I can already sense the rage coming… What?!? Number six?! How dare you!
Many folks might wonder why this guy got pushed so far back in my list, even though cracking the Top Ten is a great thing in the first place…and honestly, I can’t really explain it, other than to say that a lot of this figure’s tooling is appearing elsewhere in the line already, and even though this is a very cool new concept, I have found other things in the case that I feel like I want (or need) to see more.
That’s not to say I don’t like this figure, and I’m dying to see this guy released. Of course I am. He’s obviously very high on my list. But there are other figures that are higher. Judging by the responses I’ve been getting in the Concept Case Survey, I would say many of you would disagree with me, however. As a list designed to spark discussion, though, that works for me.
6 – G.I. Joe: 30th Anniversary Data-Viper
Ahhh, yes, the Data-Viper. Anyone who says this new concept figure is amazing, I would not disagree. He has a very unique and captivating design with a perfectly sculpted uniform, a very interesting new concept, and some incredibly cool accessories. I love this head sculpt, I really like the helmet, and the Predator-launching backpack with control gauntlets are a work of brilliance.
So, why #6 and not cracking my top 3? Mostly because as we’ve seen with the Wave 2 3-Packs, much of the Data-Viper tooling is going to be used for the G.I. Joe: Retaliation Sgt. Airborne, and the Predator drone is coming with the Wave 3 Ultimate Duke. That still leaves a lot of cool elements to bring to the Data-Viper, like the helmet, backpack, and gauntlets, but I still can’t help but want to see a few other things more.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a hell of a figure, and I will rejoice with the rest of you when he is released, but if nothing else, the concept case convinced me there are even better things out there that I’m also eagerly awaiting. Check out the images from JoeCon below.

I like the Data-Viper, and I would buy a few if he was released, but he wouldn’t even make my top thirty-five of what was in that case.
How dare you? 😛
How dare you?
PASS
not a huge fan of this figure, the colors seem very institutional like an asylum, the gear is kinda cool but lacks a great design. its a great idea but to poorly executed. there are much better concepts in that case to be made.
I know he’s a fan favorite, and he’s got some cool stuff, but it’s such a niche figure that I’m not too concerned. He flies the drone around and… then what? That head is too crazy to imagine him at a computer station. Somewhere between this figure and the original TeleViper is a modern Cobra Comm-Tech design waiting to be realized.
Pass, unless you REALLY want an Invid figure to pose next to Ashiko and the Cyclone.
I’ll pass on this one. Not liking it at all.
I love this figure so much and was really bummed when it didnt get produced in the POC line…stupid idiot buyers (what do you know…we want this figures!) Anyways He’s head is really beat up by this point so I figured I show a version of him when he was in better shape.

It didn’t get produced because the tooling costs were too high. It had nothing to do with buyers.
I didn’t realize that, that’s good to know thanks!
But his tooling is being used for a Retaliation version of Airborne, apparently.
I think it was the accessories, not the figure itself. The budget also depends on what else was supposed to be in that wave too.
meh
I like this figure. I have an idea on where he would be used in my Cobra ranks. He will be in control of a squad of B.A.T.S. The equipment and helmet that he wears allows him to see whatever that B.A.T that he is controlling sees; He can also take complete control of a B.A.T. He then can switch from one B.A.T to another as necessary and can change their programing or orders as they complete their mission.
Great figure, but one with limited appeal (like the Jungle Viper). For every Data Viper I’d buy, I’d get 5 or 6 updated 30th style Cobra Officers, Tele-Vipers, Eels, and Snow Serpents.
hmmm, aside from using that head on a metal gear solid ninja custom i coukd easily pass this figure, it has no place in my joe-verse
I would buy 5 like all the army builders. Insanely love this figure!!
I have begged Gary Goggles to nab this for me, to mo avail.
After reading these comments one does have to wonder what the hell happened to all those enraged fans from a year ago who were screaming bloody murder that this figure wasnt going to see the light of day.
My mind hasnt really changed on this one, hes cool, but not super cool. Much better than the super crappy Ravens Wing which looks like a two minute newbie custom (regardless of the concept), but still no where near HEAT Viper, Crimson Guard Immortal or Snow Serpent heights.
I’d still buy a dozen or so though……
Definitely an interesting figure. What I like most about him and the upcoming Duke are that they come with the Predator drone. Over at JoeSightings, I start a thread asking if other people would be interested if they released Predators or other UAVs. It shows me that Hasbro designers are listening to the fans or at least they have similar ideas on where to take the line.
