Yeah, I know, not exactly the Oscars, but the MTV Movie Awards has listed their nominations, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has 6 of them. The nominations are below:
- Best Kiss (Channing Tatum & Sienna Miller)
- Best Fight (Ray Park vs. Byung-hun Lee & Sienna Miller vs. Rachel Nichols)
- Best Villain (Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Sienna Miller)
- Best Ass Kicking Star (Channing Tatum & Sienna Miller)
- Best Male Performance (Channing Tatum)
- Best Movie (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra)
Hmmm…well, we all know the MTV Movie Awards are cheese-worthy and are more for the spectacle than the actual awards…and any award that considers Channing Tatum for anything based on his role in The Rise of Cobra doesn’t get much confidence from me.
But hey, slow news day, so there ya go. Hit up MTV.com for the full run down.
This is bad…
Did my part:Registered, voted and didn’t give one vote to Rise of Cobra. YO JOE!!

If Chistoph waltz loses to ANYTHING from GIJoe RoC, then ANY cred MTV had will be lost to me. No offense to Joseph Gordon-Levitt for his decent CC but Christoph Waltz’s Landa is THE BEST VILLIAN of 09 no contest.
Oh c’mon now. This is absurd. Even those who liked the movie readily admit it was a mindless popcorn flick. Best movie???? Do they watch any other movies???
And the ultimate insult : Best Male Performance? I would vote Mr Potato-head over the mindless, always-stoned expressionless performance this moron gave. It’s one of the big reasons I’ve coem to really despise this film.
But then….who watches MTV anymore?
geez… have a little fun with it. I’m all for supporting the brand even if the movie wasn’t classic ARAH.
My only regret with Rise of Cobra is that it didn’t generate enough dollars for Hasbro to continue with Spring assortments. Waiting for the Fall blows, I hope we get some more positive news in Rhode Island at the end of April.
I know I’m going to likely catch a lot of flak for this, but it needs saying, so I’m going to say it anyway:
“Supporting the brand” is EXACTLY the attitude that GETS us this type of RoC crap. Instead of actual GI Joe we get GI Junk, which is a real GI Joke.
I’m all for supporting GI Joe, but holy crap people, choose quality over quantity. There was nothing quality about the RoC movie except the finishing credits, which signaled that the trainwreck was over. Just because it has a GI Joe logo splashed across it, DOES NOT make it worth supporting and praising, much less be able to call it a quality product. It is however a quantity of product alright, a HUGE, smoking quantity of crap, straight from the horse’s @$$, and Hama helped feed the horse…along with an unfortunately sizable group of people who will support anything GI Joe, but will stand up for very little, if any of it…except in hopes of not offending Hasbro by admitting how bad it actually was.
They say if you lie to yourself enough, you actually begin to believe it. So, I’m thinking that there are a good many of you out there in Joeland, whom have simply convinced yourselves that this RoC movie is so wonderful because you’re just afraid to admit that it wasn’t really that good and you don’t want to be attacked for not liking it, because of the sheer number of “yes men” who will defend Hasbro at any cost, even their own dignity…
As for MTV and credibility, they lost all credibility about the same time they lost the “M” from MTV. The only thing MTV does worth a crap anymore is an occassional movie. The rest of their programming is drivel for the simpletons and the ignorant. I mean if you didn’t realize this before, look at their nominations… Pffft! What a joke.
Tater Channing should go back to doing the teen movie stuff. That’s more his level of acting. (Mr. Potato Head, now there’s a guy with talent, lol.)
Alpine, Excellent work on your mission. There may be hope for regaining the ground lost us by that sad, sad little joke of a movie. (Of course, the pathetic sequel in 2012 will flush it all back out to sea and reignite the battle for those with taste, who can see how un-GI Joe RoC was, and those without, who simply refuse to ADMIT how un-GI Joe it was.)
Personally, I think Hasbro should have authorized some post film editing, changed the names of all characters concerned, and sold it to whatever company owns the rights to Metal Gear, so that THOSE fans could enjoy their movie under its proper name, Metal Gear: Snakebite, as well as a figure line that probably would have done that brand some justice at least, since it only hurt GI Joe’s reputation, in so many venues around the world.
