The thrilling conclusion to IDW’s stellar limited series hit comic shops on Wednesday, and reviews have cropped up in several various places online:
By and large, the reaction has been raving…pretty much every review I read is stellar and positive, and I agree completely. Ever since hearing the premise for the story, I had a good feeling about it, and I was not let down. From the fast-paced first issue, straight through the twists and turns, and all the way to the biggest twist at the end, this has been a suspensful, action packed thrill ride, from beginning to end.
COBRA is given some instant credibility, a relatively unknown character in Chuckles gains some incredible depth, and in just four issues, lots of groundwork has been laid for the future. Excellent story.
I have to find it more than a little ironic that Chuckles, a guy in a Hawaiian shirt who never got any real credibility has now been the star of two great stories, both from the Devils’ Due days, and now in IDW. Just goes to show, that even the smallest “throw away” character can be a great one, if given the right chance to shine.
Yeah. The thing about Chuckles is, in terms of modern warfare and anti-terrorist movements, an undercover guy with the ability to infiltrate and assess the activities of a para-military group is vital and completely relevant, maybe even more so than a Commando or Heavy Weapons Specialist. I feel the same way now about Mainframe. His specialty is MUCH more relevant in today’s society, as information transfer and idea-spreading is at the forefront of our culture. A lot of untapped potential there, and while DD killed him off, (In a heroic way, so I’m cool with it) I’m looking forward to IDW doing good things with him. (Being an IT guy myself, I always root for the Computer Guy!)
I could not believe the ending to the last issue. This one just blew me away even more. I can’t wait to see how the main title reflects these events. The reveal of “Mr. X” is very obvious in hindsight but that’s what makes it work. And Chuckles… damn he’s awesome. Always loved the idea of an undercover guy and this just takes it to the next level. His stock just shot through the roof for me.
Read this series then tell me again why the upcoming movie couldn’t be as intense and as deep.
