In what was one of the most unexpected turns in recent G.I. Joe animation news, Shout! Factory has revealed that the much maligned Sunbow production of G.I. Joe: The Movie will see release in High Definition Blu-Ray Disc format!
While there are plenty of things to not like about the movie, I still think it was a lot of fun for what it was, and greatly look forward to seeing it again in great quality. The information comes from the Twitter Feed of Shout! Factory rep Brian Ward.
In celebration, embedded below are some of the great parts from G.I. Joe: The Movie…the rest are posted after the jump.
Thats’s cool. I’ve got the one from a few years ago, but I’ll probably bite for Blu-ray.
I think this movie gets a lot of crap it doesn’t deserve, I actually really like it; yeah, cobra-la was an awful idea, but there’s a lot of cool in the movie stuff too. I love the opening sequence, it’s so awesome! Plus, the movie has what’s easily my favorite version of the GI Joe theme song. I also really liked Lt. Falcon. his character arc was interesting, and I liked his relationship with Duke; they remain brothers in my joeverse. Plus there’s a lot of great lines! If not for Cobra La and the retcon origin of Cobra Commander as a thousands-year old snake guy, I think this movie would be considered a classic. Honestly, I liked it better than the Transformers movie. At least Duke’s death had meaning and purpose, and wasn’t just shoe-horned in so that Hasbro could sell the worst Transformer ever. Rodimus Prime… ugh…
It’s funny how an animated movie that was pretty much universally hated can go to something that is eagerly anticipated for release now that Rise of Cobra has come and gone. Don’t know what ya got until it’s gone!
Too bad we don’t see this released in a DVD set with 25th anniversary figures. Phythona, Golobulus, Royal Guard, Jinx and a retooled Falcon.
Will this be out on regular DVD as well?
As someone who watched the movie religiously as a kid I’m definitely going to have to buy it on Blu Ray.
Well that’s great news !
I’m still fuming over the archaic DVD release only of Resolute. (I mean really, how many people went back to buying VHS after DVD came out…sheesh).
I will definately pick this up, because just like Alpine has pointed out, after RoC, everything else is golden now.
Awesome! I always wanted a DVD of this.
Cobra-La was a bad idea but I was just glad the story was so much more coherent than the Transformers movie. I didn’t know how to feel after I saw that completely random (but nicely animated) mess in the theater when I was seven. The Joe movie was a good time. I also loved the Joe movie because quite nearly every single Joe made an appearance except for a tiny handful. I’d hug whoever was in charge of continuity.
Also, the Blu Ray is worth getting for the intro alone. I still tear up when Duke picks up the flag and flies to the top of the statue as the song reaches its peak. Then I throw a baseball, bake an apple pie and eat a steak while riding a humvee through an explosion screaming YEE HAW! Okay maybe not all that but I do feel like saluting something.
“I also loved the Joe movie because quite nearly every single Joe made an appearance except for a tiny handful”
that’s one of teh reason I like GIJoe the Movie. I love Transformers the Movie but there are several characters who don’t appear. I can understand that certain characters weren’t shown due to being created while the movie was in production but a large chunk of the Autobots introduced in season 1 are nowhere to be found.
GIJoe the Movie however, has almost everyone from the begining of the series up to Season 2. Sure, most were reduced to “Where’s Waldo”-style appearances but they were there.