The fact that MTV even nominated “GI Joke: The Rise of Compost” for ONE award (aside from a 2-way tie with Transdeformers 2, for crappiest franchise film of the year), much less SIX of them, shows how little credibility those dweebs at MTV deserve, in any aspect of the terminology.
So, are Hawkwinter and Alpine the only ones to be found on this site, who are consistently unafraid to stand up and speak out against this constant barrage of junk that Hasbro is always trying to force on us, without fear of offending “the great gods of Hasbro and their mighty minions”?
I mean, seriously people, Hasbro is out to make a buck, pure and simple, so you KNOW they aren’t going to just completely “kill” this franchise because we might stand up to them and tell them that we don’t like something, rather than kissing their collective @$$#$ by saying, “we just LOOOOVE everything you do Hasbro! Please, oh PLEASE, shovel some more $#!@ down our throats!”, just like Tiny Tim begging for more scraps… But at least he wasn’t that desperate to be an absolute drone. MTV …now there’s a network of total knobs.

Color me curious… so what is “actual GIJoe?”
pre / post-Serpentor? Sgt Slaughter? Eco Warriors? Tiger Force? Ninja Force? Extreme? Sigma 6? GvC? Spytroops? VvV? The ever successful collector driven DTC line?
Please define for the world what is “actual GIJoe.” or accept the fact that you have an opinion and your expectation was not met. The really good news is it’s not the end of the world.
The anti-ROC crowd is so very similar to the “155 1/2 but” crowd. The guys who say “Let’s ignore the DDP universe because the Marvel universe was so much better but also just ignore the following laundry list of terrible things from the Marvel U as well because well… that’s not “actual GIJoe” either.”

They sometimes have some good points, and some points I do agree with. I think it comes down to delivery. When it’s well thought out constructive criticism, I have no problem getting behind it if I agree with it, but when it’s a constant whining and crying day after day the schitck gets old, and sadly I can’t even take it seriously if I agree with it.
First, I am not naive enough to feel that my 20+ years collecting this brand has earned me some type of entitlement credit where I’m now owed by Hasbro for them to meet my wishes. They don’t owe me anything and when the time comes that I am no longer satisfied with direction I have no problem walking away. I never touched Sigma 6 (although I thought the packaging and art were very nice) and ROC was pretty much a pick and choose for me. I didn’t have a problem with that, in fact it was a nice break from the two straight years of buying the anniversary line. It looks as though some having a bit of an addiction. If god forbid certain characters aren’t on the horizon or it’s a theme they don’t like, well grab the torches and pitchforks! How dare that toy company that caters to kids think they know better than me what the direction of the line should be!!
While I enjoy the early ARAH era the most, I’m not one of these people who are seemingly stuck in that the only good to ever come out of the line happened in the years between 1982 and 1986 and any other attempts have failed miserably and no attempts at future innovation of the line or direction to the story should ever be made. I like to see Hasbro take a chance on things, but at the same time I’m not fond of the idea that we need 10 Snake Eyes, Dukes, and Storm Shadows every year. I wish they’d retire certain characters like Snow Job and Wild Bill for a period of a theme or so unless they specifically fit in the line with a reason. Although that may not be possible if Hasbro doesn’t carry as many trademarked names as they did in the 80’s. I don’t know.
And yes Hasbro is out to make a buck, but they aren’t here to cater to us. The sooner some of you accept that simple fact the sooner you might actually start to enjoy this brand. We’re not that big of a fanbase. And the fanbase that we are is split into 12″ / O-ring / 25th style / comic collectors. Sure some of those overlap, but the potential for this line to grow lies with kids not an aging ever shrinking collector base. Sorry but Star Wars, Transformers, and I’d even wager the Marvel Universe lines have much larger fanbases, a worldwide audience, and they are the big sellers thus garnering more attention from the H, and that’s not going to change anytime soon.
Wow– I’ve truly stepped into a “Bizarro Universe”. Channing Tatum is nominated for an ACTING performance? When did he start acting? Certainly not with his awful “ten-hut” at the beginning of “Rise of Cobra”.
