Over on HissTank.com, Rulz has posted some more nice images of the upcoming Toys “R” Us Exclusive Arctic Threat Shipwreck. Seems a bit like more of the same to me, and I have no idea what’s up with that old school rifle, but cool to see some product anyway…

I don’t know what it is but this line has become almost creatively bankrupt lately. Sure we saw some great items at the Con this year but most of the products are really just recycles of existing parts over and over again. I think someone took the “reduce, reuse, recycle” mantra a bit too seriously.
I’m wondering about the choice of weapons too, but the M1 is a very reliable rifle, with a battle proven record in adverse conditions. But its from WW2. So I doubt that aside from color guards there are any in inventory.
its a TRU exclusive were you expecting new parts
anyway I like the way he looks
the M1 is confusing but i guess shippy might need a rifle that will fire no matter what and in arctic environments he could knock off more then a few cobras with that gun just look at what Simo hayha did with a mosin-nagant

you don’t need high tech gear when you’re a natural shot
I agree with Kingofnod5, you can’t come to expect new tooling with these TRU exclusives. Just not going to happen. I do think they do a pretty creative job of coming up with somethign that is worth buying though. Both the Arctic Threat Shipwreck and Doc are pretty fun looking figures. Not the best, but still worthwhile (IMO).
Looks like he’s going whaling with that big pike/spear. Gotta say I’m not sure why Shipwreck would be decked out in arctic gear but its a nice figures for a repaint. And its an arctic figure so it will find its way into my collection at some point.
I also notice that there is a packaged shot of this one as opposed to the other leaked figures we’ve seen recently. Could this be an indicator that some of these may be coming out sooner than next fall?
Oh I know it’s a TRU exclusive, wasn’t expecting any new tooling, but at least with Firefly, Bench Press, and Snow Serpent we got some cool results with the old tooling. This one just looks like another Arctic Snake Eyes/Snow Job repaint, especially all lined up in that one image. I have no issues with reused tooling, just wish it could have been reused a bit more creatively.
Stranger – this is a TRU exclusive, and I still maintain that the exclusives will continue to be released on schedule. It’s the mainline mass release stuff I’m worried about.
I think I’ll just wait on the Snow Job. (And really only for the rifle)
Frosted parrot.
I’ve been quite impressed with the past four TRU exclusive figures, but Shipwreck and Doc don’t do much for me, I’m afraid.
How frickin’ hard is it to get a Frostbite, or an Iceberg, or a Blizzard? Do we really need another Duke, Shipwreck and now Day-glo-Doc in Arctic flair? 2010 is shaping up to be a money saving year, I’m actually looking forward to what the Club has in store for their set this year.
Huh.
m6d, now that you mention it. Between the beard, the cap and all the snow gear, this Shipwreck KIND OF looks like Frostbite. Especially the Battle Corps version with its watchcap.
Mysterious Stranger, Shipwreck was later “upgraded” to a Navy SEAL, so that would give cause for him to be in arctic gear too. Though I do admit that is some really odd choices for weapons and accessories.
Justin, I do realize it is “just another” figure using the Arctic Assault/Ice-Viper tooling, but with it being a TRU Exclusive, what else could they have used? I don’t mind the look of this one since it looks like future arctic figures have some better looking “arctic gear”.
What it could have used Wild Weasel was a little more imagination. Some goggles, a black cap and a black beard with the name “Frostbite” placed on it.
I think Justin is worried ’cause he’s witnessing the exact same pattern that happened a few years back with sigma 6, hasbro only released re-used parts and gave us the “combat squad” which is kind of similar to these “tru exclusives” and the “Adventure Team” promised at least one more wave (*sigh*) then, Sigma 6 bitted the dust.(double *sigh*) Now Poc pushed back ’till fall 2010? That’s not good. I, on the other hand, didn’t like the Rise of Cobra toys, so the 25th anniversary that was collecting got cancelled too, and now i’m collecting Marvel Universe, although like justin, i’m worried ’cause i know that lately, the hasbro lines are only lasting a two-year lifespan. Case in point: Sigma 6, 25th anniversary, and who knows if if Rise/Pursuit of Cobra will last much longer; perhaps marvel universe won’t be around as much as i like to as well.
Alpine, why waste a sought after character like Frostbite on a TRU Exclusive? Then everyone is going to bitch it is only available at TRU. Not a winning situation.
I dunno, man, I don’t see it. A nice updated Resolute-themed Firefly would certainly qualify as a sought after character, and nobody complained about him being a TRU exclusive. In fact, the TRU Exclusives have seemed notoriously easy to get a hold of. Even me, who doesn’t have one within 70 miles has had no problems getting them. I think an exclusive line would be a perfect place for a figure like Frostbite, who certainly doesn’t have the mainstream appeal, yet would really strike a chord with fans. Kind of like Doc.
Well Wildweasel, there certainly seems to be TRU exclusive figures in abundance. He might be only available at TRU, but he’d be easy to come by.
And instead of another Shipwreck, we’d get as you put it yourself, “a sought after character”.
A winning situation!
I think having a Frostbite hitting retail around the same time that the Snowcat does would have been awesome. Collectors would have bought the Snowcat, then turned around to bite Frostbite to put him in it, which means buying more product, to complete one gimmick.
I don’t know. Just seems that Hasbro didn’t put a whole lot of thought into the overall execution, and that once again they had the opportunity to do something cool and make some more money but they dropped the ball.
Well I’ve read a quite a few times where people don’t have a TRU close enough that they are willing to drive to. I’ve also read where some have had a hard time finding the TRU exclusives. Where it seems some areas are filled up with the exclusives, some appear to be lacking. I’m not saying putting Frostbite in the line is a bad idea, I just don’t know if putting him as a store exclusive is the right idea. And yes, he is “a sought after character”, can’t count how many times I’ve seen people asking why we haven’t gotten him yet.
Well, we did technically get him before, with the Ice Dagger.

