Preview of IDW Publishing Free Comic Book Day Transformers vs G.I. Joe

Ever since it was first announced with Scioli at the helm, I’ve been fascinated by the prospect of this new Transformers vs. G.I. Joe series.  Scioli has a tremendously vintage artistic style, and judging by this preview, that style is infused throughout the entire story as well as the art.

The first issue apparently starts out with a bang, as G.I. Joe charges en masse into a Cobra compound, facing deadly creeper vines, Dr. Venom, and Major Bludd.  All after a cool sequence between Starscream and Bumblebee, of course.

It’s an interesting aesthetic.  I’m sure there will be some Joe fans who are a bit turned off by the distinctive look and feel, but I kinda love it.  It calls back to a simpler time, and I love that things are pretty wide open.  Once you see Snake Eyes in action, you’ll know what I mean.

Behind the scenes look at Tom Scioli’s Transformers and G.I. Joe

We’ve gotten our fair share of G.I. Joe and Transformers cross overs throughout the years from Marvel, Devils’ Due, and even Dreamwave, but to date we have not gotten the same thing yet from IDW Publishing.

This summer that all changes as Tom Scioli takes over writing (along with John Barber) and art duties for the upcoming Transformers and G.I. Joe limited series. By all accounts, though, this isn’t our typical crossover. Scioli says that this story doesn’t take place in any real existing continuities, but it sounds like it works as a story enough to fit where the reader wants it to fit.

But what’s truly unique about this upcoming series is Scioi’s fascinating take on the artwork. Using the 80’s aesthetic with some very cosmic style artwork, Scioli completely embraces the vintage look and feel, and I’m loving it. Newsrama interviewed Scioli about his process in accepting the job and working through the early stages.

Find the interview right here, and check out a couple of early images below.

Upcoming Transformers and G.I. Joe writer Scioli breaks down classic G.I. Joe comics

It was announced a short while ago that Tom Scioli, a long time comics writer and artist, would be tackling the first ever G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover from IDW Publishing.

To prepare for this event, Mr. Scioli has been doing copious amounts of research on the classic Marvel Comics G.I. Joe series, and he has written a fantastic long form essay over on Comics Alliance breaking down some of his thoughts and perspective from this research. It’s a great look back in time at some of the early events of the Marvel series, and refreshing to see someone embrace and appreciate the quality of the Marvel Comics series back in the day.

Check out Comics Alliance to see this great article, it’s an awesome read, and the fact that Mr. Scioli is going to this length makes me feel pretty great about the upcoming series.
