IDW G.I. Joe Comics News Round up

There have been several scattered stories about this week already concerning IDW’s G.I. Joe titles, but instead of spending all sorts of real estate talking about each one individually, I figured I’d recap a bit.

  • Comic Book Resources has posted a great interview with G.I. Joe: Origins creative team Marc Andreyko and Ben Templesmith.  They focus much of their attention on G.I. Joe: Origins #12, which hit today and features The Baroness.  A great read!
  • Speaking of G.I. Joe: Origins #12, we already have two reviews of this latest issue, posted at The Terror Drome and Panels on Pages respectively.

Last, but not least, IDW has announced that G.I. Joe: COBRA II #1 has sold out at retail!  They are currently working on issuing a second printing, with a special exclusive cover…check out the full press release after the jump!

G.I. Joe: Origins #12 5-Page Preview featuring The Baroness!

One of the core characters of the G.I. Joe mythos (and Rise of Cobra detractors would argue she became a bit overly “core”) The Baroness has had a ton of screen time, but surprisingly, her backstory is still somewhat of a blank slate.  We know about her brother, and her history with Snake Eyes, but we don’t know a whole lot past that.  Well, in this new IDW universe, they’re not crossing that bridge again, and we get a nice look at what makes The Baroness tick, even in this short preview.

G.I. Joe: Cobra II Issue #1 Reviews across the web

General reaction from the fandom as well as from the comics world at large is that the IDW G.I. Joe mythology is pretty slow, somewhat steady, and fairly non-exciting.  That is, with the exception of G.I. Joe: Cobra.  Across the board, G.I. Joe: Cobra has been getting absolutely rave reviews, with the latest installment, the G.I. Joe: Cobra Special winning an MTV Splash Page award.
Well, yesterday, the sequel to the ground-breaking mini-series arrived in comic stores everywhere, and folks across the web are already singing it’s praises.  Check out some reviews below.

Being the huge fan of G.I. Joe: Cobra that I am, I also read the book yesterday.  Yeah.  It rocked.
There wasn’t a whole lot of action, but it was chock-full of intrigue.  The art style is absolutely perfectly suited for a comic of this nature, the writing is excellent, and the character just oozes from the pages.  Croc Master, The Baroness, not to mention the obvious mystery of this newcomer who bares a striking resemblance to Jinx.  They’ve managed to get the Twins involved without them being ridiculous from day one, and to see their take on Croc Master and everything surrounding this new version of Cobra…well, it’s pretty damn thrilling.
It’s funny…I’m no big fan of the mainstream G.I. Joe book.  In fact, it’s left me fairly cold, with only a few injections of coolness.  But this Cobra book is almost making up for it.  They’re building Cobra up into such an awesome organization and mysterious entity that it has successfully MADE me care about the mainstream G.I. Joe book, even if that book hasn’t done it on its own.
The G.I. Joe: Cobra mini was fantastic.  The one-shot special was amazing.  The sequel, so far, twenty-two pages in, is keeping right up with the pace of the others, and I am loving it.

Another G.I. Joe: Cobra II 5-Page Preview has me drooling for more…

Yeah, tomorrow’s gonna be a great day.  For whatever reason, much of the IDW stuff hasn’t really been grabbing me…but G.I. Joe: Cobra did.  The G.I. Joe: Cobra Special did.  And from the looks of things, G.I. Joe: Cobra II is going to rock my balls off.  No amazing action or anything so far, but just the crisp writing, the unique art style and the way it all comes together is just impressive.  IGN has posted another 5-Page preview, which I’ve mirrored below.

Now the question is…  is that Jinx?  And if so, does this take place before the first series?  Or is this someone different?  I guess we’ll find out…  and if you missed the preview from yesterday, here’s that as well:

Special Preview for G.I. Joe: COBRA II … Croc-Master!

Forget Cobra Commander!  i09.com reveals the real Cobra star of G.I. Joe: Cobra II, and it’s Croc-Master!  Appearing here in a special six page preview and looking remarkably similar to his Real American Hero version, we get a very cool look at Cobra’s sinister director of security…I love this new take.  Check out the gallery below.

IDW's Cobra Commander revealed in G.I. Joe: COBRA II

Thanks to Phil Kost of JoeReloaded.com for relaying the info, IDW has sent out a press release about G.I. Joe: Cobra II (which launches January 27th much to my own delight!).  I would imagine most of us have seen the art for the potential Cobra Commander reveal already, but this is the first time IDW has admitted that’s who it is.  Click the “Read the Rest of this Entry” link below to check out the full blown Press Release.
