I’ve seen various places online talking about this G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA prequel novel written by Max Allen Collins, who also is writing the Rise of COBRA novelization. This creates a nice seamless writing style (for better or worse).
Above and Beyond is about 260 pages long and features Duke and Ripcord as the leaders of “Able Team” a special forces team that gets caught in the middle of a MARS Weapons deal with a South American country. There is military action galore, Ripcord is fairly obnoxious with his one-liners, but for the most part it was an enjoyable read. I was honestly very surprised at the level of violence in the book, with various soldier deaths described in disturbing layers of detail. It’s fairly apparent that this book was not meant for kids.
Throughout the whole book we follow along behind Able Team, who is also being shadowed by G.I. Joe’s “Alpha Team” consisting of Gung Ho, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Heavy Duty, and Breaker. Seeing Gung Ho used as the Team Leader was a pretty cool touch, and this actually really got me fired up for the whole launch of this movie “universe”. Gung Ho appearing in Above and Beyond as well as the Wal-Mart 2-Packs, then also tied into the video game all really started to make me realize how neat this whole interweaved universe is shaping up. I know everyone has their own issues and complaints with the movie, but to me, it’s an opening door to another fresh take, just like Sigma 6 was, or even the whole Spy Troops/Valor Vs. Venom storyline was. Don’t get me wrong, I love my old school Joe, but I’m always enamored with a fresh take as well.

Friend of GeneralsJoes J_Man from D & J Toys has kindly supplied some instructions for a G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA “totem” display meant to be used in movie theaters and for other promotional purposes. It appears to use the recent character posters in a very cool looking 5-sided cardboard display.
Check out the image below.

Courtesy of Broken Arrow and JediDefender.com, Alyosha has posted some nice reviews over on HissTank for the upcoming Wal-Mart exclusive 2-Packs featuring Gung Ho vs. Copperhead, Tunnel Rat vs. Monkeywrench, and Shockblast vs. Night Creeper. These are some awesome looking items, and should set aside the fears of many about classic themed stuff appearing in the Rise of COBRA line. Check out the images below.

This morning I began the monumental task of gathering together as much information as I can about the upcoming Rise of COBRA toy launch. My first objective was the single packs, and I’ve begun work on a “SuperPage” with links of my assumptions for the first few assortments of single pack figures coming down the pipe.
This information is unconfirmed. It was gleaned from numerous online sources and may or may not be accurate, but it’s my “best guess” based on what I’ve seen. From everything I’ve seen and heard, launch day should have Collections 1 & 2 released.
Check out the SuperPage here and PLEASE weigh in with your thoughts and opinions, additions, suggestions, etc. This is a work in progress, but I need your help.
Thanks!

Staffmember for The Terror Drome, CADPAT comes through with a trio of absolutely awesome reviews with a wealth of pictures from three upcoming figures that are honestly blowing me away. These are three perfect examples of just what Hasbro designers are capable of, especially with figures of somewhat non-desirable characters. They can take some generic concepts on screen and really make some amazing stuff.
First, he reviews the stellar looking Pit Commando, with a lot of images of various combinations of gear and looks. The base figure is Dusty from the Anniversary line (which is a great one…the only better one might have been Airborne). You can check out the review itself here, and the 30+ images are hosted below!

For a generic Joe army builder (something I really do not like) the Pit Commando is just phenomenal with all of the different gear and weapons that he comes with. This could have been a very forgettible figure of a non-character, but Hasbro manages to do something impressive with it.
Now, we’ve all seen lots of details about the Ripcord Accelerator Suit figure, but haven’t seen a whole lot with Duke. Well, CADPAT changes that as well. The review can be found in the same place on the Terror Drome, and the pictures are also hosted below.

Distaste for the Accelerator Suits across the fandom has been pretty universal, but I still love the idea (it ties right in with the Mega Marines, another concept I loved back in the day). But questionable concept or not, I find it tough to argue that this figure is incredible. Sure, he looks to share most of the same parts as Ripcord, but the color adjustments make a big difference, and just seeing the great poses that CADPAT put the figures in gave me a whole new appreciation for the looks of these figures. Lovin’ them even more.
Lastly, CADPAT takes a look at possibly the most controversial character in the film, The Doctor. I’ll try not to get into too many spoilers here, but let’s just say The Doctor plays a really pivotal role in the film, but I will admit, he looks a bit rediculous from what we’ve seen so far. However, Hasbro somehow takes this silly looking character and makes a figure that looks pretty kick ass. The review is in the same thread, with more images below.

Fantastic looking figure. I couldn’t care less about The Doctor from what I’ve heard so far, but this figure does an amazing job immediately bringing some character to this mystery man. He’s got some great potential for working into an existing G.I. Joe mythos, and also meshes with the Rise of COBRA universe as well.
Some great reviews, and some fantastic images for toys that are already rocking my world and I don’t even have them in hand yet. Great work, CADPAT!