It’s funny– my friends and I enjoy B-movies and we all agree that RoC was nothing more than a big budget b-movie. It’s okay, not great, with a mostly cheesy plot and some tepid acting. JGL stands out a bit as the Doctor as did Byung-hun Lee but the rest was pretty awful. Ray Parks was given NOTHING to work with as Snake Eyes was mostly just a prop for most of the scenes he was in. Even Dennis Quaid chewed up the scenery like he was channeling Ryan Stiles’ impression of John Wayne from “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?”
The shining star in the Joe world right now, at least for me, is the comic series from IDW.
I really hope the script writers of the sequel learn from the mistakes of the first film. (I’m aware that they are not permitted to simply reboot the continuity– which is a grave misfortune.) Otherwise, the franchise will continue to be GIJoke instead of GIJoe.

Shore..you do realize these are just as cheesy or even worse than the Razzies? Right?
You do realize that by giving your vote you’re actually doing more harm than good right?
I guess you thought I was being the typical hater and showing my distaste of ROC? Right?
Quite the opposite. ROC has put enough of a stain on this brand as it is and the brand really doesn’t need anymore cheesy we’re laughing AT you not WITH you attention brought to it.
So give yourself a pat on the back for completely misreading the situation and isn’t it ironic that brotha Alpine did some good for the brand and Shore Patrol who thought he was actually didn’t!
Guys IF YOU DO care about G. I. Joe, whether it’s ROC, the classics, resolute or sigma 6 DON’T vote for Joe here. Let the cheesy awards go to SOMEONE else.
So, are Hawkwinter and Alpine the only ones to be found on this site, who are consistently unafraid to stand up and speak out against this constant barrage of junk that Hasbro is always trying to force on us, without fear of offending “the great gods of Hasbro and their mighty minions”?
Let me sum it up for you friend.
1. Half the time Hasbro doesn’t know what they want to do with G. I. Joe. Even former employees admit that.
2. The other half of the time, they simply don’t care.
3. The community is riddled with apologists and “tough guys” who are losers in the real world and get their kicks by being tough behind a monitor by showing how “cool” they are or how tough they are by converging in numbers and ganging up on anyone who disagrees with their views.
The future of G I Joe is indeed bleak. Now, you’ll see that they’ll crawl out of the woodwork here and tell me the future is awesome because of POC. The facts that they don’t see or refuse to see are:
1. ROC didn’t connect with the kids and neither did Sigma 6. There’s NO reason in the world to think that POC will change that.
2. “Fans” are NOT estatic about POC. It’s a continuation of ROC that’s all. Hasbro saved money to get away from ROC heads and packaging. They’re trying to make it “fan friendly” with packaging. But it’s all the same stuff. Same body parts from the ROC line re-painted and the same characters re-hased that people are tired of. We see more Duke, more Snake Eyes, another Snow Job instead of Iceberg or Blizzard, another Zartan etc.
They are relevant. Sure. But in the mean time, that doesn’t mean they are going to get bought.
POC, whatever we actually see will be peg warmers just like ROC. But you can’t tell these guys that. They thought ROC was going to be a hit as well. Look how that turned out.
In all honesty it’s better to be a Star Wars, Transformers or He-Man fan. Those lines get more love from Hasbro and Mattel, fan appreciation and also just love in general.
With G.I. Joe all you get are the same lines of BS that Hasbro appreciates us, but can’t ever find ways to give us what we want for some reason or another, Resolute 7 packs being the exception, constant delays, cancelations and hiatus. On top of that we get ridiculous amounts of re-painted parts and re-hashed characters.
That’s why people are getting burned out.
“So, are Hawkwinter and Dutch Napalm the only ones to be found on this site, who are consistently unafraid to stand up and speak out against this constant barrage of junk that Hasbro is always trying to force on us, without fear of offending “the great gods of Hasbro and their mighty minions”?” -Silent Master”
Todd. Can you guess who else I am?
First, I am not naive enough to feel that my 20+ years collecting this brand has earned me some type of entitlement credit where I’m now owed by Hasbro for them to meet my wishes.
It’s not entitlement..It’s who buys the brand and who doesn’t. ROC should have proved that to you–Alpine.. Or wait am I “Dutch Napalm”.
