Halfway through this Top 10 list, and I have a feeling things might get a little controversial. As if putting Data-Viper way back at #6 wasn’t bad enough, now I’m going to get under the skin of not only the Sigma 6 haters, but also the Rise of Cobra haters and the “Marlon Wayans as Ripcord” haters. It’s a three-for-one deal!
But really, my love and desire for this figure only have to do with one of those three things, and based on what I’ve heard from other fans, I don’t think my opinion is that dramatically different from many of yours.
5 – G.I. Joe: The Pursuit of Cobra Ripcord Sub-Arctic Diver
Yes, it’s another Ripcord figure. Yes, it’s from the earlier days of G.I. Joe: The Pursuit of Cobra, and really, it’s a guy in a scuba suit which means there isn’t a whole lot of use or extraneous detail to appeal to the general collector crowd. But for me, and I would think for other lovers of Sigma 6, it’s got something very important. It’s got a 4″ scale Sigma Suit. John Warden, who is currently the design maestro of the G.I. Joe line, also worked on Sigma 6, and based on conversations I’ve had and that I’ve read, he has a love for that property. With this Ripcord figure, he seemingly shared that love by giving him a straight up Sigma Suit, and I love it. Even though I strongly doubt that Hasbro would ever re-visit the Sigma 6 theme in a 4″ scale, giving collectors a good custom base to do it themselves makes a ton of sense, and I’m crushingly disappointed that it never went anywhere.
Sure, there are other options. Heck, many fans would argue that the Rise of Cobra Reactive Armor was more or less a Sigma Suit and could be used as such for customs. But the Ripcord was different. He had that unique texture where there wasn’t rubberized coating. He had those signature ports on his arms…this guy WAS Sigma 6 at a smaller scale, and the fact that he most likely will never be released is a true shame.
Based on what I’ve heard from other current Joe fans, I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks like this. Many folks seem to have the opinion that Sigma 6, done in a proper scale, would be a great addition to the current run of G.I. Joe. Many fans claim that the only issues they had with it was the fact that it was at an 8″ scale and that it went totally overboard into the animated styling. Regardless, though, it certainly seems as if we may not see this figure going forward, especially with all of his accessories going to the Night Landing raft, but I’ll still hold onto this dream. Go Sigma!

Probably in the minority here but this one sits with the Ravens Wing for me, dull and boring. Drab, lifeless colors and just the same ol same ol. It’s one of the few in the case that werent spectacular and amazing to me.
I feel like I must have seen pictures of a different concept case. Clutch, Raven Wing, Ren Scrap Iron and this one barely registered with me.
I guess I’m more of a GIJCC-type traditionalist than a Sigma 6/RoC/Renegades quasi-futuristic armor-plated anime fan.
That’s the fun thing about the Concept case: Everyone has different opinions on what they’d like to see produced.
Look at you, trying to take the wind out of his not-quite-witty sails.

Suuuuuuuuch a fanboy, Bell. 🙂
You know me too well.
At first I was a little surprised you put this in. I would have put it in my bottom ten. But once I saw Sigma 6 in the text I just sighed, rolled my eyes and said, “yeah, figures”. I’m with Hawkwinter, I just see another diver dude. Nothing special. He’s all yours Justin.
Yeah but it’s something other than that 25th Torpedo mold that they’ve run into the ground.
I’m not arguing that point. But if you had to pick 10 guys from that case, would you pick that one? Not me. If Hasbro made him I’d pick one up. Might put a Dollar General Shipwreck head on it. But I’m not gonna ask Hasbro to make this figure.
I don’t know. I don’t know anything about Sigma 6 so I don’t know if a Sigma suit has other uses than diving. Take off the diving gear and he may well have a pretty versatile suit that can be used for a number of different things.
I like the figure, but I don’t really understand the attraction of the Sigma 6 ports on it. They don’t look like they are actually functional… are they? If not, it seems like a bunch of strange little bumps that have no purpose.
They are probably not functional on the 4″ figure, but they were very visible and functional on the 8″ figure, and including them here just ties them more tightly to the Sigma 6 concept, which rocks on all levels.
Hmmm… so you like them because it reminds you of the bumps on the larger figures, which wouldn’t have been there if they weren’t to serve the function of attaching things. A bit circuitous for me… 🙂
But they don’t bother me all that much either, so I would still buy a couple.
However, I personally think they should make this figure just as a favor to you. I really do think they should support their biggest supporters.
I should also mention, that I actually do think Sigma 6 figures are awesome. I didn’t like them at the time because they took the place of the smaller scale, but now I have been picking some of them up because they are a cool side line. Zartan is my flat-out favorite… that one is just cool!
“I’m going to get under the skin of not only the Sigma 6 haters, but also the Rise of Cobra haters and the “Marlon Wayans as Ripcord” haters. It’s a three-for-one deal!”
And for that, your karmic punishment will be to see this figured released with a generic masked head ala Skydive if/when it hits stores. 😉
I would be okay with that. The Sigma Suit is the only important thing here. 🙂
I would have liked to see this figure as well. Wet Suit, Torpedo, and Deep Six could use another swim buddy.
Now, paint it purple and red and put the PoC Firefly head on it. And tool up a manta ray…
1:18 scale Sigma suit = awesomesauce!!!!
