How can it feel like an eternity when last year’s Convention was only a few months away? Well, it has seemed that way, but the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club is finally tossing some bones our way with a couple of hints regarding the upcoming Convention Exclusive sets (both 12″ and 3 3/4″). Interestingly, the clues for the 3 3/4″ set sound remarkably familiar.
The clues are as follows…
3 3/4″: This might be a history loop…but…something old, something new, something foreign and nothing blue.
12″: I keep returning to this vacation spot.
Well…no offense to the 12 inchers out there, but my attention is focused solely on the 3 3/4″ info…and it’s the same as last year? Well, last year, everyone (myself included) was convinced that it would be the Red Shadows and Action Force… and this certainly seems like the time to do it. So yeah…that’s my bet. For the second year in a row. :shifty: Now, the first thing I immediately notice is shenanegans! Last year, Lanny claimed there was “nothing blue” according to his clue… Starduster and Manleh sure looked pretty blue… hmmm. 🙂
Of course, the real question on many fans’ lips is… what format? Traditional or modern? Well, we may have gotten a clue from Brian Savage himself on the GIJCC forums not too long ago…when responding to an inquiry about o-ring tooling being destroyed, this was his response:
“We don’t have an exact count but it is running thin. One of the con figures changed about 3-4 times due to tool issues.”
Hmmm…that certainly seems to point to the fact that they’re currently working with vintage era tooling on this convention set. Of course, I may be reading way too much into it…and hoping a bit too much as well. A Red Shadows/Action Force set using the vintage tooling with updated looks? Yeah, that would be about tops on the list of things I’d like to see. Crossing my fingers.
yaaaayyy another year, and another round of $400 repaints. Rock on!
I prefer the new mold over the O-Ring mold myself. But there are ALOT of people who don’t. And ALOT of people who weren’t too happy about the exclusives not being O-Rings last year. After the big stink, I’m curious to see if the club has changed this year’s exlusives back to O-Ring. If not, and Pursuit of Cobra and Resolute product don’t see light of day this year, I don’t care what anyone says, Joe will be dead until years later when someone comes along to attempt to revive it.
And big thanks will go out to Paramount, Sommers, Rise of Cobra and Hasbro for killing it.
GI Joe is not Transformers or Star Wars. The only people who like it are collectors. Everytime Hasbro tries to aim it at kids since ARAH, it doesn’t do too well. Sigma 6, VvV, Spytroops and Rise of Cobra are all low spots and embarassments in the history of this line.
Now, cue all those who have stocks in Hasbro or loved Sigma 6 and Rise of Cobra and hates Mattel to come in with the usual retorts.
I will pass on this years set if they are o-ring style.
For my part, having never purchased a con-exclusive set, I would be VERY tempted to fork over cash for new-sculpt Red Shadows characters. I’ve been obsessing over the Red Shadows for a while now, thinking of ways to make some myself (big fan of Jin Saotome’s versions). If I could get an army of troops, a modern Baron and Muton, as well as all the rest of those freaky cats…well, lets just say saving up for that would be easy in my opinion.
We’ll see, though. 😉 Blood for the Baron!!!
hell ya bring on the RED SHADOWS !!!!
man I so want the club to do these !
If it is Red Shadows/AF o-ring or not I may be tempted to get them.
