GeneralsJoes Reviews Sideshow Collectibles 12″ Destro

Unlike many other G.I. Joe fans out there, I was drawn to this 12″ Destro the first minute I saw it.  The great modern touches and terrific vintage throwbacks seemed to create the perfect combination for this Sideshow update.  Granted, it was nowhere near 100% vintage accurate, but I’m one of those folks who doesn’t need that sort of stuff to enjoy a figure.

All in all, as much as I was looking forward to the figure, the end result matched every single expectation I had.

Check out the Sideshow Collectibles Review section, or click the link below to read the review, and if you like what you see, the figure is still in stock at SideshowToy.com!

Destro Sixth Scale Figure

Gentle Giant plans for G.I. Joe have been confirmed – Jumbo O-Ring figures incoming!

Just yesterday we reported about the mysterious advertisement on the Gentle Giant Facebook page and hypothesized about what it might mean… now we find those hypotheses confirmed! Gentle Giant is indeed doing jumbo sized versions of the vintage o-ring figures! They’ve revealed a few of them at ComicCon already, with images courtesy of HissTank.com. The following figures have been revealed:

– Zap
– Stalker
– Grunt
– Snake Eyes
– Rock n Roll

My opinions on these? Mixed, to be honest. I love what they’re doing, and it’s a fun idea, but I’m not sure these will draw me in. Eventually I’ll likely end up with a few, but I don’t see myself going whole hog, especially on the straight arm versions. I will admit, though, it’s great that they come with their gear. That’s a cool touch.

Very cool to see someone investing in the brand, though, I hope they catch on with the collecting community! Thanks again to HissTank.com for the images.

EDIT – Big thanks to Matt from Twitter and AwesomeToyBlog for snagging some more great images! They’re added to the gallery below.

Gentle Giant’s Facebook page posts a mysterious G.I. Joe advertisement

Hmmm… well, San Diego ComicCon is just around the corner, and it seems that perhaps the folks at Gentle Giant might have something up their sleeves. I think we’re all aware of what Gentle Giant has done with Star Wars figures (like, make them really huge and sell them for $70 – 80).

Could they be considering the same move for G.I. Joe?

Over on their official Facebook page, Gentle Giant has posted a YouTube video of the original advertisement for G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero back in 1982. This may seem innocuous, but let’s not forget that ComicCon is this week (typically a place to announce exciting new product) and by all accounts what Gentle Giant has done with Star Wars has been deemed a success. Not only that, but a while ago, HISSTank.com cited sources that reported the same thing for A Real American Hero.

However, let’s not jump to conclusions. Jumbo Star Wars figures are a hefty $70 – 80 retail, and I seriously doubt Gentle Giant could produce jumbo sized vintage G.I. Joe figures, complete with full articulation, for the same price as Star Wars. It doesn’t seem feasible. But Gentle Giant is also known for statues and other collectible items as well.

Very interesting…

Looks like Joe fans should stay tuned for ComicCon this week, we may get more news than we bargained for. Check out the Gentle Giant Facebook Page for the post, and thanks to Matt from Awesome Toy Blog for letting me know it was posted there.

Sideshow Collectibles has discharged G.I. Joe…at least for now

The Year of the Snake has provided some of the best G.I. Joe Sideshow product we have seen to date, which is why it’s such a shame that G.I. Joe’s obscurity from retail has now extended to Sideshow Collectibles 12″ offerings.  At least for the next six months.

Sideshow Collectibles has announced that they will have no new G.I. Joe related news at SDCC this year, which means nothing of note until 2015 at the earliest.  As someone who just bought Major Bludd and is slated to get Destro in the mail on Wednesday, I’m disappointed by the news, but not necessarily surprised.

A quick perusal on the G.I. Joe section at SideshowToy.com will show you that many of their offerings are still in stock, and most of those offerings have been there for a while.  So, stay tuned, perhaps something cool will be coming next year, but for now, anyway, the disappearance of G.I. Joe at the 12″ scale has been extended to all formats.  Sound taps now.

Thanks to YT24 on Twitter for the heads up.

Very cool behind the scenes look at Sideshow Collectibles

There are only fringes of these videos that deal directly with G.I. Joe, but any kind of “behind the scenes” perspective when it comes to toy making is pretty interesting.  These are no different.

The folks at Sideshow Collectibles were interviewed by Tested.com and a pair of very revealing videos were released showing those interviews.  A great look at pre-production design, and preparing something for production.  These two videos focus on the Premium Format figures specifically, so expect to see some Crimson Baroness cameos.  Check out the videos on SideshowToy.com or embedded below.