I want to be Larry Hama today. Can I please?
I mean, seriously people, Hasbro is out to make a buck, pure and simple, so you KNOW they aren’t going to just completely “kill” this franchise because we might stand up to them and tell them that we don’t like something, rather than kissing their collective @$$#$ by saying, “we just LOOOOVE everything you do Hasbro! MTV …now there’s a network of total knobs.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head with this comment Silent Master.
But don’t expect those guys to see your point and wake up.
In all honesty, you’re better off just getting into something else. Star Wars or He-Man I would recommend off the bat. Marvel is pretty good, expensive, but good. Even Transformers fans are happier than the Joe guys. And you don’t get a barrage of apologists constantly waving their hands at you saying “quiet! You’ll make them mad!”
I’ve had my fun with the guys, and in all honesty I don’t hate them like they hate me, I get a laugh out of it all just getting a rise out of them because it’s just toys and have the time they can’t see the grin on my face when I’m typing and think I’m dead serious every time I type something.
Just come back in 6 mos or 1 year, and say I told you so and that’s all you need to do. I could. But I won’t. I’m honestly starting to feel bad for these guys. I think Joe is all they have and they just honestly can’t comprehend in their mind or don’t want to what’s going on right now.
“I think Joe is all they have and they just honestly can’t comprehend in their mind or don’t want to what’s going on right now.”
Says the guy who has the last 5 responses. Awesome.
It’s not like these are the finalists, the ones that get shown on the night of the awards. Checked for one of the categories and there were 27 nominees. That’ll get narrowed down a lot, and we might not even see mention of G.I. Joe the night of the awards.
“Todd. Can you guess who else I am?”-Dutch Alpine
Some sad individual who got bounced off Savage Sounoffs many, many years ago for the same childish antics? 😉
Sorry but that’s all I can come up with.
“I’ve had my fun with the guys, and in all honesty I don’t hate them like they hate me, I get a laugh out of it all just getting a rise out of them because it’s just toys and have the time they can’t see the grin on my face when I’m typing and think I’m dead serious every time I type something.”-Dutch Napalm
So that’s why you had all these PMs to mods on Joesightings just before you were once again given a vacation because you couldn’t cool off. Because you really just don’t care. 😉
Or is it that you just enjoy being an internet troll to get your kicks and put a smile on your face?
See the thing is we don’t hate you either. You’re just a screen name, apparently multiple screen names. As website owners and admin and even those who have participated in the discussions through the years, who have put in countless hours of our own time to build this community, we have a responsibility in how we run our sites and forums, and when you have an individual who crosses the line of a constructive debate and resorts to constant attacks of other individuals because they have no other leg to stand on it creates a cancerous environment that others community members may find unappealing and then leave. When the productive, enthusiastic members of the community decide then to leave, then the community suffers. See we don’t want the community to suffer such a fate that you seem to get a kick out of. And we’ve found the best way to cure that is to eliminate the cancer.
I’ll just say “meh” i mean, who really cares about MTV anyway? damn channel is full of lady gaga videos right now, so that’s supposed to bother us? even for Hasbro RoC is just water under the bridge right now. The only thing that worries me is the sequel, but on the bright side, and if the prophecies are true, maybe the world will end as we know it in 2012 luckily before summer flicks, and we won’t have to see another dreadful GIjoke movie.
Well Alpine, while I really do agree with a lot of what you are saying and have been saying for a long time, after these posts I do have to wonder, do you have any hope at all for the future of this franchise? And if not, why do you still care?
Your reasoning for what’s happening with PoC may be sound, I won’t even argue that, there’s no real proof either way, but when it comes down to to it, I don’t even care what their reasoning is, as long as I get something I like. Just like after all the customer relations b.s. is out of the way, the only thing Hasbro cares about is whether we buy their product.
I bought 7 things from the RoC line that I am using for customs, and that’s it (Ok, I like teh RoC Para-Viper for what it is). After buying hundreds and hundreds of 25th stuff the year before, that was my protest last year. I don’t really feel the same way about PoC. But unless some sort of miracle happens with the sequel of RoC, GIJoe may become a once every two years sort of hobby for me.
