As promised the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club has officially revealed the 2011 Membership Exclusive incentive figure, Dial Tone!
Where the infamous G.I. Joe Communications Officer has been given a recent sex change in the IDW and Resolute universes, the Collectors’ Club features him in his familiar 1986 glory, filling a major hole in the 25th Anniversary line up.
Utilizing the torso from the 25th Anniversary Buzzer, arms and legs from Sgt. Airborne, and a newly tooled head and communications backpack, Dial Tone looks ready to fill in that vacancy in your 1980’s display shelf. A great looking update, and a good path to start going down for the Collectors’ Club, I have a feeling this will draw new people in a big way. Click the thumbnail preview below to check out the entire image!
Also of note is the newly shaded image for the upcoming Adventure Team “Sea Adventurer”…judging by the shadow, he looks to be coming with a repainted “Sting Raider” from the Valor Vs. Venom and Rise of Cobra line. Very cool little tidbit! Check it all out at GIJoeClub.com!
I really hope the fix the head on this one. Reminds me too much of a certain WWII German leader. Maybe it is just me.
at the risk of ending up in the “crosshair” again 😉 ….he looks like hes wearing groucho glasses….without the black frames.
if he were released on a card……sure. but, i cant/wont justify the price of the club just to get him.
everyone else, though……enjoy!
Wow… something about that just doesn’t come together. The head, torso, and arms just feel cobbled together in that shot as opposed to blending together for form a cohesive whole.
I also agree about that headsculpt. I keep expecting Aldo Raine and the boys to come knocking down the door and take him out.
Pass.
I wanted to credit you with this on JBL……but sadly, somebody’s not playing nicely over there……
I’m excited for it-but I agree, the head/stache needs to be tweaked a bit!!
I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. Hideous.
Wow.
That head, just…oy. I’ll probably still get it, because I’m a sucker and I want an original Dial-Tone for my 25th collection, but…oy.
That’s gotta be a scan of somebody, a sculptor of ye ole days maybe? Anyone know where the head came from. Past “new tooled” club heads were shrunk down 12″ heads
that head sculpt looks like saddam hussein.
the head looks like the time to make the donuts guy.
How hard is it to look at a picture of the character from the cartoon and not screw up the head sculpt? I’d rather just see them repaint a Stalker head at this point.
I like him. Is it just me?
What I don’t like is the sub for the sea adventurer. I thought it was gonna be something else, not another one of those Sting Raider repaints. Oh well.
I have to say too that at this point, I’m not really feeling old Dial-Tone. Maybe after we see some more pictures of him, he’ll look better (this looks like a photo shop.)
I know that the club has limited tooling to work with, but I really hate the torso choice. Seriously, it works for Buzzer. That’s about it. It just looks “wonky” for Dial-Tone.
Aw crap. I was fearing they’d find a way to mess this up. Was hoping so much it wouldn’t happen…but yes, it does look like Adolf is joining the Joes 🙁
The whole body looks…off. Like the parts really don’t fit together and they just forced it.
Too bad really.
Kind of looks like Red Star’s head, no?
“What I don’t like is the sub for the sea adventurer. I thought it was gonna be something else, not another one of those Sting Raider repaints. Oh well.”
I was hoping for something else as well.
However, one could always say that the vehicles for the Sea Adventurer and the Air Adventurer are stolen Cobra vehicles they repainted and rearmed.
Great, now I just got the Tiger Force commercial stuck in my head.
I think the only thing that fits with the figure is the torso. Everything else is horrible. The legs really don’t fit well, the arms look odd being so baggy, and the head is horrible. He looks rather bloated and it’s just bad.
I actually kind of like the DT sculpt. He’s not some pretty-boy. He looks old and tired and determined to make sure his job gets done.
I don’t see the Hitler resemblance at all. Frankly, the comparison wouldn’t be made if he lacked a mustache, and since it’s the wrong kind of mustache… yeah, it’s really not there.
That said, I think he does have a resemblance to Bruce McGill, especially back in his mustachioed days as Jack Dalton on MacGyver… and I quite like it. It lends a certain “fast-talker who can’t catch that big break” element to him for me, which in turn reminds me of DT’s characterization in the Sunbow episode “Sins of our Fathers.”
