2011 Convention Exclusive clues start trickling in

So, we now know the date and place for the 2011 G.I. Joe Convention, which of course means that the guessing will start taking place!  Well, over on the GI Joe Collectors’ Club forums, “The Commander” has made our jobs at least a little bit easier.
A single thread has been created over there where they plan on posting information about the exclusive set for the upcoming 2011 convention, and so far they’ve given us two clues, albeit very minor ones.

“1) The set will contain 25A-style figures!
2) We are not revisiting a previous Convention set!”

So begins the game!
I know when they first announced that the o-ring figure convention sets were getting phased out, I was disappointed.  But it’s become quite evident that there is so limited a selection of tooling that really, we would only be shoe-horned into a very limited canvas that the club could work with.  As I see the Pursuit of Cobra surge forward, with Renegades looming in the distance, and think about all of the 25th Anniversary homage stuff that’s still hanging out there, I can think of a wealth of great things the Club can do with the new selection of tooling.
Hell, maybe they’ll even dip their toes into the Resolute pool?  One can only dream.
Regardless, they have so many more options with the new tooling format that I find it hard to complain, and I can’t help but get excited to see what they can do with this new format (when they’re not simply revisiting a set from years past).  Don’t disappoint me, Collectors’ Club!  😉

GI Joe Con 2011 Location and Dates Announced!

In a surprise email from the GI Joe Collectors’ Club, the location and dates of the 2011 G.I. Joe Convention have been revealed!  Here is the context of the email:

The 2011 International G.I. Joe Collectors’ Convention “G.I. Joe Con” will be held in Orlando, Florida, at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort, March 31-April 3!  This is an outstanding property at an outstanding rate!  You will not want to miss this one.  Orlando will be perfect this time of year, so bring the whole family for this fun-filled weekend!
Make your hotel reservations now at GIJoeCon.com.
Convention registration will be available this fall.  Watch for our new online registration system!”

The last time JoeCon was in Orlando was for the 2004 convention, and it was a BLAST.  While I’m sure there will be some concern about the dates, hopefully no one will be upset about the location.  Time to start thinking on whether or not I can make it next year.

JoeCon Exclusives: How they stack up since 2002

It has always been a popular topic of discussion to rank the convention sets since the 3.75″ scale was re-introduced in 2002.  What often gets lost are the convention EXCLUSIVES that are part of the set.  For those of you who are not familiar with this, the Exclusives are separate from the con set.  They are typically an extension of the con set story line and normally are more remembered than the actual set itself.  The con exclusives normally are highly sought after in the secondary markets and they really cause a lot of collector angst if they decided to pass on it the first time to only see the prices triple or quadruple later down the road.  These things are expensive enough, but have to pay four times as much can put a real pinch in your hobby.  In my list, I did not include the convention attendee free exclusive.  Technically, I consider those part of the con set. Basically, if it is anything I had to stand in line for in the club store, that is what is on this list.  On that basis, I did include the para-drop figure  even though they were given out a freebies early on, but now are either charged for or guarded by lock and key and David Lane.  Let’s take a look at the past 8 years a’la cmderinchief:

Dr. Venom's head revealed! Well, to me, anyway…

Okay, maybe I’m the only one who didn’t know this…    I haven’t seen much speculation online as to where Dr. Venom’s head came from, though Lanny Latham from the Collectors’ Club did confirm that it was retooled from the vintage line.  I’d combed through the archives and couldn’t quite figure it out.  But thanks to some dilligent GeneralsJoes commentors, who set me straight in my review post, I know now that Venom’s head was retooled from the Mortal Kombat Liu Kang!
Great detective work.  I love digging this stuff up, and I’m consistently surprised at how much mileage the Club can get out of those older tools (the ones still left in existence, anyway).  Check out the comparison image below.  Many features look similar…the hair, the nose.  But obviously the neck ball was removed, and the hair must have been trimmed up a bit as well.  Any thoughts from anyone else?

GeneralsJoes reviews GI Joe Collectors' Club Dr. Venom!

Yesterday I covered the GIJCC Adventure Team Commander.  Today, we’re focusing our attention on the other half of that two-pack, the GIJCC Exclusive Dr. Venom!  It took over two decades, but finally Cobra’s first mad scientist appears in plastic form.  You can check out the review in the GIJCC Reviews section or this link.
As always, too, if you like what you see, pick up the 2 pack at the GIJCC Shop.

GeneralsJoes Reviews the GIJCC Adventure Team Commander

My “one review per day” promise continues full steam ahead…and today I bring you a review for the excellent Adventure Team Commander, offered from the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club.  Using modern era sculpting with a newly tooled head, this is a great 4″ representation of the 12″ iconic Adventure Team leader.  I love the way the Club is combining the Adventure Team and Real American Hero universes.
Anyway, I’ve linked the review in with the Exclusives and the GIJCC Section, or you can just check it out directly right here.
