-ugly figures. Would be cheaper and I wouldn’t have to put stuff up on E-Bay.
Although, IF they want to keep doing 25th stuff in the new line then why not give us something the guys collecting that would like, and the new fans would find cool as well, like the MORAY Hydrofoil, the Tomahawk and the MAMBA. I haven’t found a kid yet who doesn’t love them yet
It’s interesting that between this and the TRU Cobra 5-pack, you can basically get a second MARS Trooper 3-pack.
@ Jay: Or your first if you are me. I never found the MARS set at retail, and by the time I found out they were online only I lost interest completely. Time will tell as the next sets come along.
Count: Really? They shelfwarm up here in Montreal. Probably because for a value pack, they cost a few pennies more than three individual figures would.
I’m waiting for it to go on a good sale so I can get one. And I’d most likely get the 5-pack and the Battle Stations… if they’d actually sell them up here.
Some people complain about how the same identical figures show up in different packs, but I consider that a good thing because it makes army building a little more affordable, rather than having a differently-colored version you have to resist the urge to army build as well.