The reason I do not like the head, is that the face is too fat for the body. It seems off. It has to be the likeness of someone the sculptor knows or something.
Hideous! I saw a custom over at terrordrome that looks better than this. He uses I think flint’s head plus he uses a much better color. I hope they will fix this. This is just plain sucks.
What bothers me about this design is the torso mostly. I think the choice of Buzzer’s torso is bad because it ends up looking like a guy with a large torso is wearing a medium sweater over his shirt. Buzzer’s torso is just the wrong element here. A better choice in my opinion would have been to reuse the entire 2008 Sgt. Airborne body and torso with the same figure’s vest all done up in Dial Tone’s classic colors. Then it would have been perfect. This design that the Club has chosen you can tell is coming out of a selection process that still looks at the 1982-94 era as being the ultimate, where everything is sculpted tightly to the body. Dial Tone needs the separate vest from 2008 Sgt. Airborne to work right.
If it comes carded, then I won’t much care. But if it is loose in a baggie, then It’s not going to be all that I hoped for. The card will make the difference here.
hitler…….no……….sadaam…..maybe……….the donuts guy…..YES!
DT is Italian. I keep thinking Mario.
…which actually might have been the idea the sculptor was going for.
It’s bad, they screwed BIG, Airborne’s body and a good headsculpt would have been nice, but they missed the ball badly. I can live without this one.
I was heavily considering joining the club for Dial-Tone but consider those plans scrapped. This Dial-Tone got punched in the face one too many times.
I love it. Would everyone prefer if they reused the Falcon headsculpt? lol.
“DT is Italian. I keep thinking Mario”
Now I have a certain video game theme stuck in my head with DT saying “Itsa me. Dial-Tone”
I don’t mind the head. I really don’t like Buzzer’s souvenir dead soldier dog tags hanging out of his pocket. Maybe if they were painted black they might look like headphones. I wonder how they’re planning on handling the belt buckle. The picture looks like it’s just got paint slopped over it to cover the skull. I can almost accept Leatherneck with a skull belt buckle because he was a badass but Dial-Tone was a nerd who sat on a cot and ate beans.
At least they got the comm-pack right.
Not sure if that’s enough to sell me on a a renewal though.
Anybody know what the Clubs stance is on this sort of thing? Are they willing to go back and make changes if the general public is unhappy about something? I seem to remember that being the case once before.
Boy, that’s ugly.
I agree, Jeffrey, that Dial-Tone is DEFINITELY U-G-L-Y, and I seriously hope that GIJCC has some kind of alibi. If not, then they need to hop on over to HISS Tank and take a peek at a very nice Dial-Tone custom someone did.
From the image I saw, it was leaps and bounds beyond this one, especially if they went ahead and used the newly retooled pack from this version so he looks more original style. The only thing I didn’t care for was the use of the RoC Hawk head, but even THAT was a far cry better than the chubby faced version we are apparently doomed to get from GIJCC, and I’d be happier with that head rather than this one.
When we have Stalker, Flint, Lt. Falcon, RoC Sgt. Stone and Hawk, (at the very least) to choose viable Dial-Tone heads from and paint his ‘stache on, I see no reason why we should be forced to accept the chubby-faced Saddamish head shown above. His original figure was not so fat-faced as this. He looks like a fat Scotsman (no offense to any Scots out there, I’m a tad Scotch-Irish myself) playing the bagpipes. Dial-Tone is supposed to be slender and Hispanic, I believe, and that custom I saw on HISSTank MUCH more than fit the bill, using all existing parts. All we really needed was the retooled comm-pack to have our guy. I can guarantee this: IF I somehow manage to get one for myself, that chubby head is getting popped right off like a Pez, and replaced with one of the other options I mentioned.
SO, GIJCC…How about it? How about taking a look and doing something about this, so that the fans and members are much happier with this revival of an old fan favorite? Save this head for something else down the road, perhaps an Iron Grenadier accompaniment to Destro’s troops, in traditional Scottish attire, or a general for his troops or something of that nature. Either way, don’t stick us with it as Dial-Tone’s head…IF any of you guys are following this, that is.
Do the right thing, GIJCC…!