And honestly, just use your imagination guys. I’ll just be renaming him Frostbite, I recommend you do the same.
WildWeasel, I have never heard anyone mention that they can’t find one of the TRU exclusives. Honestly.
And the fact that he is a “sought after character”, well, I think having him at retail, albeit just one major retailer is still having him available at retail.
And having him available at retail is better than him not being available at all.
And no thanks Strider.
Strider, it’s not that I would prefer to be anal retentive on the naming of Joes and that sort of thing, but the thing is, I don’t play with my Joes. I display them in my case with their filecards. If I played with them, got them out in the dirt and that sort of thing, I could use my imagination from creating battles, giving each figure a set of lines like it was a cartoon and even re-imagining the figure as someone else as you suggested. Sitting in a case is something else though. There is no “imagination”.
There is only the looking and admiring of the figures as they stand there in my case.
I love Joe, but I’m not someone who collects any and everything and won’t snatch up a figure that is frankenjoed from other parts and looks nothing like the character I know. (I am talking about Rise of Cobra version of Frostbite)
To each their own as they say. If you can, that’s great. But to me, I only collect the stuff that looks like the stuff I know.
Just like some only collect 0-rings and some only collect the 12 in dolls.
And before anyone suggests that the Joes that resemble the Joes we know are becoming rare, I’ll say, I’m aware of that.
And it’s also the reason the line isn’t selling and being put on hiatus. Those who like Joe (adults) aren’t getting what they like now. And the line is suffering.
Alpine, I can understand that. I actually traded for a bunch of 25th stands I didn’t have, in order to put some of my LBC figures on them (Made the Pit Commando “Grunt,” and the ROC Deep Six “Torpedo”).
But that really doesn’t help with the filecards, sadly…
However! There are work arounds for everything. Take the images from yojoe.com of the filecards, photoshop the pic of Shipwreck onto the filecard of Frostbite, print, and voila! Not the ideal solution, but desperate times call for desperate measures 🙂
“Those who like Joe (adults) aren’t getting what they like now. And the line is suffering.” That is so damn painfully true; i just hope things will go better for the 2010, man, i’m one of the most pessimist guys and here i am, hoping for the best.
Lol Strider! Yes, always a way around everything. I’m just going to wait (and hope) 2010 is a better year for collectors with Joe and we see more product for guys like us who remain faithful to the brand and a wider selection of characters instead of the same ones over and over. (Snowjob anyone? lol)
Lol Strider! Yes, there’s always a way around everything! I think I am just going to wait (and hope) that 2010 is a better year for us collectors who have remained faithful to the line for product on our wishlists and a larger variety of characters. (Snowjob anyone, lol)
Sorry for the double post. And Neon Viper: The writing is on the wall. Collectors buy G I Joe. Not kids. What Hasbro decides to do with that fact becomes the future of G I Joe.
Yeah, but hasbro put all his effort trying to attract more kids with those huge spring-loaded launchers and look what’s happening so far, 25th anniversary put good things in motion for the brand, and now it’s stalling, as a collector, i’m buying everything i can, hoping to get more cool stuff such as some PoC figs; but the future really does look doubtful.
Sad, but true.It was predicted by so many over the past year too.
The future of Joe is in the collector segment. It doesn’t matter what a few here and there say.
Alas, we’d better stop with the negative facts. Someone will accuse of chanting ‘deth of the line’ or ask us who peed in our cereal, lol.
I do hope things start looking up for what it’s worth.
I was just at TRU tonight and picked up a Neo Viper in an arctic Shipwreck’s package. Anyone else see anything like that?
